Cosy comfortable restaurant |
31 Upper North Street Brighton, East Sussex BN1 3FG United Kingdom +44 1273 32 8939 |
This homely restaurant has been serving Brightonians and visitors for several years. The host, Barry, has a reputation for entertaining his guests with fascinating tales and anecdotes. With about five tables and room for 20 diners, the setting is cosy and comfortable. Starters such as mushrooms stuffed with crab and garlic will tantalise the tastebuds. For a dazzling dessert, Grand Marnier trifle should not be missed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Modern Indian on the border |
104 Western Road Brighton, East Sussex BN1 2AA United Kingdom +44 1273 77 3804 |
The Bayleaf is a small restaurant seating approximately 30 people. The interior is extremely modern, no flock wallpaper here. Floors and furniture are wooden while walls are tasteful and bright. An informative and unusual menu gives explanations concerning the ingredients in each dish. Presentation is excellent with all portions arriving in small coloured bowls. Dahl and seasonal vegetables accompany every dish. A visit to the Bayleaf is certainly recommended; however, those who enjoy the traditional curry house may be disappointed. Early diners, before 7:30p (except Sa), can take advantage of the set menu. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Coach House is a cafe, bar and restaurant so feel free to stop by for a full meal or just a quick drink. The restaurant is very attractive with sunny, bright decor and lots of greenery. The bar and lovely outdoor courtyard area are also popular with the twenties/thirties crowd. Food is delicious. Who could resist fresh mussels with newly baked bread, home-made smoked salmon and dill fishcakes, and delicious puds (£7.95-£12.95)? Review © 2007, Wcities |

Crepes and galettes galore |
65 Preston Street Brighton, East Sussex BN1 2HE United Kingdom +44 1273 32 3224 |
Crepe Dentelle may be relatively new, but the expert chef, Philippe, and his family have been making crepes for nearly 60 years. The restaurant itself is small and neat with candlelight and French music creating a charming ambience. The decor is very Breton with its blues and white. The more adventurous may want to try such starters as Les Frogs Legs (no translation needed), marinated with herbs and vegetables. Each of the crepes and galettes has a French name: choose from Maurice, Leon or Michel. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Oh so chic |
45 Gardner Street Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1UN United Kingdom +44 1273 60 3031 |
With strong connections to the renowned English's Oyster Bar and Seafood Restaurant and a position next to the premier performing arts centre Komedia, Curve has some impressive friends. Beautifully styled, Curve has a great location for a coffee in the afternoon or a full meal in the evening. Starters like the local organic mushrooms in puff pastry with a white wine and cream sauce are a treat. Main courses like roast crispy duck, venison sausages and mediterranean vegetable wellington are just a small selection of what is on offer. In summer the whole front opens up to let you watch all the people go by. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wonderful food, beautifully presented, it's no wonder that this cafe always buzzes with life. It is very large and airy with a wide bar and a roomy restaurant area. It only takes a glimmer of sunshine and the chairs and tables go out on the pavement and are quickly filled. The menu has a strong leaning toward the French provincial, although this doesn't pervade all the dishes. The mussels are good and available in the marinieres, tuscan and thai styles. This place is perfect for a mid-shop-stop or a fun evening out. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Superb fish and seafood |
25-26 New Road North Laine Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1UG United Kingdom +44 1273 68 2401 |
In total contrast to the lively Fitz's bar downstairs, this restaurant is relaxed and sedate with top London chef, Leighton Jones, creating a predominantly fish menu using only the finest and freshest of locally caught ingredients. Main courses start at reasonable rates and the piece de resistance is the Seafood Platter for two includes a whole dressed lobster, crab claws and oysters amongst other fishy offerings. The restaurant is opposite the Theatre Royal and next door to The Dome, which makes it perfect for a pre or post theatre meal. The restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays. French finesse |

This stylish French restaurant features yellow walls and pale wood furniture, which add to a light and pleasant environment. It is a popular choice for local people and highly rated, so booking would be advisable. Starters such as Andalouse of baby aubergine caviar with olive salsa are all tempting. Main courses (around GBP13) offer classics, including grills and fish. A separate lunch menu is also available. The wine list offers a good choice of fine wines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stylish seafood |
42 Waterloo Street Hove Brighton, East Sussex BN3 1AY United Kingdom +44 1273 73 3733 |
Fruit de Mer is a compact seafood restaurant tucked away in a side street off the Western Road in Hove. The interior is small and smart with wooden floors and glass topped tables. Sit outside on a warm afternoon and take in the sea air. The order of the day (or evening) has to be seafood. A two course and an evening meal is available. The latter includes dishes such as smoked mackerel pate and pitta bread for starter and Thai style oven black bream to follow. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A unique dining experience |
