Aula Magna of the University of Bologna

Inaugurated by Pope John Paul II
Via Castiglione
Bologna 40124
Italy
+39 51 1209 9111
In what used to be the Church of Santa Lucia you can now find the Aula Magna of the Bolognese Alma Mater Studiorum. The church passed into the hands of the Jesuits in 1562 and was rebuilt following the design of the architect Girolamo Rainaldi. Enlargement work which was planned by Francesco Maria Angelini took place later but was interrupted in 1732, only to be partially finished in the 19th century. With the façade incomplete, it was fitted out as a gym and workshop for the Aldini Institute after its deconsacration. It was later transformed into the Aula Magna and was inaugurated by Pope John Paul II in 1988 on the occasion of the 9th centenary of the university. The interior is divided into three naves and now hosts concerts, conferences, and cultural shows. The ex-convent annex still has its portico dating back to 1676 which was built by Agostino Barelli, and the library which was constructed in 1742 by the architect, G. Ambrosi.

On the eastern side of Piazza Maggiore, the Palazzo dei Banchi architecturally speaking, fits in nicely with the other neighboring buildings. Characterized by a portico with a sequence of 15 arches, it was conceived of in 1565 by Vignola in response to a need to "obscure the view" of the artisans quarters to the rear and give the Piazza back its beauty. Two vaults give access to the old Mercato di Mezzo that still exists today. Admission: Guests may visit the exterior only.

This important museum institution is located inside the old Santa Maria della Morte Hospital, and was opened in 1881. The conspicuous repertory of materials on display has reached such enormous proportions thanks to the Palagi donations and the archaeological excavations carried out by Giovanni Gozzadini in 1853 and by Antonio Zannoni in 1869. By studying these precious artifacts with villanoviana and felisinea origins (both ancient civilizations from this area) it is possible to learn more about the phases of cultural evolution in Bologna from its origins right up to the Etruscan period, a period in which the city acquired the name of Felsina. The Museum contains a lot of lapidary monuments, grave goods, Greek and Roman amphorae, ceramics, and votive bronzes. The most important exhibits include an Etruscan bronze truncated cone shaped urn, and a unique example of an ivory stool dating back to the 5th century B.C. An important section of the Museum is dedicated to a precious Egyptian collection, the second biggest in Italy, which contains sarcophagi, mummies, bronzes, ushebti (small funerary statues), beautiful statues in black granite, and precious jewels. The architecture of the interior courtyard is very beautiful and worth taking a look at, the cloisters and the Santa Maria della Morte Church face onto this courtyard. Admission: Free.

Via Mazzini 103-105
Bologna 40138

The Crociferi brothers settled here in this area between Via Mazzini and Via Massarenti (now Via Azzura) in the 13th century. The Crociferi were a charitable and hospitable order and built a church, a hospital for pilgrims, and a convent here. During the 16th century this was all rebuilt in Via Mazzini. This area became known as the Crociali. Napoleon's soldiers stayed there after they entered Bologna on the 18th-19th June 1796. After Pope Alexander VII's suppression of the order in 1656, the complex passed to the Jesuits and then, in 1774, to the BarnabitiThe complex was then suppressed by Napoleon. The Barnabiti bought it back in 1880 and used it to house young guests of the Collegio di San Luigi. At the beginning of the 20th century it was sold to some private owners who transformed it into flats. The last pope to stay here was Pope Pius IX on the 9th June 1857. No traces remain of the Chiesa dei Crociferi, Santa Maria del Morello. A few remains of the old religious settlement can be seen in the 16th century courtyard with loggia.

The façade is decorated with beautiful mullioned windows and a balcony, which was added in 1620 and is dominated by a niche where there a statue of the Madonna stands, protecting the Corporation. Story has it that in Bologna, it was customary to have a light as a sign of devotion and as protection against adverse weather conditions; this light was close to the sacred images and statues of the virgin. Even today on the old streets you will find small altars dedicated to the Madonna decorated with fresh flowers and candles.

This example of 15th-century architecture was built between 1483-1491 by Edigio Montanari. In 1915 the original structure was brought to light by substantial restoration work. They also restored the Torre dei Conoscenti which dates back to the 13th Century. The entrance courtyard is really beautiful. It's surrounded by porticoes with a loggia. At present, the Palazzo Fava Ghisilardi belongs to the city council. It contains the city's Medieval museum. The rooms contain collections of musical instruments and western ceramics. The rooms are decorated with some fabulous frescoes by Carracci which show scenes from mythology. Admission: Free.

