Asda

Value for money
Brighton Marina
Brighton, East Sussex BN2 5UZ
United Kingdom
+44 1273 60 6611
http://www.asda.co.uk
A good place for food shopping if you travel by car as it has a very large car park. It is also well known for its price rollback promotions, where hundreds of prices are kept low, so you'll find plenty of bargains. The range is excellent, as it is one of the largest supermarkets in Brighton. There is a clothing department, which is good for casualwear and shoes. They also have a delicatessen, a large bakery, fresh fish, a newsagent, a music section, and large meat and freezer departments. They also have a good selection of flowers and plants.

Brighton Flea Market

Unusual shopping experience
31A Upper St James Street
Brighton, East Sussex BN2 1JN
United Kingdom
+44 1273 62 4006
If any one shop can sum up the atmosphere and mixture of people in Kemp Town, it is here. An eclectic collection of the fascinating, the rare, the ornamental and the just plain useless housed in a garish pink building. Over 60 independent stalls selling a variety of antiques (some genuine), furniture, bric-a-brac and collectibles are housed within these walls. There are no pressure salesmen, so it is worth a visit, even if you have no intention of buying anything.

In the heart of Kemp Town, this shop caters for the needs of the local gay community. That is if your needs include leather bondage gear. For the less adventurous, clothes include cropped trousers, tight vests, sunglasses and Punto Blanco underwear. Great gifts include Tyson dolls and Elvis Presley memorabilia. Also selling videos, books and magazines, it is a good place to find out about gay club nights with posters and flyers found near the entrance. As it opens until late on Friday and Saturday, make it your first point of call if you're in Brighton for a weekend of clubbing.

Dolly

Sixties chic
46 Sydney Street
North Laine
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4EP
United Kingdom
+44 1273 69 3506
One of the best things about this shop is the relaxed atmosphere. You can guarantee that the shop assistant will be reading the paper and a cat will be sitting like Bagpuss on the counter. And like this infamous cat, the shop is a symbol of all that is retro. It is like a huge dressing up box, so the moral of this shopping lesson is "Search and Ye shall find"! It is a good place for Farah trousers and other fashion treasures. Upstairs, retro furniture can be found from chairs to hostess trolleys, so you can create the full effect.

You'll find this small specialist shop at the end of the road which continues on from St James's Street. Obsessed with all that makes the jogging experience complete, they stock trainers, lycra shorts, vests and other clothing in Gore-Tex fabrics at excellent prices. This is either a hangout for joggers or they have plenty of staff, as there always seems to be a lot of people around sharing advice and information about local runs. (You'll find a variety of leaflets for the same purpose.) Other products on sale include energy supplements, knee supports and those all-important socks and blister recovery packs.

Penny Lane Gallery

Beatlemania
35 Upper St James's Street
Brighton, East Sussex BN2 1JN
United Kingdom
+44 1273 68 6869
This shop is a recent addition to Kemp Town's quirkiness and although it isn't centrally positioned, it would be difficult to miss as a yellow submarine is welded to the front. It is the first shop in the South, outside London, to be devoted to the Beatles. Memorabilia includes books, teapots, armchairs, biscuit jars, signed pictures and even a fruit machine depicting the band in stock. The owners Jane and Meg (who is from New York) have created a shrine to the Beatles, with a collection of drawings by illustrator Heinz Edelman.

Yamama

Alternative trends
92 Trafalgar Street
North Laine
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4ER
United Kingdom
+44 1273 68 9931
As this shop is situated at the furthest end of North Laine, it could be easy to miss. For the non-label conscious, this shop provides all the best styles in natural fabrics and at reasonable prices. With Hawaiian shirts and baggy trousers for the men and Chinese sandals and knee length skirts for the girls, this is where it's at. In front of the counter you'll find a nice selection of silver jewellery and to the side a huge collection of club flyers and posters. It's worth taking the time to look through the bargain bin.
