Thousands of visitors visit Boston and the surrounding areas each year, especially in the spring and summer. Accommodations range from resort-like establishments to inexpensive hostels and motels. Business travelers can choose from locations near the heart of the Financial District or hotels in the high tech neighborhoods of Waltham and Lexington. An excellent public transportation system vastly increases your lodging options. Keep in mind that with many colleges and universities in the greater Boston area, room availability is tied to the academic calendar. If your travel plans require that you stay in Boston during September or the May commencement season, book your room as early as possible.

Downtown

You can reach downtown hotels by taking the water shuttle directly from the Logan Airport, an excellent alternative to sitting in traffic in the Sumner Tunnel. In addition to a great location, many downtown hotels offer fabulous views and beautiful rooms. Business travelers will be close to the financial district, and tourists are within walking distance of Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the New England Aquarium, the quaint North End and the Fleet Center. However, the Big Dig construction project is in this area as well, creating traffic jams, primitive road conditions and almost 24-hour noise, so be sure to ask about the effect of the project when booking your room.

The Boston Harbor Hotel on Rowes Wharf is a beautiful and modern hotel with balconies and a rotunda overlooking the harbor. The Boston Marriott Hotel on Long Wharf is another splendid choice for both business and leisure travelers seeking modern accommodations and a great view. A little further inland is the Regal Bostonian and Le Meridien, both of which offer distinctive lodgings and impeccable service.

Back Bay

Back Bay lodgings tend to be pricey, but offer a location near to downtown, Cambridge, the Theater District and exclusive Newbury Street. The deluxe Sheraton Boston Hotel on Dalton Street has just undergone a massive renovation. Across the street is another newly renovated hotel, the Back Bay Hilton. For all-suite elegance, try The Eliot Hotel on the corner of Commonwealth and Massachusetts Avenues, with its marble bathrooms, polite doormen and award-winning restaurant. The Back Bay is also home to such famous hotels as the Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons and Fairmont Copley Plaza.

The newly-renovated Lenox Hotel is on Boylston Street, parallel to Newbury Street and close to the shops at Prudential Center. Also nearby is the more modern Colonnade Hotel.

Two mammoth hotel chains with slightly lower rates are the Westin Copley Place and the Boston Marriot Copley Place. They have fine dining on the premises, are adjacent to large shopping areas, and have comfortable rooms. There are also several brownstones in the Back Bay area that have been converted into modest bed & breakfast lodgings, which are available for long-term stays by both business persons and those on extended visits. One such place to try is 463 Beacon Street Guest House.

Theater District

This area also has some good hotels that are typically lower in price than the Back Bay and downtown neighbors. However, this area is a little rougher around the edges as well, particularly in the wee hours of the morning. Bordering Chinatown, the Public Garden and the South End, you will find many good nightclubs, lounges and restaurants within easy walking distance. The Tremont House is a classy hotel located next to the Wang Center for the Performing Arts. Around the corner is The Radisson, which offers good rates, even during peak tourist season in summer.

Cambridge

Cambridge is an excellent alternative to high-priced downtown. Many hotels cater to families visiting students at nearby Harvard University and MIT. The Inn at Harvard, the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square and the Harvard Square Hotel all put you close to the prestigious campus. Harvard Yard is a stone's throw away from any of these lodging, and the MBTA Red Line will take you to downtown destinations.

Featuring personal attention and an intimate setting, A Cambridge House is a beautifully restored mansion on a quiet, tree-lined street. The Hyatt Regency Cambridge is on the banks of the Charles River and has breathtaking views of the Boston skyline. Close to the Museum of Science is the high tech-oriented Royal Sonesta Hotel, with modern amenities such as T1 and ISDN lines in every room.

Alternatives

Charming bed & breakfasts can be found in the South End, Cambridge and Brookline, and on Newbury Street and Beacon Hill. Most of these establishments are completely non-smoking. National chains with affordable prices such as Howard Johnson and Holiday Inn are located in Boston and the surrounding areas. If you really do not need any frills, the Hostelling International-Boston hostel is a nice building in a great location near the Back Bay Fens.

Despite the seeming wealth of options, Boston does have an extremely low hotel room vacancy rate, especially between the months of April and November. Be sure to book your room early and check your reservation often. The good news is that despite the lack of competition for guests, the lodging establishments here have sterling reputations, and you are almost guaranteed a good night's sleep, wherever you choose to stay.

Be prepared to relax at this Victorian inn, which was built in 1892. The bright yellow exterior draws you into a renovated mansion consisting of 15 bedrooms. Located in a quiet neighborhood outside Harvard Square, the inn is close to historic areas, shopping and fine dining. A parlor and library are great places to curl up with a book, grab some hors d'oeuvres in the evening or cookies late at night. Four-poster beds, fresh flowers and fireplaces can be found in many of the rooms. A dining room serves breakfast with omelettes made to order.