Palazzo Fava Ghisilieri is an old aristocratic home next to the city's Medieval museum. It was built at the end of the sixteenth century and was given a magificent aspect. Today, the Palazzo contains the Hotel Baglioni and its elegant restaurant. Some of the hotel's rooms have ceilings which were frescoed by Carracci in 1582-83. These frescoes contain scenes from the myths of Europa. The cellars of the Palazzo are connected to an old complex which dates back to when Bologna was a Roman city. There are also the remains of a "decumano"(one of the main roads in the Roman road system).

Former Baraccano Conservatory

Once used to house orphan girls
Via Santo stefano 119
Bologna, Emilia - Romagna 40125
Italy
The façade, portico and quadriportico were built for the Bentivoglio family at the end of the 15th century. The capitals are worth taking a look at. Today the building is the administrative base for the Santo Stefano district. It was used to house pilgrims during the 15th century, and was later turned into an orphanage for young girls - a sort of conservatory to keep them "honest". It could house up to 75 girls who were then expected to work up to 12 hours per day, sewing, embroidering, and making fabrics. The façade was redone in 1779. The interiors have recently been rennovated and display some frescoes by Bagnacavallo.

The lovely building in Piazza Verdi in front of the Teatro Comunale was constructed as the stables for the rich Bentivoglio family. In 1962 it became the home of the Monte della Canapa which was the first goods credit company in Italy. The lunette decorated with frescoes by Giovanni Francesco Spini in 1962 can be seen below the portico which depicts the deposition of St. Antony Abbot, the patron saint of hemp workers. Today the building is used by the university and several years of renovation have restored its ancient splendour.

From 1805 the Conservatory took place in the 14th century ex-Agostinian convent which faces onto Piazza Rossini. Inside, a magnificent stairway built by Alfonso Torreggiani in 1752 leads to the upper floors where around 300 portraits of famous musicians are exhibited. The paintings of the Quadreris were collected by G. B. Martini, who was enamored of music and had the portraits sent to him by the artists. Many of these works adorn the Sala Bossi, famous for its classical concerts and mangificent organ. Well known musicians such as Rossini, Donizzeti and Martucci used to teach in the Conservatory.

Galliera Castle

The symbol of Bologna's papal history.
Via Indipendenza
Bologna, Emilia - Romagna 40121
Italy
The remains of the Rocca di Porta di Galliera can be seen at the end of Via dell'Indipendenza at the foot of the Parco della Montagnola. This once magnificent castle was the symbol of the Pope's control of Bologna. It was built at the beginning of the 14th Century on the orders of Cardinal Bertrando del Proggetto. There was a particularly close relationship between Bologna and the church for about four centuries. The relationship varied between difficult and hostile periods to times of peaceful cooperation. The castle was always the first symbol of oppression to be attacked by the people and over the years it was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. The castle was eventually completely destroyed and the ruins were used by the architect, Martinetti, to build a city park (della Montagnola) in the 19th Century.

Garisenda Tower

The famous leaning tower of Bologna
Piazza di Porta Ravegnana
Bologna 40125
Italy
Built around the 12th Century, probably at the same time as the Asinelli tower was built, the leaning Garisenda tower is about 48m high. It is also called the Mozzata (Docked) tower, because it is said to have been hight than it now is. Dante Alighieri supports this hypothesis in the 31st canto of his 'Inferno' (v136-138) when he said: "...Qual pare a riguardar la Garisenda sotto 'l chinato, quando un nuvol vada sovr'essa sì, che ella incontro penda..." ("It seems that I am looking at the Garisenda tower under its incline, and when a cloud passes over, it leans a little..."). We can also deduce that the tower acquired its lean quite quickly, perhaps due to a subsidence in the ground. There is a plaque inscribed with Dante's verses on the leaning side of the tower.