15-17 Middle Street The Lanes Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1AB United Kingdom +44 1273 32 3605 |
Centrally located, Ghengis Khan's offers a fantastic buffet menu to suit all tastes. Although the barbeque style restaurant is large, it is probably advisable to book before venturing here (and do make sure you haven't eaten before leaving home). The main attraction is the buffet meal. Select from a range of seafood, pasta, meat and fresh vegetables. Add any herbs, spices and sauce then take your choice to the barbeque where an able chef will cook it.To end the meal (if you can manage a dessert) marinated cherries accompanied by warm rich chocolate for dipping is sheer bliss for any chocoholic. 2-3 Pavilion Buildings Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1EE United Kingdom +44 1273 73 7080 http://www.hahaonline.co.uk |
This is one of this writer's favourite bars in Brighton. It is a spacious, airy and modern new eatery in a prime location next to the Royal Pavilion grounds. Seating is comfortable and there newspapers strewn around for customers perusal. There is a great brunch menu and a full breakfast will cost you £5. If you just fancy a drink, there is a good range of coffees and teas and a well stocked bar. The main menu has a slight mediterranean leaning. Starters include crostini and bruschetta. Mains start from £6, try roasted chicken breast with chargrilled polenta. You can also buy oils, chutneys and nuts to re-create the Ha! Ha! experience at home. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fine English fare for all |
41 Church Road Hove Brighton, East Sussex BN3 2BE United Kingdom +44 1273 72 7410 |
Harry's serves traditional English food with a special touch. Once past the attractive blue tiled exterior, one finds light wooden furniture, pale green walls and a huge array of mirrors, some of which are for sale. Staff are most welcoming and the atmosphere pleasant. Breakfasts are served until 4pm and if feeling greedy the "pile up" consists of two fried eggs, back bacon, pork and sage sausage, grilled tomatoes, beans, fried bread, hash browns, black pudding, mushrooms and toast with tea/filter coffee (£7.45). Lighter meals, main courses, house specialities (£7.95-£13.95) and desserts are all listed. There's a good choice of wines, beers, soft drinks and beverages. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Out of Africa |
32 Duke Street Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1AG United Kingdom +44 1273 77 3388 |
Stunningly stylish, Havana attracts a well dressed crowd of diners. Incredibly clean, cream decor with dark wood and beautifully set tables, this restaurant is not for those who want fast food. The front serves as a cafe bar during the day and a cocktail lounge at night. Breakfasts have recently been added to the menu and there are several lovingly prepared lunches on offer. An enticing cafe style menu is a little less pricey. Dinner is a bit more expensive, but worth it for great, contemporary cuisine in stunning surroundings. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dine in the Lanes |
6-7a Market Street Brighton BN1 1HH United Kingdom +44 (0)1273 324584 www.ilbistro.co.uk |
Built in the 18th century, this charming continental restaurant/brasserie is set in the heart of Brighton's Lanes. The menu is impressive, offering French and Italian cuisine using fresh ingredients. Appetisers begin around £1.50, while smoked Scotch salmon is more expensive at over £6.00. Poulet aux raisins (sauteed breast of chicken finished in champagne and cream topped with fresh grapes) is a good example of delicacies served. Vegetarians will find only two options but it's a must for those who like meat or fish. An extensive wine list (£12.50-£21.50) may be perused. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Unfussy food |
14 East Street The Lanes Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1HP United Kingdom +44 1273 20 6554 |
Jacco's is a good family destination, offering unfussy British food as well as pasta and pizza. The restaurant is of medium size, clean and neat with wooden tables and chairs. An extremely varied menu offers English meals, as well as a selection of pizzas and pasta dishes that are rather generic tasting, as might be expected. "Specials" might include such dishes as Barbecue Spare Ribs, or an 8oz Sirloin Steak with herb potatoes and Bernaise Sauce. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pizzeria and Italian cuisine |

A fairly new pizzeria and Italian restaurant, Leonardo boasts friendly, cheerful staff and an extensive menu. Smart but relaxed, this restaurant will please all. A young clientele tends to frequent at weekends when booking might be necessary. Browse the menu on their very informative website. With over 20 starters to choose from, a host of home made pizza and pasta, meat and fish dishes you'll be spoilt for choice. Desserts are equally enticing. Hot chocolate soufflé with pear sauce and ice cream should not be missed. Leonardo offer a two course menu at lunchtime and early evening. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fabulous Latin fodder |
60 Church Road Hove Brighton, East Sussex BN3 2FP United Kingdom +44 1273 778777 |
