This free event has been around since Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa. Well, the annual three-day festival may not be that antiquated, but it is one of the nation's best outdoor arts-and-crafts extravaganza. Held at the Julia Davis Park in early September, the festival hosts artists from around the West showing off and selling their works. From finger-snapping jazz melodies to mellow blues, this festival brings a wide variety of jazz performers to the Boise Valley. For five days every April, Boise audiences can enjoy jazz greats such as Chuck Mangione, Arturo Sandoval and Ernestine Anderson. Named for Boise jazz pianist Gene Harris, who died in January 1999, the festival also offers a variety of musical workshops for junior high and high school students. Discover Boise's trendiest neighborhood, Hyde Park, at this popular street fair. Live rock on two stages, a plethora of arts and crafts, and a beer garden and food court highlight the three-day fair on September's second weekend. A small-time event in past years, it has achieved recent popularity. If you don't like lots of people, don't go. Shakespeare under the stars |

Bringing Shakespeare to Idaho audiences since 1977, this thespian festival takes place every summer from June through September at an outdoor amphitheater. Located along the Boise River, the amphitheater allows the audience to enjoy spectacular Idaho scenery while appreciating the nuances of Shakespearean theater. This community theater is much more than a summer-only affair, offering educational programs and other performances throughout the year. Group prices and season subscriptions are available. Experience Basque culture |

With one of the largest Basque populations outside of Spain, Boise is the perfect place for a festival celebrating its culture. The San Inazio (St. Ignatius) Basque Festival is held on the weekend nearest July 31, which commemorates the saint's birthday. Downtown Grove Street is closed off while dances are held Saturday and Sunday nights. On Saturday afternoon, taste the Basque flavor with music, dance and sport exhibitions. World-famous rodeo |

No trip to Idaho is complete without taking in a rodeo. Luckily, one of the most famous rodeos in the world takes place every July in Nampa, about 16 miles from Boise. This more than 80-year-old tradition has been called "the wildest, fastest show on earth." Recently moving from its outdoor arena to the indoor Idaho Center, the rodeo also offers first-rate country-western performers, as well as world pro rodeo stars. Tickets run from USD4 to USD26. This nine-day affair offers a variety of events, games, rides, live entertainment, food courts, trade shows, a rodeo and much more. Usual annual attendance reaches 260,000. Past Grandstand shows have included entertainers such as the Statler Brothers, Dwight Yoakum, Neal McCoy and Creedence Clearwater Revival, just to name a few. Garden lit with holiday cheer |

Bright holiday lights decorate the Idaho Botanical Garden during this annual event. Gazebos are outlined in color, and the many trees and bushes in the gardens glow in the night. With more than 100,000 lights in use, this holiday event attracts about 15,000 visitors. Creative display organizers even wrap tumbleweeds in lights. Hot chocolate, cookies, hot spiced cider and wine add to the festivities. Local choirs and bands sing and play holiday music, while bonfires scattered throughout the grounds keep visitors warm.
