Travelers have sought refuge within Boise's comforting arms since the beginning of Boise's history. Oregon Trail emigrants, looking forward to their stay at Fort Boise, remarked that the early Boiseans were "exceedingly polite, courteous and hospitable." Boise's charms attracted early 1900s dignitaries like Will Rogers, Teddy Roosevelt and Clarence Darrow to the chateau-styled Idanha Hotel.

Will Rogers also set up camp at the Owyhee Plaza Hotel, Boise's other landmark inn, named for the mountain range south of town. Today, travelers select from more than 58 lodging options, offering about 4,600 rooms. There are facilities to match every taste from pampered elegance to mountain inns.

Downtown

The range of downtown hotels has increased dramatically since the time of Will Rogers, but the Owyhee Plaza Hotel is still considered one of the top choices. The 90-year-old facility retains an old-fashioned charm while offering modern conveniences, like 11 meeting and banquet rooms.

Nearby, is the Grove Hotel and Bank of America Centre, the pulse of downtown Boise. Offering 250 rooms and 22 suites, the hotel is connected to the Bank of America Centre, host to professional sports, well-known entertainers and conventions. Convention-goers can also stay at the nearby Statehouse Inn, Best Western Safari Motor Inn or Boise Centre GuestLodge.

For a luxurious, pampered stay in Boise, visitors should check into one of the newer hotels, the Anniversary Inn. With 38 theme rooms, the inn spoils its guests with a Jacuzzi and big screen television in every room. Close to the Kathryn Albertson Park and Boise River, the inn offers delightful recreation nearby. Adjacent to the Boise River, the Shilo Inn Riverside is the perfect location for downtown convenience and Boise River recreation. Guests jog, bike or skate along the paved pathway, stopping at a riverside restaurant for a cool refreshment or snack.

Boise State University/ ParkCenter Boulevard

Boise River accommodations are popular for a reason. Guests can combine some of Boise's best features, superb recreation with friendly lodging. Sitting next to the Boise River Greenbelt, Cavanaughs ParkCenter Suites is an all-suites hotel so close to the river that fishermen might want to bring their gear. The equally comfortable, Doubletree Club ParkCenter, is located nearby, offering the same large hotel luxuries, as well as fresh-baked cookies, a tradition that many hotel chains now include. These two luxurious hotels are located in the ParkCenter Boulevard area, home to elegant houses lining the Boise River, business headquarters, and a variety of shops and restaurants.

Considered an entertainment hub, nearby Boise State University (BSU) attracts visitors for musical and theatrical entertainment at the Morrison Center for Performing Arts and BSU Pavilion, and sports events at the Bronco Stadium. The University Inn is a popular lodging option for Bronco fans with easy access to BSU and downtown attractions.

Boise Towne Square Mall

On the other side of town, west of downtown, Boise State University and ParkCenter Boulevard, lies Boise's shopping hub, the Boise Towne Square Mall. Flagship stores like Dillard's and the Bon Marche attract shoppers from around the state. Chain restaurants and other large stores dot the area.

The mall's popularity has also attracted comfortable lodging options. Two all-suite hotels, AmeriSuites Hotel and Plaza Suite Hotel, are close to the mall and only a few minutes by car to downtown Boise. Shopping junkies should check into the Ameritel Inn, located next to the mall, and indulge in their bargain-hunting impulses.

Airport

As the mall's growth has attracted hotel chains, so has Boise's airport area. Flights, bringing businesspeople to Boise for high-tech meetings, have increased. Located in Boise's barren southwestern district, these hotels offer modern comforts but do not have the ambiance of Boise's other locations. However, if convenience to the airport is your only criteria, you will be amazed at the number of hotels greeting you as you leave the airport.

The Shilo Inn Airport and Holiday Inn Boise are two of the more expensive airport hotels. The Holiday Inn offers an unique entertainment complex, the Holidome, with a video arcade, indoor pool, Jacuzzi and fitness center. The hotel is also home to one of the larger conference facilities in town.

Bed & Breakfast Inns

Where the airport area is devoid of ambiance, the bed-and-breakfast inns scattered throughout Boise brim with style. Historic downtown homes have been converted into bed and breakfasts, like the Idaho Heritage Inn, a restored governor's mansion. J. J. Shaw House Bed-and-Breakfast Inn and Robin's Nest Bed-and-Breakfast, surround visitors in Victorian charm and even offer meeting rooms.

Visitors looking for a country setting should settle in at Maples Bed-and-Breakfast, which offers a small meeting room and farmhouse charm. Horses are welcome at the Inn at Shadow Valley, with foothill views and a small meeting room. At the Hidden Valley Ranch Bed-and-Breakfast horses are also pampered, along with their people.

Rooms with a View

Located about 16 miles from downtown Boise, but feeling much farther away, the Pioneer Condominiums cozy up to Bogus Basin Ski Resort. Skiers schuss down snowy slopes in the winter, while hikers and mountain bikers explore the singletrack trails in the summer. Trail rides take place in the summer and sleigh rides are offered in the winter by guide services, like Bogus Creek Outfitters. The views of Boise's downtown area and surrounding high desert stretch to the south while rugged mountains continue north.

The Pioneer Condominiums are not the only rooms with views in the Boise area. Wherever visitors stay, they will be delighted with Boise's famous outdoors and colorful sights. Geese parade along the Boise River Greenbelt, mountain bikers pound up steep singletrack trails, and colorful dancers sway to music during Boise's many festivals.

Downtown

Boise
United States
Dubbed as Boise's cultural, governmental and economic hub, the downtown area is a vibrant display of sidestreet cafes, posh boutiques and renowned art galleries to give it a slight European feel. A new development along 8th Street Marketplace--known for its pleasantly large pedestrian walkways--lends to downtown a large array of business and housing opportunities, along with a high-end theatre and more common, recognizable restaurants. No day of the year is left untouched by entertainment events: the Alive after Five event has become a Wednesday summer ritual, while the Capital City Farmer's Market offers the freshest vegetables and fruits from April to October.