The Palazzo Ghiselli-Vasselli is currently occupied by the Ancelle del Sacro Cuore (also known as the "Suore Spagnole" or "Spanish Sisters") who run a convent here. It is a 16th century building which was transformed in the 18th century. It houses paintings by Guercino, Basoli, Gandolfi, and others. The façade was restored by the Comitato per Bologna Storica Artistica in 1927. This was simply done in order to save the original pointed windows, as the round windows in the frieze, the cornice, and the portico were still in a good state of repair.

Giosuè Carducci´s residence dominates the square of the same name. It is slightly set back, assuming a stately air. The building was originally a religious sanctuary. It was closed down in 1798 and became a private residence in 1801. Carducci moved there in 1890 and lived there until the end of his days. The poet's apartment was on the first floor and still contains his personal effects including some antiques, portraits, furniture and his academic robes etc. It is exactly as he left it before his death. He had a remarkable private library containing some 40,000 books as well as thousands of letters written to him by noteworthy contemporaries. There are also many original manuscripts and a large section dedicated to Carducci's own work. On the ground floor there is the city's Unification of Italy museum.

"The dark, many-towered Bologna rises up through the clear Winter..." ...so felt Giosué Carducci as he wrote about the city in which he lived for over forty years. In 1860 the Ministry of Public Instruction offered him the post of Italian Literature in Europe's oldest university which he only left in 1867 when he was sent to Naples for having founded a Masonic lodge in Bologna. The "Aula del Poeta" remained as it always had been at the Palazzo Poggi, and it became a monument of scholar and of the reconsacrate literatire of the Bolognese Alma Mater Studiorem. The Aula is preceded by the "Sala d'Ercole" (Hercules' Room), which has this name because of the statue of Hercules which was sculpted in 1730 by Angelo Pió. A copy of this statue can be seen in the centure of Palazzo Poggi's magnificent courtyard.

Bolognese lawyers, to whom the foundation of the Alma Mater Studiorum is owed, were called Glossatori, because they used to add glosses, notes and postscripts to the legal texts and manuscripts from which they completed their studies. In their honour, while memory retains the vestiges of their actions as regards legal texts, the city keeps their remains inside an important funeral monument still visible today from the Piazza San Domenico, as well as in Piazza Malpighi, in the shadow of St. Francis' Basilica. These are monumental arches covered with shrines, supported by columns decorated with enamelled tiles, within which are the coffins of hundreds of famous scholars from the Studium.

The story goes that where this magnificent church stands today, sheltered by the ancient city walls, a small shrine had already been erected in 1400. This was to house an image of the Virgin Mary, attributed to Lippo di Dalmasio. The decision to build the church which stands today only came in the sixteenth century. The dome was added at the end of the seventeenth century by the architect A. Barelli. A beautiful five-arched portico adorns the façade, made of an attractive terracotta worked by Alfonso Lombardi. Inside, amidst the baroque decoration, there are two statues of questionable origin: they are perhaps the work of A. Lombardi, or even of Donatello. There are also frescoes by F. del Cossa, L. Metropolitana di San Pietro

Imposing cathedral built over the site of a Romanesque cathedral
Via Indipendenza 7
Bologna 40121
Italy
+39 51 22 2112
This was built over the site of a Romanesque cathedral, destroyed by fire in 1141. The architect Domenico Tibaldi designed the presbytery in 1575 and restored the Romanesque crypt, which can still be visited today. It was redesigned at the beginning of the 17th Century by Ambrosini and Donati, and the 60 m wide vault was also built during this period. This building's special features are contained in the two concentric belltowers - in the 13th Century the oldest Romanesque style belltower was enclosed by a taller belltower. The interior is extraordinarily large and is made up of a nave with adjoining side chapels. There are two red marble holy water containers, decorated with lions, which belonged to the original Romanesque-Gothic basilica. In the hall of the Palazzo d'Acursio, the Museo Morandi is the most important collection of works of the Bolognese maestro Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964). This came into being thanks to the donations that the famous painter's sister made to the council and was opened in 1993, putting over 200 works on show placed side by side with a rich collection of volumes and numerous works of art belonging to Morandi himself. Inside the museum there is even a reconstruction of the studio in which the artist worked.

