The Agra has been established for more than six years and has space for over 50 diners. The decor is modern and clean; the ambience lively and informal. Booking is advisable, especially at weekends, as this is a very popular venue with Brighton curry eaters. The restaurant boasts a large variety of Balti dishes and caters very well to both meat eaters and vegetarians. The Prawn Kurma Balti is highly recommended with its delicious mild, sweet taste and good quantity of juicy prawns. Review © 2007, Wcities |

7 Pavilion Buildings Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1EE United Kingdom +40 7710 161 562 http://www.alduomo.co.uk |
Residents and visitors to Brighton find Al Duomo and its partner restaurant, Al Forno delightful. Al Duomo is a cool contemporary Italian restaurant and venue with a brown, red, and cream colour scheme, lots of exposed brickwork and sleek leather sofas. Close to the Royal Pavilion, it may appear small from the outside but is actually five floors, with a variety of separate dining and drinking areas. The ground floor is a large open area with high ceilings and a pizza oven, while other floors can accommodate celebrations of up to 90 people. Food is good quality and not too expensive. Try pizza, pasta, fish, meat and salad dishes (£4.10-£9.30). An extensive wine list offers bottles from £9.25-£25.50. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Viva Italia |
36 East Street Brighton BN1 1HL United Kingdom +44 (0)1273 32 4905 http://www.alforno.co.uk/ |
Brighton's first pizzeria, Al Forno, opened in 1973. It is the sister restaurant of another local favourite, Al Duomo, and both are just as bustling and lively as you imagine restaurants in Italy to be. Al Forno has an authentic and rustic feel and being located just by a square in the Lanes, you could almost imagine you're dining out in Roma. And you know what to do when in Rome! The menu is pragmatically Italian, old-style rather than the modern Italian cuisine which has been springing up recently. Delicious pizzas are cooked in a pizza oven and the pastas rarely disappoint. Cheap enough to enjoy some of the dangerously delicious desserts, a bargain at under £3. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This well established restaurant has been in existence since 1977. Recent refurbishment now allows seating for up to 150 curry eaters. The Ashoka is well decorated and smart with a pleasant atmosphere. The traditional, yet extensive, menu offers a good selection of vegetarian and meat options and a choice of fish dishes. Although this restaurant is slightly more expensive than some of the others in this area, the excellent service contributes towards an enjoyable eating experience. Be sure to try the special Sunday buffet lunch from midday-3p. The restaurant is "allergy aware" and will prepare meals to customer requirements. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Truly kitsch |
Kingsway Court First Avenue Brighton, East Sussex BN3 2LR United Kingdom +44 1273 32 3810 |
Hidden underneath a large block of flats in Hove, the Bali Brasserie can be difficult to locate. Once inside the building the first port of call is the Bali bar. The decor is quite bizarre as it clearly hasn't altered since the 1970s. The walls are lined with bamboo and plastic flowers and the bar is covered in tiny mirror tiles. Tacky is not the word. You are welcome to stop by for drinks but then you would be missing the food. The restaurant itself is large and more subtle. The staff are dressed in traditional costume to add an authentic feel. Food is exceptionally good and the menu varied. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is a trendy upstairs bar/restaurant with a balcony overlooking North Laine. Good, quite loud music is played after 8p, with live DJs playing reggae, funk and hip hop on different nights. Hence, this is an extremely fun bar. The food is quite eclectic, with Mexican and pasta as specialties, although the quality is a bit hit and miss. They have Carlsberg, Guinness and Calders on tap and a selection of bottled beers/alcopops, as well as a healthy selection of amusingly named and tasty cocktails. