The early 1900s brought an end to Boulder's gold rush days and sparked a boom in tourism, but sufficient accommodations were hard to come by. The Hotel Boulderado, a Victorian beauty built in 1909 as the centerpiece to Downtown, laid to rest any worries about the town's ability to take care of tourists.

But even though almost forty hotels, ranging from sleepy-eyed B&Bs and roadside cheap-sleeps to posh luxurious resorts and complete business centers now spread across the valley, Boulder still seems to harbor a love/hate relationship with the hotel developers. On numerous occasions residents banded together (and even taxed themselves) to prevent resorts and hotels from encroaching on the area's beloved open space. So, although Boulder could probably support some eighty hotels, and developers would die to build a resort on every hilltop, the small town integrity continues to prevail.

Business travelers have a multitude of choices. No nonsense hotels fill the business districts, providing comfortable rooms that make you feel like you never left the office. For an escape after the day is done, the downtown accommodations, especially the B&Bs, have all the comforts of home.

During the summer, tourists pour into Boulder filling the hotels, motels, bed-and-breakfasts, and campgrounds. When the University of Colorado (CU) hosts major events, such as graduation or the Conference on World Affairs, rooms are scarce. And good luck finding a room over Memorial Day weekend, when 40,000 runners sprint to the town for the annual Bolder Boulder 10K road race. Most places require at least a month's advance reservation during these times.

Many hotels do not provide smoking rooms, so make sure you check in advance.

Downtown

If you are looking for historical elegance or stately neighborhood charm, there are plenty of fine downtown hotels and bed-and-breakfasts to choose from. Staying downtown in and around the Pearl Street Mall, however, has a hefty price. Most rooms run well over $100 per night, but offer some of the best amenities in the city.

Combine Boulder with Colorado and you have the Hotel Boulderado. Even after a long and rugged history, the hotel is still the pride and joy of Boulder. Louis Armstrong slept here, as did Teddy Roosevelt. A 1980s restoration transformed the place into an opulent gem. Even if you are lodging elsewhere, stop by for a look at the extraordinary architecture, including its magnificent Italian stained glass ceiling. Two restaurants, including the award-winning Q's, and a popular basement nightclub provide the entertainment.

The Coburn House features twelve distinctive rooms exuding an Old World western flair. Posh leather furnishings adorn the interior, and cowboy oil paintings liven up the walls. A complete business center and three banquet facilities make it a perfect stop for meetings, while the in-room fireplaces and whirlpool tubs spark romance.

Scattered about the historic residential districts surrounding downtown are a host of charming bed-and-breakfasts and country inns. If you are looking for a breath of individuality, warm mountain hospitality, or a chance to blend with the locals, the B&B scene is a good choice. The Briar Rose, tucked away in the Goss Gove neighborhood, holds the honor of being Boulder's first bed-and-breakfast. The Honeymoon Room, complete with wood burning fireplaces, draws couples from around the world, and the beautifully manicured courtyard garden is perfect for an evening stroll.

Situated two blocks off the Pearl Street Mall, The Boulder Victoria Inn feels like a grand antique shop. The Earl House Historic Inn occupies a Greek revival mansion and features striking marble floors and a wealth of Victorian comforts. For panoramic views of the Flatirons and the peaks of the Rocky Mountains, check into The Inn on Mapleton Hill. Standing high above downtown nestled beneath towering cottonwoods, the inn started receiving guests in 1889. The current owners live on-site and take great care in preparing the morning's gourmet breakfast. Stunning cathedral ceilings trademark the Pearl Street Inn. Built in 1898, the inn's eight rooms mix Victorian period furniture with modern conveniences, and the pleasant gardens provide a quiet setting for relaxation.

For a comfortable room at an affordable price (by downtown standards), try the University Inn. Although the inn provides easy access to CU and Downtown, the location is off a busy intersection and can get noisy. The Quality Inn, just down the hill from CU, is also relatively inexpensive.