Within the Accursio palace, the seat of the City's Administration, reached via the charming Piazza Maggiore, you can visit the twenty magnificent rooms which currently hold the city's prestigious art collection. These sumptuous rooms, adorned with decoration and frescoes painted between the sixteenth and the nineteenth centuries, constituted, until 1859, the main seat of pontifical justice in Bolgna. The collection of works exhibited, which has been on show since 1935, was built up through private purchases and conspicuous donations to the community of Bologna by several wealthy families: the Palagi, Baruzzi, Pepoli, Verzaglia and Pizzardi families. The collection are worth visiting since they include several master works by famous Bolognese artists, such as Simone dei Crocifissi, Jacopo di Paolo, Vitale da Bologna, Francesco Francia, Bartolomeo Passerotti, Jacopo Tintoretto, Ludovico Carracci, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Gaetano Gandolfi, Angelo Michele Colonna.

Municipal Palace

The magnificent municipal palace
Piazza Maggiore
Bologna, Emilia - Romagna 40121
Italy
Building work for this magnificent Municipal Palace began in 1287 on the Western side of Piazza Maggiore. It was originally called the "Palazzo delle Biade" and became the splendid residence of the papal legate. The only remaining architectural feature of the former Accursio houses is the tower and its clock which was designed by Tadolini in 1773. The beautiful sandstone portal was sculpted by Alessi in 1550. In the large sandstone window, also built by Alessi in 1553 there are two red marble eagles from Verona with the left hand one being attributed to Michelangelo. The bronze statue on the portal, dedicated to the Bolognese Pope Gregorio XIII Boncompagni, was modeled by Menganti in 1580. Inside the 22 sumptuous rooms, former appartments of the papal legate, we today find the Municipal Art Collection. In addition, the palace also holds the most important Moriandiano Museum in existence.

The museum offers tetralogical examples and anatomical-pathological models.

This Museum is also known as the waxwork museum. It contains lots of very real looking waxwork figures on which students based their studies of human anatomy in the 18th century. The Museum is due to the work of Pope Benedict XIV who founded the Science Institute's 'Anatomy Laboratory' in 1742, and entrusted the creation of the waxworks to the anatomist, Ercole Lelli. These waxworks were put on display in 1907. The waxworks possess great artistic value as well as educational worth. Some of the waxworks were made with the help of famous ceroplasticians such as O. Toselli and G. Manzolini. The eight statues of people with flayed skin by E Lelli and the Hands by G Manzolini are really impressive. This Museum also houses the Calori Collection which is made up of thousands of skulls which were analysed and catalogued by the anatomist, L. Calori.

Notary Palace

The Notary guild
Via de' Pignattari

This is the old site of the Notary guild. It was built at the end of the 13th century. It is no accident that it is alongside the Basilisa di San Petronio; indeed, the building´s position shows just how powerful the Bolognese lawyers' guild was at one time. The building was enlarged using plans based on designs by Antonio di Vincenzo and Bartolomeo Fioravanti. The top of the building has been given a battlement effect and there are six mullioned windows which break up the main facade. These were also probably designed by Antonio di Vincenzo who was the architect of the Basilica di San Petronio. Recent restoration work has brought to light some fabulous frescoes inside the building. The most substantial building alterations in recent years were made in 1908 by Alfonso Rubbiani.

Pavaian Portico

Place popular with Bolognese society
Via dell'Archiginnasio
Bologna 40124
Italy
This long portico (139 metres) has taken its name from a word in Bolognese dialect "pavaian". This means a silk scarf market. This important market used to take place in the square opposite the portico. It attracted people (and their money) from everywhere. Pope Pius IV had the portico built in 1562 by Antonio Morandi. Ever since it has been one of the main places for Bolognese society to go out walking. Often there are strains of beautiful melodies resonating along the porticoes since it has become popular with romantic musicians. The entrances to the city's archeology museum and the Archiginnasio building are both under these porticoes.

Rossini House

The house of the famous composer
Strada Maggiore 26
Bologna 40125
Italy
The famous composer Gioacchino Rossini studied literature and music in Bologna and was trained by his father in singing, solfeggio and the harpsichord. Rossini soon showed his musical talent and, once he had found success and fame, left Bologna to travel in Italy and Europe. He returned to Bologna where he had a house built (1824-27) at number 26, Strada Maggiore where he lived for about 20 years, this time was fulfilling for Rossini artistically speaking and was also a very difficult period of his life. This being a private property it can be viewed from outside only.