Tucked away on winding roads behind the Museum of Fine Arts is a beautiful park of manicured lawns, bridges, ponds and flower beds. In the summer, the gated Rose Garden explodes into aromatic pink, white, yellow and red. More varied horticulture can be found in the Victory Gardens, a community garden with hundreds of well-tended plots. Cross a few bridges and you will discover the running track, basketball courts and softball fields. No green space in Boston offers a more peaceful oasis.

Steeped in history, this is one of Boston's most beautiful neighborhoods. Always the home of statesmen, artists and intellectuals, "The Hill" is also the site of the State House, which is the beginning of the Freedom Trail. Cafes and majestic brownstone buildings line the narrow cobblestone streets next to the Boston Common, America's oldest urban park. At the bottom of the hill, along Charles Street, are several antique shops and boutiques full of unusual merchandise. This charming neighborhood has managed to preserve its history without becoming artificially quaint.

A visitor to Boston would have to go to great lengths to avoid running into road construction these days. Boston is home to the largest, most ambitious and most expensive civil engineering project in the world. The Big Dig's purpose is to create a 10-lane underground superhighway to replace the current elevated six lanes that cut through the heart of the city. The space formerly occupied by the elevated highway will become 150 acres of new parkland. An exhibit at the Museum of Science explains the mess.

There are more than 100 places to eat, shop and drink at this historic site. French merchant Peter Faneuil (pronounced FAN-you-wull) gave the hall that precedes the marketplace to his adopted home of Boston in 1742. It has been called the "Cradle of Liberty" because of the number of revolutionaries and abolitionists who delivered important speeches here. The hall is now a tourist center, but public meeting facilities are still available.

The amazing collection of holograms at this museum proves that science can be beautiful. One of the most fun exhibits is the Hall of Hacks, which documents famous pranks pulled by MIT students (expect to see a lot of abuse visited upon the domed roof of a certain building). Other exhibits feature inventions and discoveries of the MIT community. It is worth the price of admission: Adults - USD5, youth (ages 5-18), students, seniors - USD2, children under 5 - free.

Riding the public transit system (known as the "T") is one of the best ways to get around Boston. The four subway lines are designated by colors, Red, Blue, Green and Orange, and the lines intersect at several points downtown. Passengers can transfer between lines free of charge. To find stations, look for circular white signs with a black "T." The base fare for the subway system is USD1. The MBTA Visitor Pass allows unlimited transportation for a single fee. There are also rail lines to the suburbs, bus routes and boat routes. See the Web site for details.

New England Aquarium

Amazing undersea world
Central Wharf
Boston, MA 02110
United States
+1 617 973 5200
http://www.neaq.org/
Since opening in 1969, this waterfront landmark has become one of Boston's biggest tourist attractions. The most famous exhibit, the massive 200,000-gallon "Giant Ocean Tank," has a simulated Caribbean coral reef in which sharks, sea turtles, moray eels and tropical fish cruise by crowds of children pressed against the glass. Other marine galleries contain piranha, sea otters and three species of penguins. As if all that were not enough, the aquarium also offers whale watching cruises, seal shows, and its very own IMAX Theatre. General Admission: USD17.95 for adults, USD9.95 for children 3-11.

Any shopper will enjoy a stroll down this street, which features eight blocks of upscale boutiques, shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. On warm weekends, the sidewalks are teeming with window shoppers, street performers and overflowing outdoor cafes. Located in the historic Back Bay, much of the brownstone architecture is influenced by the Art Nouveau style of the 1920s. There are upscale clothiers like Max Mara. In addition, chic galleries and restaurants, such as Stephanie's of Newbury and Sonsie, attract a well-dressed, monied crowd.

This old neighborhood is the site of the Old North Church and the Paul Revere House. Located along the Boston waterfront, it was the first stop for several waves of immigrants. Italians made it their home in the 1870s. Italian restaurants and pastry shops are crammed into narrow streets, where the smell of garlic and sounds of happy diners fill the air. Hanover and Salem are the two main streets and are often packed with tourists and locals.

Just across Charles Street from the Boston Common, this park is elegantly landscaped with flower beds, lagoons, walking paths and statues, including a notable monument of George Washington on a horse. You can watch couples posing for their wedding photos every summer weekend. The children's story Make Way for Ducklings took place here, and there is a popular sculpture of the ducklings in the northeast corner of the park. A ride in the famous Swan Boats is an essential experience for any visitor.
