Inaugurated by Pope John Paul II |
Via Castiglione Bologna 40124 Italy +39 51 1209 9111 |
In what used to be the Church of Santa Lucia you can now find the Aula Magna of the Bolognese Alma Mater Studiorum. The church passed into the hands of the Jesuits in 1562 and was rebuilt following the design of the architect Girolamo Rainaldi. Enlargement work which was planned by Francesco Maria Angelini took place later but was interrupted in 1732, only to be partially finished in the 19th century. With the façade incomplete, it was fitted out as a gym and workshop for the Aldini Institute after its deconsacration. It was later transformed into the Aula Magna and was inaugurated by Pope John Paul II in 1988 on the occasion of the 9th centenary of the university. The interior is divided into three naves and now hosts concerts, conferences, and cultural shows. The ex-convent annex still has its portico dating back to 1676 which was built by Agostino Barelli, and the library which was constructed in 1742 by the architect, G. Ambrosi. A church with a beautiful portico |
Piazza del Baraccano 2 Bologna, Bologna 40124 Italy +39 (0)51 39 2680 |
The story goes that where this magnificent church stands today, sheltered by the ancient city walls, a small shrine had already been erected in 1400. This was to house an image of the Virgin Mary, attributed to Lippo di Dalmasio. The decision to build the church which stands today only came in the sixteenth century. The dome was added at the end of the seventeenth century by the architect A. Barelli. A beautiful five-arched portico adorns the façade, made of an attractive terracotta worked by Alfonso Lombardi. Inside, amidst the baroque decoration, there are two statues of questionable origin: they are perhaps the work of A. Lombardi, or even of Donatello. There are also frescoes by F. del Cossa, L. Massari, P. Fontana and Lippo di Dalmasio. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Historic round church |
via dell'Osservanza 35/2 Bologna 40136 Italy +39 51 58 1444 |
It really is true what they say: that the most precious things are often hidden. The historic Madonna della Monte church dating from the 12th century stands in the grounds of the Villa Aldini. It is an extraordinary nineteenth century neo-classical villa built for Napoleon. The church is round and was used either as a dining room or a music hall. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Attractive gardens with small lake |
Viale Gozzadini Bologna, Emilia - Romagna 40017 Italy |
These beautiful gardens were created in 1875 by Emanuele di Sambuy. It was designed to give the Bolognese a place to relax away from all the noise of the city. Whole families still come here every Sunday for an afternoon stroll. The gardens have a small lake which reflects a chalet were you can eat during the Summer. In the evening the chalet becomes a nightclub and is packed with young people. The garden also covers an important archeological area where lots of ancient tombs have been unearthed. Beautiful church on the Belvedere hill |
Piazzale San Michele in Bosco 3 Bologna 40136 Italy +39 51 636 6328 |
There are references to this magnificent church on the Belvedere, which date back to 1114. It is certain, however, that the church was entrusted to the Benedettini Olivetani order in 1364. Although the building underwent some substantial alterations, it was not until 1517 that it was radially reconstructed by Biagio Rossetti. The Church has a striking red facade, which is built with terracotta. The church´s design has all the linearity of classical styles. The doors were completed by Andrea Formigine, in around 1525. The bell tower was also completed in around 1500 and has been restored on various occasions in the time since. There are various wonderful works of art by famous artists inside the church as well as the tomb of Francesoco Rizzoli from 1880. He was the founder of the famous Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute (also on the Belvedere). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Amongst the many hill walks which lead off Via San Mammolo across Via dell'Osservanza you can reach the beautiful Villa Aldini behind which is located the convent and Church of San Paolo in Monte. The Church was founded by the Frati Minori Osservanti at the beginning of 1400 and was rebuilt in a neoclassical style in 1828 by Vincenzo Vannini. Many valuable works of art adorn the Church's interior, and it also contains a very interesting museum, the Missionaries' Museum of Chinese art which can be visited by appointment only. A synthesis of medieval Bolognese painting |
Via dell'Osservanza Bologna 40136 Italy |
The church della Mezzaratta stands halfway up the road that leads to the Colle dell'Osservanza. It was built and dedicated to Sant'Apollonia in the 12th century. The cycles of frescoes originally painted in the church by Vitale da Bologna, Jacopo di Paolo, Simone de' Crocifissi, Jacopo Avanzi and Jacopo da Bologna form a superb synthesis of medieval Bolognese painting. They are now kept in a single room in the National Art Gallery that was built to reproduce the architecture of the church. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Church with attractive portico |
Via San Mammolo 31/2 Bologna 40136 Italy +39 51 49 2202 |
This Church and Monastery complex dates back to 1488 and was built by the Franciscans. The beautiful portico is what makes the building really unique. The portico has nineteen arches which were decorated with frescoes in 1619. The interior is in a late Gothic style and has three naves. The belltower, which rises well above the building, was built by Battista della Casa in 1687. The building was completely violated when it became a barracks in 1879. It only regained its 15th century splendour after 1945. The adjacent monastery is still in military hands. On the wall of the lefthand nave there is a magnificent fresco by Biagio Pupini dating back to 1523. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Surrounded by beautiful residences |
Piazza Santo Stefano Bologna 40125 Italy |
Piazza Santo Stefano is a charming cobbled piazza, one of the most magical historical places in the city. It is surrounded by beautiful old noble family palazzos and seems to be an entity in itself. Stories abound about the origins of the Santo Stefano complex but it seems probable that it was first a Roman temple which was dedicated to the worship of Isis. It is also said that St.Ambrose buried here the remains of the protomartyrs, Vitale and Agricola. It was conquered by the Lombards and visited by Charlemagne. Leopardi and Giorgio Morandi used to love coming here as part of their afternoon walks. Review © 2007, Wcities |
