This is surely where Jamie Oliver would shop if he came to Brighton. The best of cheeses from around Europe are displayed along the length of a huge cheese counter. Don't be afraid to ask for expert advice and for a taster - make the most of the benefits of a specialist shop as you will certainly be paying more than you do for supermarket plastic packed cheddar. Accompany oak-smoked cheeses with their olive foccacia bread or sundried tomatoes and wash down with a bottle of their Breton cider. The produce here makes for a perfect picnic in the nearby Pavilion Gardens.

This shop is neatly tucked away in the Lanes, but attracts a crowd whenever it is commissioned to design a cake. This has got to be the most wacky cake shop in the South, if not the world at large! Cakes are displayed on stands like flower arrangements and a similar amount of work goes into them. From a spiky chocolate fetish cake to a three-tiered gateaux complete with iced vegetable decoration, they will create your wildest edible desire. Creativity comes at a price so expect to pay upto £3000 for a wedding cake. If you just want a nibble, a chocolate action man will set you back a mere £10.

One of the best things about this shop is the relaxed atmosphere. You can guarantee that the shop assistant will be reading the paper and a cat will be sitting like Bagpuss on the counter. And like this infamous cat, the shop is a symbol of all that is retro. It is like a huge dressing up box, so the moral of this shopping lesson is "Search and Ye shall find"! It is a good place for Farah trousers and other fashion treasures. Upstairs, retro furniture can be found from chairs to hostess trolleys, so you can create the full effect.

Don't forget to check out the inexpensive accessory range - jewellery includes both seasonal pieces and classic silver designs. The shop is well designed with large fitting rooms in the basement and plenty of seating in the shoe section.

Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1AH
United Kingdom

This trainer shop stands out from the crowd with its neon window lights - which sometimes makes it difficult to assess the colour of your new purchase until you leave the bright glare behind. The staff are very trendy yet helpful. With a huge range of the very latest in trainer design for both men and women, this shop has proved popular with Brighton's clubbers. Go there for labels such as Acupuncture, Camper, Nike and Adidas. As soon as these companies bring out new styles, this is where you will find them.

Old Village

French Bohemia
7 Duke Street
The Lanes
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1AH
United Kingdom
+44 1273 20 4747
This boutique sells the best in French fashions with a collection of Anne Fontaine's designs. The floral prints and ruffled shirts are as feminine as you'll find at Laura Ashley's, but with a more sassy and bohemian twist. Soft lilacs, satins and layers of chiffon contrast with sequin covered bikinis, embroidered denim and animal prints. The consensus seems to be that accessories must include a pair of mules and a trendy shopping trolley. You can even splash out on room fragrance for £15. French perfume and scarves will complete any look from here, whether it is a feminine suit or a contemporary item of jewellery.

Independent sounds
19 Brighton Square
The Lanes
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1HD
United Kingdom
+44 1273 32 5440
This independent music shop is small and make-shift but gives the impression that it just doesn't care. The place to buy gig tickets - it is often the only south coast ticket outlet for events such as the Big Chill Festival. The staff are helpful and very apologetic for the £2 charge they make for paying by card. The handwritten posters in the window give all the latest information including a festival update, a "coming soon" list of albums and a "just arrived" list to make you feel you are ahead of the rest. The Rounder Phat Trax list is a compilation of their recommended buys.

+44 1273 32 3633
You can be forgiven for feeling intimidated by the cool-urban-sportlife vibe of this shop (despite the comical spray-canned graffiti man welcoming you at the doorway) found at the entrance to the North Laine area. However for owners and seekers of high impact skateboards, skate scooters, roller blades and flexi-foil windsurf-boards, this will be a home from home. There is skate and surf wear for men and women and chrome bins brimming with essential accessories such as hats, wallets, watches, key-chains and stickers. As anyone into extreme sports will know, you have to learn to laugh at yourself.

This small silver shop is beautifully decorated with a lilac mosaic exterior. Jewelery is displayed on stones and slate, reminding the customer of the natural origins of the silver that is worked into the pieces. Rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and tie pins are all made from sterling and sandblasted silver. Chunky identity bracelets in this wonderful collection of jewelery balance delicate Celtic designs. Precious stones are incorporated into some designs, with Cubic Zirconia, Amethyst, Green Amber, Amber, Rose Quartz and Peridot on display.

