A Lot of Gaul

Ooh la la
32 Kensington Gardens
North Laine
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4AL
United Kingdom
+44 1273 62 1135
This shop provides a flavour of France for those who haven't quite made it as far as the nearby Newhaven ferry port. Complete with its own Eiffel Tower, A Lot of Gaul is a Mecca for Francophiles - maps, literature, boules and Breton stripey sweaters can all be found here. Children's books recounting the tales of French heroes Tin-Tin, Babar and Asterix are in abundance. A great place to buy authentic gifts for friends forgotten whilst on holiday and perfect for lovers of French music.

This American super bookstore is relatively new to Brighton - you'll find a huge range of books and music, of course, as well as magazines, diaries and calendars. Borders organizes regular book signings and talks by authors. They have a cafe if you wish to peruse your new novel or magazine over a cafe latte. They have a special order service for all UK and US books and will deliver to any address in the world. With two floors of books, it is tempting to stay there for hours.

Brighton Books

Books bought and sold
18 Kensington Gardens
North Laine
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4AL
United Kingdom
+44 1273 69 3845
Customers debate high-brow subjects at the counter, while a couple of cats laze about the shop. There are two floors well stocked with most subjects found on a comprehensive university syllabus and more general subjects, including Travel, Archaeology, Architecture, Journalism, Art History, Humour, Sport and Leisure. The books are mainly hardbacks and well kept so the prices are greatly reduced; some rarer magazines are fairly expensive. There is a good local history section. Books are bought if they are in mint condition.

Herbal remedies

North Laine
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4AL
United Kingdom
+44 1273 601464
http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/
Originally based in London's Covent Garden, this shop for herbal remedies arrived in Brighton a few years ago. Selling herbal tinctures, natural toiletries, food supplements and homeopathic remedies, the staff are very well informed, although they can't actually choose a remedy for you. They sell books on such subjects as Homeopathy and Shiatsu, alongside bathroom accessories and oil burners. Their soaps smell divine and ingredients such as sea salt, seaweed, almond and aloe vera seem just as good for relaxing the mind as the body. Their pre-packed boxes for special occasions make great presents.