Church containing Guercino´s tomb
Via Volto Santo 1
Bologna 40123
Italy
+39 51 22 2852
The church was built at the beginning of the 17th century, replacing a small church, which belonged to the Canonici Regolari of S.Maria di Reno. The plans were designed by the architect, Ambrogio Mazenta. The Romanesque bell tower is all that remains of the previous building. The new building was built along classical lines. The façade is decorated with statues, which were sculpted by Giovanni Tedeschi, in 1615. The church has a single nave and contains a memorial to Guercino. This can be found on a tablet in the centre of the church floor. The most interesting paintings in the church are Alessandro Tiarini´s 'Coronation of Madonna di Vitale of Bologna' and 'The Holy family'. There is also the 'Madonna with child', by Simone dei Crocifissi. The church is currently undergoing restoration work.

Home of the Knights Templar
Strada Maggiore 80
Bologna 40125
Italy
The Palazzo Salaroli-Modigliani's 15th century courtyard is a real marvel. It once stood next to a Templar temple. The palazzo was rebuilt at the end of the last century and contains significant remains of the first residence which belonged to the Knights Templar (12th century), and then to the Knights of Malta from 1390 onwards. The Torre della Magione used to stand on the corner with Vicolo Malgrado. It was placed there by Aristotele Fioravanti, who moved it thirteen metres along Via Malgrado as described in the plaque which commemorates the event. The tower was demolished 1825.

The holy relics of St. Anna were given to Cardinal Albergati by the English King in return for the Cardinal´s help in resolving the Hundred years war. The Cardinal founded this church in 1435 and dedicated it to the Saint. Restoration works were begun in 1736 under the supervision of an architect named Pizzoli and the building was given a new Baroque appearance. During the Napoleonic period, the church was deconsecrated and the relics of St.Anna were moved to the Basilica of St.Peter. In 1973, the city council allowed the Orthodox church to take over the church. It has since been suitably adapted for worship and iconastasis. The Orthodox church of San Basilio is run by the Archimandrite Marco Davitti. There are church services held in Greek, Italian, Romanian, Slav and English.

San Francesco Basilica

The Franciscans in Bologna
Piazza Malpighi 9
Bologna 40122
Italy
In 1236, the Franciscans began building this beautiful Basilica. The façade overlooking Piazza San Francesco has retained its Romanesque-Gothic features with a single spire. The portal is adorned with 18th century features. Inside, the visitor will find the best of Italian-Gothic albeit with a modicum of French influence - it was the first to be built with three naves jutting out from six sections at the top of high octagonal pillars. Among the works of art kept in this holy building, there is an extraordinary altar piece from the late 14th Century by Jacobello and Pier Paolo delle Masegne.

This church was built by the Augustine Fathers in 1267. In the 15th century the Bentivoglio chapel was added, and was probably designed by Pago di Lapo Portigiani. The church's façade is monocuspidate, and has a Romanesque portal decorated with carved lions which is crowned by a niche containing a statue of Saint Giacomo. To the sides of the entrance you can see four mortuary niches. There is a beautiful renaissance style portico which runs along the lefthand side of the church. The portico was built in 1477 on the request of Giovanni Bentivoglio. Even Goethe became speechless when he saw this magnificent place of worship .

San Giovanni Battista dei Celestini Church

Church filled with lots of valuable works of art
Piazza Celestini 2/a
Bologna 40123
Italy
San Giovanni Battista dei Celestini was built for the Celestine monks following the wish of Sir Antonio Galluzzi. Once the monks had settled in, they repeatedly had the building rearranged. They first assigned the building work to the 'Triachino' and then to Tommaso Marelli. In 1770, the task of designing the prospect of the church and monastery was given to Tadolini. The interior is in the shape of a cross with a nave and vaults, and was greatly enhanced during the 17th and 18th centuries with some works of art by important artists of the period. One of the most important paintings is Noli Me Tangere by Lucio Massari (on the first altar on the right). The sculptures around the altar are by Mazza, and the frescoes on the vault are by Burrini.