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Bayleaf is a small restaurant seating approximately 30 people. The interior is extremely modern, no flock wallpaper here. Floors and furniture are wooden while walls are tasteful and bright. An informative and unusual menu gives explanations concerning the ingredients in each dish. Presentation is excellent with all portions arriving in small coloured bowls. Dahl and seasonal vegetables accompany every dish. A visit to the Bayleaf is certainly recommended; however, those who enjoy the traditional curry house may be disappointed. The inside of the floating Brighton Pagoda is rather old and traditional, but gives a warm and cosy ambience. The best thing about this restaurant is the view over the sea. The Pagoda has a bright upper deck and a more subdued lower deck, for evening dining. With seating for over 100 - it could be the ideal venue for parties. The menu is quite extensive and should feature something for every taste. The shredded duck spring roll starter was delicious at just over £3 and for mains no dish tops £6.50. Browns has been a favourite local restaurant for well over ten years - its eclectic well-presented food and relaxed atmosphere continues to pull in the crowds. The decor at Browns creates a fresh and exclusive feel. Light wooden floors and pale walls are separated by a generous interjection of palm trees that takes its diners back to the colonial era. One thing about Browns is that you can always rely on the menu to include some good staple pasta, salad and meat-dishes. Prices for main courses tend to hover around the £10 level, but servings are generous, often making a starter superfluous. Service is attentive and friendly, although some of the waiters can get a little stressed during the busy periods. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Set at the edge of a quaint square in The Lanes, this could well be a contender for the best Brighton restaurant. If a full blown gourmet meal is not your preferred choice, the small but stylish oyster bar, annexed to the restaurant, has space at the counter for about six diners. The menu is rather traditional with Dover sole, Grilled Tuna and lobster high on the list. The quality is excellent and the service attentive, making the whole dining experience a real joy. Superb fish and seafood |
25-26 New Road North Laine Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1UG United Kingdom +44 1273 68 2401 |
In total contrast to the lively Fitz's bar downstairs, this restaurant is relaxed and sedate with top London chef, Leighton Jones, creating a predominantly fish menu using only the finest and freshest of locally caught ingredients. Main courses start at reasonable rates and the piece de resistance is the Seafood Platter for two includes a whole dressed lobster, crab claws and oysters amongst other fishy offerings. The restaurant is opposite the Theatre Royal and next door to The Dome, which makes it perfect for a pre or post theatre meal. The restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Traditional Watering Hole |

The Forager is one of the Brighton's oldest watering holes and also one of its most popular. An extremely clean and hygienic bar, the ambiance at Forager is inviting and since the products are locally sourced, the food is extremely fresh. Unlike most British pubs, it caters pretty well to vegetarian customers as they have a decent choice to choose from. For those who love meat, be sure to try out the beef here. Forager has acoustic instruments, slot machines and music as well, though which is barely audible with all buzzing conversations around. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fountain House appeared on the busy Queens Road in the late 1990s. An impressive menu offers a delicious selection of speciality vegetarian and meat based dishes. Yellow walls, polished wooden floor and bright tablecloths give a cheerful ambience. At lunchtime the restaurant does not become too busy but evenings are more crowded. 26 starters are on offer and prices start at £1.80 for garlic bread. The more adventurous can sample dishes such as Sambousak, Batata Kibbey or Fatayer. Main meals will cost no more than £8.00 and begin at a mere fiver. Lunchtime sandwiches filled with falafel or humous make filling snacks at about £3.00 each. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gar's has been serving fine Oriental cuisine for over 10 years. The fantastic smell emanating from this restaurant is enough to make anyone feel hungry. Once tempted inside, light yellow surroundings and Chinese lanterns transport the diner to a world of Eastern promise. Pay no more than £5 for an appetizer or share the special hors d'oeuvre mix including sesame prawns, chicken satay, capital spare ribs and rich squid in salt and chili. Only £12, this starter could be a meal in itself. Why not opt for a three course menu, a great value at £15.50 per head? For those with gigantic appetites the Emperor's menu should suffice! Centrally located, Ghengis Khan's offers a fantastic buffet menu to suit all tastes. Although the barbeque style restaurant is large, it is probably advisable to book before venturing here (and do make sure you haven't eaten before leaving home). The main attraction is the buffet meal. Select from a range of seafood, pasta, meat and fresh vegetables. Add any herbs, spices and sauce then take your choice to the barbeque where an able chef will cook it.To end the meal (if you can manage a dessert) marinated cherries accompanied by warm rich chocolate for dipping is sheer bliss for any chocoholic. 100% vegetarian pub |
