Coffee and kabobs |
40 Brattle Street Harvard Square Boston, MA 02138 United States +1 617 492 1557 |
Restaurant? Coffeehouse? Writing workshop? This establishment is all of the above. One thing is for sure: this Harvard Square landmark packs them in for falafel, tea, cerebral conversation and, of course, great Arabian coffee. Pancakes are an American alternative in an otherwise Middle Eastern venue, but no one seems to mind. So eat, drink, and be literary in the company of Harvard University undergrads and other Cambridge literati. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Live music, exotic snacks and great cocktails with names like Zombie, Fog Cutter and the Scorpion Bowl (All Asia's specialty - a mix of rum, peach schnapps and brandy) define this bar. As you can probably guess, it's not exactly a place for the hoity-toity - if you're the kind who likes to let your hair down and spice it up, come on over! There is never a dull moment at this trendy watering hole, and you can even book it for private occasions. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Funky lounge with good food |
92 Hampshire Street Boston, MA 02139 United States +1 617 354 0766 http://www.bsidelounge.com/ |
The slightly out-of-the-way location makes this groovy lounge an unlikely hipster hangout, but city types trek here to dine with Kendall Square techies and neighborhood old-timers. Everyone comes for the creative drinks, funky atmosphere, fried chicken and (no kidding) the free hard-boiled eggs at the bar. The delicious menu, which is far too good to be called 'pub grub', includes Braised Veal Shank and GrilledSsalmon. Details magazine wrote up Joe McGuirk as a great bartender, making him a local celebrity. Review © 2007, Wcities |

There are several Thai restaurants along this stretch of Massachusetts Avenue, but this one has the best atmosphere. Popular with area students and patrons of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, this restaurant serves traditional Thai dishes with many vegetarian options. The seafood dishes are a specialty. Try the shrimp and squid fried rice or the sweet and spicy catfish filet. Rumor has it that there is a secret menu with the really spicy dishes on it. The restaurant serves beer and wine. Tunisian Tango |

Cinnamon, clove and cardamom rule the kitchen at this Tunisian dining establishment near Central Square. The chef's creative use of these savory spices results in a subtle balance of flavor. Goat cheese, ginger, lentils and roasted red chilies are just a few of the unusual ingredients used to accent traditional lamb, beef and couscous entrees. The small dining area is intimate and can feel crowded when busy. Save room for dessert—the cafe owner is a former pastry chef. The cafe, which does not serve alcohol, does not accept credit cards; takes cash only. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A Sit Down Pizza Joint |
27 Church Street Boston, MA 02138 United States +1 617 576 1111 |
Hip and trendy, Cambridge 1 offers a short but adventurous menu in a downtown, refined industrial atmosphere. Thin, crisp crusts manage to walk the line between chewy and crunchy. Toppings range from just the almost raw sauce and fresh mozzarella with basil to lobster—and you can order halves, so try two. The potato, rosemary & fontina pizza is scandalously delicious but the chevre and sorrel is surprisingly dull. The service is friendly and competent. Try for one of the recessed booths if you're a group, or sit at the welcoming bar if you're alone. Stephanie Bostic Review © 2007, Wcities |

The sights, sounds and smells of the kitchen reveal the style of cuisine here soon enough, but a quick look at the mannerisms of many patrons will also give it away. This place is deeply Southern in both taste and feel. Jumbalaya and hush puppies are two of the better dishes here. This place makes them seem classic. The herb-crusted pork loin with mashed potatoes and rendered collard greens is also quite good. Plus the restaurant serves beer and wine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The sign for this restaurant is visible as soon as you step out of the subway station at Davis Square. This eatery is one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Davis landscape. Inside, there's a brightly-lit dining area with linoleum flooring. Plenty of tables are scattered around the sizable interior. The pizzas here are big and good, as are the steak subs and sandwiches. One favorite is the chicken sandwich, which is grilled with a slight barbecue taste. There are also several pasta dishes and a huge beer selection. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Take-out fit for a king |

This space was once a fast food joint. Fortunately, the mediocre burgers have been replaced with tasty hummus and baba ganoosh. This tiny storefront eatery has only a couple of tables, so business is mostly take-out. However, it is good and cheap, so you may not mind standing around Central Square with your falafel wrap. Former local resident Matt Damon, of Good Will Hunting fame, did not mind when he stopped by. The restaurant, which does not have a liquor license, does not accept credit cards; accepts cash only. Namaskar takes a classic approach to Indian food. With plates like Lamb Dosai, Chicken Tandoori, and Chilly Paneer, Namaskar sticks to the traditional, with a focus on Southern India. Dark ambiance and high-walled booths create private settings. Located in quaint yet bustling Davis Square, Namaskar patrons will encounter a young, hip crowd, due to the proximity of Tufts University. Incidently, Namaskar is great for the pre-theater crowd. Contemporary decor meets gourmet food at this Charles Hotel diner. The drinks are deliciously innovative and Noir's Boudoir and other signature martinis are worth the tab. The food is done to perfection but the portions are not very pleasing. Sandwiches, salads, steaks, and an assortment of small plates do justice to the hype. For a romantic night out, Noir certainly scores over most places; the chic establishment is famous for its cocktails and cozy couples. Review © 2007, Wcities |