San Giovanni in Monte Church

Holy building founded by the Laterans
Piazza San Giovanni in Monte 3
Bologna 40124
Italy
San Giovanni in Monte was rebuilt by the Lateran Canons, around 1286. Legend attributes the buildings origins to Saint Petronio (5th century A.D.), the patron saint of Bologna. However, studies have revealed that it was first built in 1045. The façade has a trefoil pediment and was designed in 1474 by D. Bernardi following Venetian Renaissance models. The interior is in a Gothic style and is divided into three naves, which are supported by octagonal pillars. The windows, which were constructed at the end of the 15th century, following Francesco del Cossa's design, are very beautiful. At the centre of the middle nave, there is a marble column which stands on an upturned Corinthian capital, dating back to the 2nd to 1st century B.C. An engraved Christ figure was added to this and has been attributed to Alfonso Lombardi.

If you want to get to know something of the area outside the city center then we recommend that you visit this magnificent church out in the countryside. It was built at the same time as the monastery to accommodate the Certosini monks who came to Bologna in around 1333. The building is based on a upside down T-shape with a single extended nave. The whole ecclesiastical complex is actually quite big, consisting of number of rooms, cells and cloisters. The Chapel cloister dates back to the seventeenth century. It has a portico supported by small columns and was called the Chapel cloister because it used to be surrounded by the monks cloister cells. There is another beautiful cloister which can be found along the right hand side of the church. It is called the Chapel of the Madonna.

There are references to this magnificent church on the Belvedere, which date back to 1114. It is certain, however, that the church was entrusted to the Benedettini Olivetani order in 1364. Although the building underwent some substantial alterations, it was not until 1517 that it was radially reconstructed by Biagio Rossetti. The Church has a striking red facade, which is built with terracotta. The church´s design has all the linearity of classical styles. The doors were completed by Andrea Formigine, in around 1525. The bell tower was also completed in around 1500 and has been restored on various occasions in the time since. There are various wonderful works of art by famous artists inside the church as well as the tomb of Francesoco Rizzoli from 1880. He was the founder of the famous Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute (also on the Belvedere).

San Petronio Basilica

The magnificent Basilica of Bologna's patron saint
Piazza Maggiore
Bologna 40124
Italy
+39 51 22 5442
In Bologna's very famous medieval Piazza Maggiore, we find the majestic Basilica di San Petronio, which is unique in the world, because its façade has been left unfinished. It was designed by the architect Antonio di Vincenzo. It was unanimously decided by all parties involved that construction work would begin, with the first stone being laid, in 1390. The holy building was entrusted with Bologna's religious and civil powers, and was dedicated to Saint Petronio, the city's patron. The building works were finished in 1659, but the front of the church remained incomplete, as it still does today. On the marble base of the facade, the beautiful main portal, or Porta Magna, sculptured by Jacopo della Quercia was interrupted by the artist's death whilst the smaller doors were sculptured by other sculptors including Alfonso Lombardi, Amico Aspertini, Givanni di da Modena, and il Parmigianino. Inside the Basilica, with its Italian Gothic influences, are large and surprisingly well-lit, with red hues and tall, rarefied pillars. A number of important historical events have taken place in the Basilica: Pope Clement VII crowned the emperor Carlo V here in 1530 and several sessions of the Council of Trent were held here. In the 22 side chapels, closed off by some beautiful wrought iron, brass and marble barriers, a huge artistic heritage consisting of paintings and sculptures, has been conserved. Also of great importance is the Meridian line that has been traced on the ground by the astronomer Gian Domenico Cassini in 1655. At the end of the left hand nave is the small but delightful San Petronio museum.

Small but beautiful Museo di San Petronio
Piazza Maggiore
Bologna 40124

+39 51 22 5442
In the Magnificent S.Petronio Basilica, at the back of the left hand nave, there is a small but delightful museum. This museum still holds the plans for the completion of the church's monumental façade. This project, carried out by great experts Francesco Terribilia and Baldassarre Peruzzi, is testimony to just how important the completion of this church was. The church was built to highlight the local council's religious and civil authority, despite the fact that this pre-renaissance masterpiece was never completed, leaving the marble base unfinished. For a clear idea of how exactly the plans progressed, there is a model by Arduino on display, of how the church looked in 1515. The collection also contains the instruments used by GD Cassini, in the tracing of the Meridian line, inside the Basilica. You can also check out the vestments and religious clothing, from the period of 1500 to 1700, jewelry from the 1300's, statues and bas-reliefs.