5 Trafalgar Street North Laine Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4EQ United Kingdom +44 1273 68 1055 |
This is Brighton's only exclusively vegetarian pub. It is a fine place with a lively, friendly atmosphere and a fireplace. The clientele tends to be local people coming in after work for a few pints. On Friday nights and at weekends the pub attracts a younger crowd. The walled beer garden is extremely pleasant and is heated in winter. The menu features a fantastic range of vegetarian/vegan food which comes in huge portions at very cheap prices. The home-made vegeburgers are lovely. Speciality vegetarian beers include Hoegaarden (a seriously classy, fruity lager), Staropramen, which is a fine Czech lager and a few more standard lagers, bitters and ciders; and of course a range of spirits and organic wine. . You can take your pick from a selection of giant cookies and muffins or from the 31 flavours of Baskin-Robbins ice cream that they sell. Buying a bagful of cookies is better value than buying just one, so what are you waiting for. Coffee and juice is also on offer to wash down those crumbs. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cakes to die for |
4 Pool Valley Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1NJ United Kingdom +44 1273 32 7380 |
Egon Ronay recommended, the Mock Turtle is well known by many Brightonians for it's wonderful cakes. Small and old fashioned inside, the tea rooms offer lunches where one can sample fresh fish and chips, omelette's and various other snacks. Cream teas and cakes really are the best here. All made on the premises with fresh ingredients, it's difficult to know which to choose. Lemon meringue pie is made from fresh local eggs while hazel, banana and orange cake contains many organic ingredients. Dieters beware, there's far too much temptation here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Momma and soul |

Yes, yes, yes, soul food comes to Great Britain, and is served up in bright bright Brighton! Mouthwatering Nachos Supreme and Catfish Goujons with Hushpuppies, all wait for your attention. But it is a real toss up between Momma Cherri's Jambalaya and Rev. Daisy's Southern Fried Chicken is an option if you are fine with oil dripping in your plate and then clogging your arteries. Southern soul food is what Momma serves up, a kind of cuisine relatively new to Brightonites. Or maybe it is the TLC working? Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is Moshi Moshi's first venture outside London. The radically designed building was built especially for the restaurant and features an entire glass wall which slides out in good weather. The perfectly presented sushi passes by your table on a conveyor belt (kaiten) and you select whatever takes your fancy. Salmon sashimi (raw fish) on a bed of rice is just perfect. Don't worry if you don't know a thing about sushi, the staff will guide you in your choices. Lunch is around £10 which is a bargain for the ambience and exquisite food. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fabulous fry-ups |
40 Western Road Hove Brighton, East Sussex BN3 1JD United Kingdom +44 1273 20 2828 |
This two-floor cafe is your typical "greasy spoon". However, Naff Caff is extremely popular with locals, students and anyone requiring nourishment after a heavy night of partying. Breakfasts are the most popular and if venturing to the cafe on a weekend morning, be sure to arrive at a reasonable time - after 11am, it gets really crowded. A massive morning feast complete with fried potatoes, bubble and squeak, mushrooms, egg, sausage, bacon, toast and tea/coffee is around a fiver. A vegetarian version is also on offer. Lunches and light snacks are also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Newly established at the former location of the Madras Balti House, Nile House brings Sudanese and African cuisine to the local community. Redecoration has taken place since the days of the curry house. A red and cream interior gives a fresh new appearance. 70-71 Ship Street The Lanes Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1AE United Kingdom +44 1273 32 9405 |
