First run in 1897, the Boston Marathon is America's oldest and perhaps most famous annual marathon. It is held the third Monday in April on Patriots Day, a state holiday. The 1996 race set a world's record for 38,708 participants; typically, the field is limited to 15,000 runners. The course begins in the suburb of Hopkinton and traverses 26.2 miles through Wellesley, Newton, Brookline and Boston to the finish line in Copley Square. Spectators line the entire route, cheering the runners during this surprisingly fun spectator sport. Review © 2009, Wcities |
