The Agra has been established for more than six years and has space for over 50 diners. The decor is modern and clean; the ambience lively and informal. Booking is advisable, especially at weekends, as this is a very popular venue with Brighton curry eaters. The restaurant boasts a large variety of Balti dishes and caters very well to both meat eaters and vegetarians. Al Duomo

Residents and visitors to Brighton find Al Duomo and its partner restaurant, Al Forno delightful. Al Duomo is a cool contemporary Italian restaurant and venue with a brown, red, and cream colour scheme, lots of exposed brickwork and sleek leather sofas. Close to the Royal Pavilion, it may appear small from the outside but is actually five floors, with a variety of separate dining and drinking areas. The ground floor is a large open area with high ceilings and a pizza oven, while other floors can accommodate celebrations of up to 90 people. Food is good quality and not too expensive. Try pizza, pasta, fish, meat and salad dishes (£4.10-£9.30). An extensive wine list offers bottles from £9.25-£25.50.

This is a trendy upstairs bar/restaurant with a balcony overlooking North Laine. Good, quite loud music is played after 8p, with live DJs playing reggae, funk and hip hop on different nights. Hence, this is an extremely fun bar. The food is quite eclectic, with Mexican and pasta as specialties, although the quality is a bit hit and miss. They have Carlsberg, Guinness and Calders on tap and a selection of bottled beers/alcopops, as well as a healthy selection of amusingly named and tasty cocktails.

Browns Restaurant & Bar

Colonial chic
3/4 Duke St
The Lanes
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1AH
United Kingdom
+44 1273 32 3501
http://www.browns-restaurant.com
Browns has been a favourite local restaurant for well over ten years - its eclectic well-presented food and relaxed atmosphere continues to pull in the crowds. The decor at Browns creates a fresh and exclusive feel. Light wooden floors and pale walls are separated by a generous interjection of palm trees that takes its diners back to the colonial era. One thing about Browns is that you can always rely on the menu to include some good staple pasta, salad and meat-dishes. Prices for main courses tend to hover around the £10 level, but servings are generous, often making a starter superfluous. Service is attentive and friendly, although some of the waiters can get a little stressed during the busy periods.

This newly established cafe is placed centrally on Brighton's North Street. The atmosphere is relaxed and decor pleasant. The range of jacket potatoes is most appetising with fillings such as roast vegetables with hummus, prawns in lemon mayonnaise and hot mushrooms and cheddar. Wonderful food, beautifully presented, it's no wonder that this cafe always buzzes with life. It is very large and airy with a wide bar and a roomy restaurant area. It only takes a glimmer of sunshine and the chairs and tables go out on the pavement and are quickly filled. The menu has a strong leaning toward the French provincial, although this doesn't pervade all the dishes. The mussels are good and available in the marinieres, tuscan and thai styles. This place is perfect for a mid-shop-stop or a fun evening out.

If you want to grab some breakfast with Brighton locals, then this might be the place for you. It looks like it was designed by a new age hippie straight out of art college, and in fact it probably was. Staff and customers are friendly and relaxed. Full breakfasts, sandwiches, salads, pies and all manner of filling fodder will have you pushing your plate away in satisfied surrender. There is equal choice and value for vegetarians too. Centrally located, Ghengis Khan's offers a fantastic buffet menu to suit all tastes. Although the barbeque style restaurant is large, it is probably advisable to book before venturing here (and do make sure you haven't eaten before leaving home). The main attraction is the buffet meal. Select from a range of seafood, pasta, meat and fresh vegetables. Add any herbs, spices and sauce then take your choice to the barbeque where an able chef will cook it.To end the meal (if you can manage a dessert) marinated cherries accompanied by warm rich chocolate for dipping is sheer bliss for any chocoholic.

This is Brighton's only exclusively vegetarian pub. It is a fine place with a lively, friendly atmosphere and a fireplace. The clientele tends to be local people coming in after work for a few pints. On Friday nights and at weekends the pub attracts a younger crowd. The walled beer garden is extremely pleasant and is heated in winter. The menu features a fantastic range of vegetarian/vegan food which comes in huge portions at very cheap prices. The home-made vegeburgers are lovely. Speciality vegetarian beers include Hoegaarden (a seriously classy, fruity lager), Staropramen, which is a fine Czech lager and a few more standard lagers, bitters and ciders; and of course a range of spirits and organic wine.

The front serves as a cafe bar during the day and a cocktail lounge at night. Breakfasts have recently been added to the menu and there are several lovingly prepared lunches on offer. Wagamama serves up a pan-Asian cuisine that features a fusion of eclectic traditional favorites with modern flavors. The fare is made fresh and all items are featured on a dietary menu, allowing guests full access to the ingredients in their food. Orders are taken via electronic pads, meaning that preparation begins in the kitchen as soon as you have made a choice on what to order. Dishes come to the table in the order that they are prepared, which can be problematic for groups who want to eat together. Start off with a range of dumplings, or dive right into the kare noodle soups. The atmosphere is also a major draw with lots of open, light space and minimalist décor. The end result is a dining experience that has only grown in popularity as new locations have opened worldwide.

Open kitchens are the focal point of the restaurant which boasts healthy meals, due to wok style cooking. Order either Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Japanese or Malaysian cuisine for an authentic meal - the pad thai and rare beef salad are recommended. Most main meals won't cost more than £8 per person and there's plenty to choose from. They also provide a children's menu with activity book and free face painting on a Sunday lunchtime.

This is an authentic Oriental minimarket where you can pick up anything from tinned squid and tai chi slippers to blue and white china tea sets and woks. They sell a wide range of cooking sauces, fresh herbs and vegetables. The staff will be able to advise you on recipes. If you get overwhelmed by the choice you can always let them do the cooking for you - there is a noodle bar upstairs which is excellent value for money.

blind lemon alley

Hidden in an alley, in the Lanes area, this tiny restaurant has been serving fine American-style food for over 10 years. There is an almost rustic feel to blind lemon alley, and its cosiness is appealing. Try and catch the live blues music on Sunday evenings if you can. Starters begin at £3.95 and main courses such as home-made chillies, burgers and salads are all around the £6 mark. Specials include catfish and crab fishcakes with peach salsa dip. Be sure to sample blind lemon's world famous home made banoffee pie—delicious!