The popular and established Noori's, situated in Ship Street, is easily reached from North Street or the seafront. The smart but relaxed surroundings - featuring pink-hued but subtle table decorations - seat around 60 people. There are a large selection of Balti dishes such as Zeera Harsha consisting of duck pieces stir fried with black and white cumin seeds. It is also possible to obtain some of the popular vegetarian side dishes, such as Sag Aloo, Aloo Gobi and Chana Bhajee, as full main courses if required. Food is of excellent quality and very fresh. Frozen vegetables are not used at Noori's and real chillies, rather than chilli powder, appear in the hotter curries. Although slightly more expensive than other restaurants Noori's is well worth a visit. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Paris Texas is only 10 minutes from Churchill Square, this is a popular and highly rated American Bistro. The restaurant has been awarded a coveted Les Routiers Cuisine Award. It is an ideal place for coffees, light lunches and evening meals. High quality food is always cooked freshly on the premises by the owner and chef, Karl Simpson. For an afternoon snack one would certainly recommend the Lunch Nachos (around GBP4), a huge plate of corn chips smothered in cheese, salsa, sour cream and guacomole served with a fresh salad. A firm favourite across the whole country, Pizza Express always satisfies and rarely disappoints. If the comfort of a nationwide chain, but with plenty of individuality is for you, look no further. The decor is sleek and chic, with clean modern lines throughout. Despite dark flooring; the strategic lighting and bright touches gives the interior a warm, but elegant feel. In some branches (Hove), the pizzas are prepared and cooked in an open plan kitchen so you can see what is going on. As far as clientele goes, it attracts just about everyone but seems particularly popular with the younger generation. My personal favourite is the American Hot, fabulous succulent pepperoni, with a beautifully crisp base. Add a drizzle of their spicy oils and hey presto! Of course, the selection of Italian and French wines will help to put out the heat. The branch at Church Road, Hove, has jazz music sessions at 7:30p every Tuesday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Set near Brighton Pier, the Prodigal attracts a mixed crowd, although the older generation is far outnumbered by the young Brightonian student and professional gang. Gone are the traditional British pub features such as dull multi-coloured carpets and dark wood-paneled walls have been replaced by light wooden floors and light features. A further bonus is that decent wines are available alongside the selection of popular draft beers. A glass of wine is about GBP3, but then the measures are rather generous. The menu is more restaurant than bar snacks, and offers a great brunch on weekends. What better way to round up the week? Review © 2007, Wcities |

Quentin's has been highly recommended by the Good Food Guide, Egon Ronay and AA Best Restaurants. Burnt orange walls and wooden furniture contribute to a warm rustic interior for up to 35 people to dine out comfortably in relaxed surroundings. The menu changes monthly and one can be sure to find a host of fine cooking on offer. Try braised fennel with chestnut, mushrooms and roast peppers served on a bed of rice with chargrilled yellow courgettes. Wagamama serves up a pan-Asian cuisine that features a fusion of eclectic traditional favorites with modern flavors. The fare is made fresh and all items are featured on a dietary menu, allowing guests full access to the ingredients in their food. Orders are taken via electronic pads, meaning that preparation begins in the kitchen as soon as you have made a choice on what to order. Dishes come to the table in the order that they are prepared, which can be problematic for groups who want to eat together. Start off with a range of dumplings, or dive right into the kare noodle soups. The atmosphere is also a major draw with lots of open, light space and minimalist décor. The end result is a dining experience that has only grown in popularity as new locations have opened worldwide. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If you get overwhelmed by the choice you can always let them do the cooking for you - there is a noodle bar upstairs which is excellent value for money. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Zamdani can be found on the corner of Church Road and Sackville Road, five minutes' walk from the King Alfred Leisure Centre. The restaurant is very spacious, bright and modern with wicker tables and chairs. Although the menu is already varied, the chef will create any dish that is not listed. Those of you who like to order off-menu know who you are. It is useful to know that GM ingredients are not used in this restaurant. Starters vary from GBP2.50-GBP4.50, house specials are listed at around GBP7 and Baltis from GBP5.75-GBP9.00. Although some dishes are quite expensive the quality is excellent and surroundings are very pleasant. Review © 2007, Wcities |
