A rich collection of documents on the history of the city |
Via Nazario Sauro 20 Bologna 40121 Italy |
A sacred building probably dating from the thirteenth century, it was deconsecrated and rebuilt at the end of the seventeenth century by Tommaso Martelli, who imposed late-renaissance architectural tropes on the existing structure. After the damamge it suffered from bombings in the wars, it was acquired by the Fondazione della Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna which transformed it into a place of great artistic importance. It now hosts conferences, concerts, meetings and prestigious art exhibitions. A very important exhibition of urban architecture which takes place very three years, called "The Other Modernity" is currently in progress. There is also a very interesting archive which can be consulted, featuring details of works of art by Francesco Francia, Bartolomeo Cesi, Donato Creti, Crespi, Carracci, Gandolfi, Bigari, Fantuzzi, and Morandi, as well as on ceramics, manuscripts, a numismatic section containing thousands of coins from the Bolgnese mint. Archeological museum |
Via dell'Archiginnasio 2 Bologna, Emilia - Romagna 40124 Italy +39 51 23 3849 http://www.comune.bologna.it/m... |
This important museum institution is located inside the old Santa Maria della Morte Hospital, and was opened in 1881. The conspicuous repertory of materials on display has reached such enormous proportions thanks to the Palagi donations and the archaeological excavations carried out by Giovanni Gozzadini in 1853 and by Antonio Zannoni in 1869. By studying these precious artifacts with villanoviana and felisinea origins (both ancient civilizations from this area) it is possible to learn more about the phases of cultural evolution in Bologna from its origins right up to the Etruscan period, a period in which the city acquired the name of Felsina. The Museum contains a lot of lapidary monuments, grave goods, Greek and Roman amphorae, ceramics, and votive bronzes. The most important exhibits include an Etruscan bronze truncated cone shaped urn, and a unique example of an ivory stool dating back to the 5th century B.C. An important section of the Museum is dedicated to a precious Egyptian collection, the second biggest in Italy, which contains sarcophagi, mummies, bronzes, ushebti (small funerary statues), beautiful statues in black granite, and precious jewels. The architecture of the interior courtyard is very beautiful and worth taking a look at, the cloisters and the Santa Maria della Morte Church face onto this courtyard. Admission: Free. Ferdinando Marsili (Bologna 1658-1730) was a scientist, traveler and a mercenary. He fought against the Turks in the army of Emperor Leopold I contributing to victory not just as a soldier but with engineering works. Although he traveled selling his fighting services, he did not neglect his scientific studies, especially of waters and seas: these, for example, are some of his treatises: "Observations around the Thracian Bosphorus or the true canal of Constantinople", "Physical histories of the sea", and "Physical observations around Lake Garda, known in ancient times as Lake Benacus". The city, in return, has dedicated this museum to the man which contains documents, writings and relics of the founder of oceanography. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This Museum is also known as the waxwork museum. It contains lots of very real looking waxwork figures on which students based their studies of human anatomy in the 18th century. The Museum is due to the work of Pope Benedict XIV who founded the Science Institute's 'Anatomy Laboratory' in 1742, and entrusted the creation of the waxworks to the anatomist, Ercole Lelli. These waxworks were put on display in 1907. The waxworks possess great artistic value as well as educational worth. Some of the waxworks were made with the help of famous ceroplasticians such as O. Toselli and G. Manzolini. The eight statues of people with flayed skin by E Lelli and the Hands by G Manzolini are really impressive. Small but beautiful Museo di San Petronio |
Piazza Maggiore Bologna 40124 Italy +39 51 22 5442 |
In the Magnificent S.Petronio Basilica, at the back of the left hand nave, there is a small but delightful museum. This museum still holds the plans for the completion of the church's monumental façade. This project, carried out by great experts Francesco Terribilia and Baldassarre Peruzzi, is testimony to just how important the completion of this church was. The church was built to highlight the local council's religious and civil authority, despite the fact that this pre-renaissance masterpiece was never completed, leaving the marble base unfinished. For a clear idea of how exactly the plans progressed, there is a model by Arduino on display, of how the church looked in 1515. The collection also contains the instruments used by GD Cassini, in the tracing of the Meridian line, inside the Basilica. You can also check out the vestments and religious clothing, from the period of 1500 to 1700, jewelry from the 1300's, statues and bas-reliefs. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Complesso Basilicale Stefaniano, the oldest and most attractive of the city's religious sites, also houses a museum containing artefacts from the period 1300-1800, which were obtained from restoration works carried out in the chapel on the same complex. The lovely works include polyptychs, tryptychs and canvasses by Jacopo di Paolo, Lippo di Dalmasio, Simone dei Crocifissi, Alessandro Tiarini etc. The small museum, divided into two rooms, Cappella della Benda and the old Sala Capitolare has also put on display the beautiful reliquaries of S.Floriano from the 1300s and S.Petronio built by Jacop Rosetto in 1380. The Specola Tower at the Poggi Palace |
Via Zamboni 33 Bologna 40126 Italy +39 51 209 9360 |
Above the eighteenth century Poggi Palace, the seat of the rectory of the Alma Mater Bolognese Studiorum, this tower was built by C. F. Dotti between 1712 and 1725. The Specola Tower, from which you can observe the blue sky, was built because, at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the Poggi Palace was transformed into the Science Institute, on the initiative of Count L.F. Marsigli. To reach the specola tower, you go to N°33 via Zamboni, from where you can reach the tower, in which a real Astronomical Museum has been established. Here you can see instruments from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, used by Marsigli himself for astronomical observations: astrolobes, telescopes, sun dials etc. Nest door is the Meridian Room, with a marble and brass meridian, built by E. Lelli in 1741. Admission is free Review © 2007, Wcities |

How to appreciate art through touch |
Via Castiglione 71 Bologna 40124 Italy +39 51 33 2090 http://www.cavazza.it/arte/ind... |
This very important museum offers didactic introductory tours, specially designed to facilitate a gradual acquisition of tactile perceptions of works of art through educational sculptural instruments such as bas-reliefs and full-relief sculpture. Through the reliefs the visually handicapped and poor-sighted can start to mentally imagine the visual images whilst the sighted can develop their tactile perceptions. This method of education via the imagination was conceived of in collaboration with the school's association of applied sculpture in Bologna. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Museum of old materials |
Via Casaglia 3 Bologna, Emilia - Romagna 40043 Italy +39 51 614 5512 |
In 1990, the historic museum of tapestry was housed inside the 16th century Villa Spada. The idea for the museum was conceived in 1966 by the upholsterer Vittorio Zironi and was originally located in Via Barberia. The exhibition contains a collection of 6000 pieces. Among the exhibits are silks, brocades, damasks, as well as oriental, Persian, Indian and Chinese fabrics. There are also precious materials from the 1600s and 1700s adorned with delightful prints. There are red Bolognese Damasks, 50 cloths from the old Arts corporations, a moire canopy from 1870 for the Blessed Virgin of San Luca. There are also ancient hand looms: one for trimmings from 1380 and one for damasks from the 1700s. Review © 2007, Wcities |