Snooper's Paradise

Brilliant bric a brac
7/8 Kensington Gardens
North Laine
Brighton BN1 4AL
United Kingdom
+44 (0)1273 60 2558
Snooper's Paradise holds thousands of square feet of antiques, bric a brac and vintage clothing over two floors. There is a small Art Deco section on the first floor, which is worth visiting. The new-age club-wear looks slightly out of place in the window display, but it adds to the eclecticism of this Aladdin's cave.

This is one of the nicest places to shop for second hand retro clothing. The window display complete with a retro Coca-Cola refrigerator should draw you in. With clothes for girls and boys they have a good range of fitted ski jackets, shirts, leather coats and cute underwear as outerwear slips. Some items are pretty exclusive - take a pair of Big-Foot furry boots for instance. Definitely the place to come for a more individual look.

Streetwise

A taste for tourists
14 Pavilion Buildings, Castle Square
Central Brighton
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1EE
United Kingdom
+44 1273 72 9948
This shop thrives on the custom of international students and tourists, whose hearts' desire is a snow-shaker of the Royal Pavilion. Selling a variety of souvenirs for London, from fridge magnets of Big Ben to tea towels, display plates, coasters and trays, it may be easy to forget that you are actually visiting Brighton. However there are Brighton mugs, t-shirts, ashtrays, postcards and wooden carvings. There are more generically British buys such as Union Jack flags, toys and dolls and car stickers depicting different areas of the UK. It is also a newsagent and a bureau de change.

Sunday Market

Big & Brash
Brighton Station Car Park
(off Trafalgar Street)
Brighton, East Sussex
United Kingdom

Serious bargain hunters will reach this huge market in the early hours, but most people stroll in after a leisurely Sunday brunch. It gets busy but as it is hidden behind Brighton's train station it remains an enigma to many Brightonians. Expect to find record stalls, furniture, antiques, clothes, a butcher and a fruit and vegetable stall amongst the regular crowd of car booters selling general junk. There is a cafe selling bacon sandwiches and cups of tea to replenish your strength after a lap of the market.

This small shop has two floors of trendy clothes for the skate scene dudes and the clubbing fraternity who like their urban sportswear. With labels like Eastpak, Bench Addict, Dickies, Dirty Dog, Ben Davis, Performance and Hooch, there's not a lot you won't find. The counter is rather reminiscent of the decks at a club, and the owner is very friendly.

Anything with a beat

Specialising in house, garage, soul, swing, hip-hop, jazz, funk and rare groove, Urban Records provide a service for those "looking for the perfect beat". It is small and trendy, as is de rigueur for record shops in the North Laine. Browsers can content themselves with the record sleeves of latest releases hung on display in the window, whilst serious shoppers can seek out DJ promos and plastic boxes brimming with vinyl. They also sell tickets, tapes and other related merchandise.

Vitas Shoes

Chunky sandals and boots
33/34 Gardner Street
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1UN
United Kingdom
+44 1273 57 1175
This shop has expanded to fill two adjoining shops in recent years, attesting to its popularity - especially with the vertically challenged as many of their sandals, shoes and boots are chunky. They are good for cowboy boots and biker boots and metal top-capped heavy punk numbers as modeled by the staff of Penetration, the tattoo parlor up the road. Sandals come in black and brown leather, many with wooden soles. They cost reasonably but are half price at sale time, which is great if you need last minute beach sandals. They also sell some clothes.

A Brighton institution

+44 1273 67 3744
This is a second hand record shop par excellence. Not only does it stock a huge treasure of lost and forgotten gems, it also deals in tapes, CDs, music books and fanzines. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and can guide you to within an inch of that Dusty Springfield track you were searching for among the myriad nooks and crannies of the shop. It's on two floors: the ground floor specialising in albums, books, cassettes and CDs and the basement is full with 12" and 7" vinyl. There's a reasonable pricing policy and they buy as well as sell. And don't worry if you can't find a copy of the album you want, there's a library under the shelves. A must for music lovers.