University Hill

Hotels are not the focus of this district, but you might find a few cheap sleeps, including the Boulder International Youth Hostel. The large quarters feature predominantly dormitory style sleeping arrangements, but apartment style rooms, designed for families on an extended stay, are also available.

The Colorado Chautauqua Association rents sixty cottages and rooms in two lodges on the park grounds. The lodging is perfect for those seeking a tranquil environment close to downtown attractions.

28th Street Vicinity

Whether in town for a CU happening or a business event, the accommodations in and around 28th Street offer easy access to both the university and the business districts. Boulder Broker Inn combines stately Victorian elegance with big business. Rooms feature posh leather furnishings, regal antiques, and amazing views of the Flatirons. Plus, the facility has more than 4,000 square feet of meeting space and a steak house perfect for entertaining clients. The Regal Harvest House is an expansive 262-room spread located along Boulder Creek. Rent a mountain bike and wander the bike trails, or take in a game of tennis on one of the fifteen courts. The available meeting space could easily house a small army. The new Boulder Marriott brings a long tradition of excellence to town, and the Courtyard Boulder makes the business crowd happy. Roadside favorites include Golden Buff Lodge and the Best Western Boulder Inn.

Mountains/Foothills

Boulder Canyon's lodging options are perfect for romantic getaways or business travelers wanting a taste of the high country without meandering too far from the job. The Alps Boulder Canyon Inn lies against a mountainside, and is extremely popular for weekend retreats and wedding receptions. The Boulder Mountain Lodge features an array of accommodations, ranging from rustic campsites to comfortable kitchenettes.

Downtown

Boulder
United States
Boulder's historic civic center serves as a gathering place for the entire city. Anchored by Pearl Street, a vibrant thoroughfare boasting a magnificent four-block pedestrian mall, downtown brims with tourists, but is also a lively haven for the eclectic locals. The tree-lined promenade, long ago a refuge for drunken cowboys and prostitutes, is alive with cafes, galleries, brewpubs, restaurants and every type of shopping imaginable. Musicians and performers clutter the Pearl Street Mall vying for attention. It is not uncommon to see a flower child plucking a guitar, small groups of blue-haired urban punk rockers, and even a peaceful band of Hare Krishnas camped on the courthouse lawn along this four-block stretch. Locals pour into downtown nightly to relax and shop. An array of small boutiques and interesting gift shops complement the few national retailers and 15 bookshops.

Geological landmark and popular climbing spot
3198 Broadway (Parks Department)
Boulder, CO 80302

These giant, Pennsylvanian red sandstone slabs rise as a dramatic backdrop to south Boulder and are the town's best-known geological landmarks. The alluvial deposits thrust upward into jagged peaks almost 70 million years ago, during the birth of the Rocky Mountains. Today, residents and visitors alike enjoy hiking around the base and climbing the front face of The Flatirons. Towering 1400 feet above Boulder, the Third Flatiron is one of the most popular climbing routes in North America.

University Hill

Boulder
United States
Known as "The Hill" by locals, the neighborhood is the home of the University of Colorado. Literally parked on a hilltop above downtown, the district provides the typical college town quirkiness and a host of popular attractions including the Heritage Center and the Sommer-Bausch Observatory. Spread across more than 600 acres of rolling landscape, CU is a feat of architectural beauty with old stone buildings topped with red Spanish tiled rooftops. Just moseying about the campus grounds creates a sense of wonder, especially while moving through tree-lined passageways, or gazing into the serene depths of Varsity Pond. Catch a CU Buffalo football game at Folsom Field or take in a concert at Mackey Auditorium. For an abstract pulse of the student body visit the CU Art Gallery which displays contemporary work by revered artists as well as students.

Established in 1876, the year Colorado became a state and Denver became a capital, the university reflects visions of the past while keeping with the growing technological age. The Red Rural Italian Renaissance architecture, implemented on buildings erected after 1912, lush landscaping and gorgeous views of the Flatirons (The) make this one of the most attractive campuses in the nation. Guided tours are available.