For nearly ten years Los Amigos has been serving fine Latin food. There's seating for over 70 and the setting is smart but laid back and lively. Be sure to book at weekends: there is live music and a real party atmosphere. A good selection of beers, wines and cocktails are on offer. The menu is huge and making a decision might take a while. Options are plentiful for veggies and meat eaters alike. Paella for up to four can be ordered (£20.95-£39.95) but allow half an hour for preparation. For those who prefer the comfort of their own abode, a delivery service is available from 6pm-11pm daily. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fabulous Pizza |
141 Church Road Hove Brighton, East Sussex BN3 2EA United Kingdom +44 1273 77 0999 |
Situated in Hove since the mid 1990s, this restaurant is a popular pizza and pasta house with locals. Large and spacious, Orsino benefited from a recent renovation. It's always has a fun atmosphere suited for everyone. During the daytime, pop in for cocktails, coffee, cakes or light lunches. In the evening a huge menu offers a wide range of delicious choices. Main dishes such as salads, pizzas, pasta, grills and seafood range from £5-£14. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Perfect for a business lunch, afternoon break or candlelit dinner, this spacious restaurant is a firm favorite with all ages. Staff are friendly and take real pleasure in serving locals and visitors. Appetizers and mains span the usual range of Italian favourites. Specialties include steaks and veal dishes. Desserts feature a delicious Zabaglione which serves two. For the children, a "bambinos" menu is available too. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pizzas with pazzaz |
22 Prince Albert Street The Lanes Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1HF United Kingdom +44 1273 32 3205 http://www.pizzaexpress.co.uk |
A firm favourite across the whole country, Pizza Express always satisfies and rarely disappoints. If the comfort of a nationwide chain, but with plenty of individuality is for you, look no further. The decor is sleek and chic, with clean modern lines throughout. Despite dark flooring; the strategic lighting and bright touches gives the interior a warm, but elegant feel. In some branches (Hove), the pizzas are prepared and cooked in an open plan kitchen so you can see what is going on. As far as clientele goes, it attracts just about everyone but seems particularly popular with the younger generation. My personal favourite is the American Hot, fabulous succulent pepperoni, with a beautifully crisp base. Add a drizzle of their spicy oils and hey presto! Of course, the selection of Italian and French wines will help to put out the heat. The branch at Church Road, Hove, has jazz music sessions at 7:30p every Tuesday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Old Ship Hotel, 31-38 Kings Road Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1NR United Kingdom +44 1273 32 9001 http://www.oldshiphotel-bright... |
This bar/brasserie is part of The Old Ship Hotel. The restaurant is spacious and modern. The food served here hails from around the world with steaks, tempura vegetables and pasta on offer, and is well presented if a bit hit and miss on the quality. The dessert menu offers home-made Sticky Toffee Pudding with Caramel Sauce which tastes divine. Families are welcome although there is no set children's menu. Wines are served by the bottle and all usual bar drinks are available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bold, beautiful brasserie |
102-106 Western Road Hove Brighton, East Sussex BN3 1FA United Kingdom +44 1273 72 0058 |
Large and lively, Richards is situated on the Hove border. Not the best of views, but to be seated outside on a warm day is relaxing, especially if there's food involved. If dining indoors, sunny yellow walls are cheery and bright. The service here is excellent and staff most helpful. Sunday breakfasts are a treat, being so well presented (and always with a smile). Be sure to arrive before 11am as crowds do gather. A daytime menu is available until 6pm including pasta, salads, main courses, desserts, ices and cakes. There's a good selection of drinks and also cocktails at reasonable prices. Review © 2007, Wcities |

51-55 Brunswick East Hove Brighton, East Sussex BN3 1AU United Kingdom +44 1273 77 0002 http://www.sanctuarycafe.co.uk/ |
This friendly and hip venue on three floors houses a renowned Brighton cafe which puts on a wide variety of events almost every night, from live music to poetry, for a small entrance fee. They also provide board games to play whilst drinking your coffee. Originally a completely vegetarian cafe, the menu has recently expanded to offer Burmese, European and African cuisine. Lunches range from home made soups, salads and baguettes. Evening meals include specials like Friday fish suppers - the Calimari in red wine and tomato sauce served with a mushroom risotto is divine. There are no GM foods and organic wines are available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fantastic meatless dishes |
71 East Street Brighton BN1 1HQ United Kingdom +44 (0)1273 72 9051 http://www.terreaterre.co.uk |
This vegetarian restaurant has achieved national acclaim for its fine cuisine. Unlike many vegetarian restaurants, Terre a Terre presents dishes that are made with a light, sophisticated touch. The decor is chic and modern, but takes on an altogether more romantic tone with candles and dimmed lighting in the evening. The food is simply superb—it is beautifully presented, the Twice Baked Camembert Soufflé is divine. This is a deservedly popular restaurant. Be sure to book in advance. Review © 2007, Wcities |