San Procolo dates back to the 11th century and was one of the first seats of the Benedictines. It was built over the tomb of San Procolo and became a meeting place for student associations. The façade is Gothic, and is enhanced by a beautiful portal which used to contain a fresco by Lippo Dalmasio in the lunette above it. This fresco is now inside the church, in the fourth chapel on the left. There are two memorial stones on the left hand side of the façade. The epigraph on the smaller of the stones cites a Latin tongue-twister which describes a curious little anecdote, while the other is dedicated to two Doctors.

The beautiful portico of San Giacomo Maggiore can be found on a stretch of Via Zamboni between Piazza Rossini and Piazza Verdi. You can enter the magnificent Santa Cecilia oratory which has been dubbed the "Sistine Chapel" of Bologna. The small Santa Cecilia church dates back to the thirteenth century and it was taken over by the Agostinian Order in 1323. In 1505, Giovanni II Bentivoglio, a wealthy man from Bologna, instructed all the major producers of renaissance art to help with the decoration of this small sanctuary. After some lengthy restoration, this historical treasure trove has finally been opened to the public, giving you the chance to see this valuable dedication to Santa Cecilia. The ten frescoes were painted by the Bolognese Art school between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries with work by artists like Lorenzo Costa, Francesco Francia, Amico Aspertini and Cesare Tamaroccio.

This Church and Monastery complex dates back to 1488 and was built by the Franciscans. The beautiful portico is what makes the building really unique. The portico has nineteen arches which were decorated with frescoes in 1619. The interior is in a late Gothic style and has three naves. The belltower, which rises well above the building, was built by Battista della Casa in 1687. The building was completely violated when it became a barracks in 1879. It only regained its 15th century splendour after 1945. The adjacent monastery is still in military hands. On the wall of the lefthand nave there is a magnificent fresco by Biagio Pupini dating back to 1523.

Santo Stefano Palace

Surrounded by beautiful residences
Piazza Santo Stefano
Bologna 40125
Italy
Piazza Santo Stefano is a charming cobbled piazza, one of the most magical historical places in the city. It is surrounded by beautiful old noble family palazzos and seems to be an entity in itself. Stories abound about the origins of the Santo Stefano complex but it seems probable that it was first a Roman temple which was dedicated to the worship of Isis. It is also said that St.Ambrose buried here the remains of the protomartyrs, Vitale and Agricola. It was conquered by the Lombards and visited by Charlemagne. Leopardi and Giorgio Morandi used to love coming here as part of their afternoon walks.

This very important museum offers didactic introductory tours, specially designed to facilitate a gradual acquisition of tactile perceptions of works of art through educational sculptural instruments such as bas-reliefs and full-relief sculpture. Through the reliefs the visually handicapped and poor-sighted can start to mentally imagine the visual images whilst the sighted can develop their tactile perceptions. This method of education via the imagination was conceived of in collaboration with the school's association of applied sculpture in Bologna.

The "Two Towers"

Asinelli and Garisneda, the familiar Bolognese towers
Piazza di Porta Ravegnana
Bologna, Emilia - Romagna 40125
Italy
A symbol of the Emilian county town, the two towers dominate the Bolognese skyline unchallenged. They date from the twelfth century and were almost certainly built as much to symbolize the power of the the noble families as to act as a military defense. This was a period of great wealth for Bologna, and there was hardly a noble household which did not build its own family tower. The Torre degli Asinelli, which has remained untouched by the centuries, was the highest of all and is distinguishable by its slight incline, while the Torre della Garisenda is about half the height of the Asinelli, with a very distinct lean and is not open to the public. Admission to the Torre degli Asinelli: EUR 3.

The Palatium Vetus

The Palatium Vetus opposite San Petronio.

This impressive building is directly opposite the Basilica di San Petroni. It was built from 1485 using the designs of Aristotele Fioravanti. It's on the site of what was previously the 'palatium vetus', the old city government from the thirteenth century. The facade is made up of a series of nine windows and an arcade with nine porticoes. Fioravanti kept the old Tower dell'Arengo from the previous structure as well as the foundations. In 1525, Alfonso Lombardi sculpted statues of the four Saints who are known as protective forces over the city. These were placed at the four corners of the crossroads over the foundations.

It was badly damaged by bombing during the war, and in the 60's it passed into the hands of the local council.
