Orthodox Church |
Via Sant'Isaia 35 Bologna 40123 Italy |
The holy relics of St. Anna were given to Cardinal Albergati by the English King in return for the Cardinal´s help in resolving the Hundred years war. The Cardinal founded this church in 1435 and dedicated it to the Saint. Restoration works were begun in 1736 under the supervision of an architect named Pizzoli and the building was given a new Baroque appearance. During the Napoleonic period, the church was deconsecrated and the relics of St.Anna were moved to the Basilica of St.Peter. In 1973, the city council allowed the Orthodox church to take over the church. It has since been suitably adapted for worship and iconastasis. The Franciscans in Bologna |
Piazza Malpighi 9 Bologna 40122 Italy |
In 1236, the Franciscans began building this beautiful Basilica. The façade overlooking Piazza San Francesco has retained its Romanesque-Gothic features with a single spire. The portal is adorned with 18th century features. Inside, the visitor will find the best of Italian-Gothic albeit with a modicum of French influence - it was the first to be built with three naves jutting out from six sections at the top of high octagonal pillars. Among the works of art kept in this holy building, there is an extraordinary altar piece from the late 14th Century by Jacobello and Pier Paolo delle Masegne. Review © 2007, Wcities |
