This is surely where Jamie Oliver would shop if he came to Brighton. The best of cheeses from around Europe are displayed along the length of a huge cheese counter. Don't be afraid to ask for expert advice and for a taster - make the most of the benefits of a specialist shop as you will certainly be paying more than you do for supermarket plastic packed cheddar. Accompany oak-smoked cheeses with their olive foccacia bread or sundried tomatoes and wash down with a bottle of their Breton cider. The produce here makes for a perfect picnic in the nearby Pavilion Gardens. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This ubiquitous shop believes in innovative design and is much more daring than the adult version. The staff are very friendly and are happy to help children choose outfits. Like sales at Gap everywhere, sales here are incredibly good value, with jeans going for as little as £5. There is one floor for baby clothes and one for children up to age 13. The larger sizes equate with a women's size ten, so parents can pick up a few things for themselves. Review © 2007, Wcities |

H&M Kids cater for the tiniest to teens, with sizes up to 14 years, much to the disappointment of many parents. They make hard-wearing and good value children's clothes, with children firmly in mind. The designs are fashionable and many feature cartoon characters. Apart from the mandatory t-shirts and cargo pants, there are accessories, nightwear, swimwear and novelty umbrellas. The fitting rooms are sturdy, in case of temper tantrums, and there is a cartoon area to avoid these happening in the first place. Review © 2007, Wcities |

5 Nile Pavilions, Nile Street The Lanes Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1HW United Kingdom +44 1273 22 0581 |
Famous for incorporating crochet and outlandish patterns into haute couture, Karen Millen adds a touch of class with her use of rich, traditional fabrics. Despite being a fashion boutique, you won't find many little black dresses on display. Classic cuts that never reveal too much meet the catwalk styles with pinks and turquoises. This is a place for evening and special event wear as they don't really design casual outfits. You will find denim but always with some original touches using embroidery or patchwork. Sizes are user friendly coming in a 1, 2 and 3. Expect to pay around £120 for a dress, although you can pick up some bargains in the sales which are a good time to invest in coats. The name suggests an eclectic mix of music and that's what you will find here, although when small shops choose not to specialize it usually means the selection is fairly arbitrary. That is not to say bad however - there are some excellent classic R&B albums and a good Indie/New Wave section. 35 Upper St James's Street Brighton, East Sussex BN2 1JN United Kingdom +44 1273 68 6869 |
This shop is a recent addition to Kemp Town's quirkiness and although it isn't centrally positioned, it would be difficult to miss as a yellow submarine is welded to the front. It is the first shop in the South, outside London, to be devoted to the Beatles. Memorabilia includes books, teapots, armchairs, biscuit jars, signed pictures and even a fruit machine depicting the band in stock. The owners Jane and Meg (who is from New York) have created a shrine to the Beatles, with a collection of drawings by illustrator Heinz Edelman. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Difficult to miss, it has a large flag flying outside to announce its arrival in this classy area of town. The shop itself is very stylish, with spotlights shining on large photographs of male models. The suits here are exquisite and very modern, with prices ranging from £300 to £800. The staff will help you to complete the look with a two-tone shirt and tie combination. The more casual side of Reiss is very up-to-the-minute and trend conscious with cropped trousers, pink shirts worn open over white t-shirts and cream leather jackets. They offer an interest free charge account. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This small shop is tucked away in a pedestrianised area near the Pool Valley Coach Station. Selling a variety of second hand designer clothes and end of line stock, Revisions sells Prada, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Dior, Galliano, Westwood and Armani among many others. Not just a place to buy great bargains, such as Louis Vuitton saddlebags and Gucci shirts, but also a place to make some money from your old clothes. The shop will act as an agent and take around 50 per cent commission from any sales. And you won't find any snobbery here - the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This independent music shop is small and make-shift but gives the impression that it just doesn't care. The place to buy gig tickets - it is often the only south coast ticket outlet for events such as the Big Chill Festival. The staff are helpful and very apologetic for the £2 charge they make for paying by card. The handwritten posters in the window give all the latest information including a festival update, a "coming soon" list of albums and a "just arrived" list to make you feel you are ahead of the rest. The Rounder Phat Trax list is a compilation of their recommended buys. Review © 2007, Wcities |

You can be forgiven for feeling intimidated by the cool-urban-sportlife vibe of this shop (despite the comical spray-canned graffiti man welcoming you at the doorway) found at the entrance to the North Laine area. However for owners and seekers of high impact skateboards, skate scooters, roller blades and flexi-foil windsurf-boards, this will be a home from home. There is skate and surf wear for men and women and chrome bins brimming with essential accessories such as hats, wallets, watches, key-chains and stickers. This shop thrives on the custom of international students and tourists, whose hearts' desire is a snow-shaker of the Royal Pavilion. Selling a variety of souvenirs for London, from fridge magnets of Big Ben to tea towels, display plates, coasters and trays, it may be easy to forget that you are actually visiting Brighton. However there are Brighton mugs, t-shirts, ashtrays, postcards and wooden carvings. There are more generically British buys such as Union Jack flags, toys and dolls and car stickers depicting different areas of the UK. It is also a newsagent and a bureau de change.
