Ooh la la |
32 Kensington Gardens North Laine Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4AL United Kingdom +44 1273 62 1135 |
This shop provides a flavour of France for those who haven't quite made it as far as the nearby Newhaven ferry port. Complete with its own Eiffel Tower, A Lot of Gaul is a Mecca for Francophiles - maps, literature, boules and Breton stripey sweaters can all be found here. Children's books recounting the tales of French heroes Tin-Tin, Babar and Asterix are in abundance. A great place to buy authentic gifts for friends forgotten whilst on holiday and perfect for lovers of French music. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Animal magic |
12 Bond Street North Laine Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1RD United Kingdom +44 1273 20 6836 |
It's difficult to walk past The Animal House without at least stopping to look through the window. Like a zoo for soft toys, this shop has cuddly panda bears and cute elephants, all the size of your favourite niece or nephew. Far too adorable to resist, especially the beanbag-like rattle-snake. For adult animal lovers there's carved wood pieces, ceramics, stationery and jewellery, all with a four-legged theme. For gifts this is the perfect place for all that is animal. Seafront shops and galleries |
Kings Road Arches Brighton, East Sussex BN1 United Kingdom |
A series of small, interesting studios and shops under the arches of the promenade where local painters, sculptors and toy-makers make and sell their wares. It is a pleasant area to wander and marvel at the talent on display and perhaps pick up a unique souvenir of Brighton. Local artist Daniel Laurence has a shop selling his beautiful blue seascapes. There is a metalwork workshop where you can see the artist working on his figurative sculptures. Small gifts and prints are also on sale in the units for those who don't want to take home a full size masterpiece. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Global kitsch |

An Aladdin's cave of kitsch. With everything from Hello Kitty purses to Eskimo slippers, Blackout is the ideal place for weird gifts and unique home accessories. The staff are a widely travelled collective. They can be trusted to advise on which bindi matches which eco-friendly scarf. And they're not averse to having a laugh at your choice of joke card from their vast original and recycled range. In fact you leave convinced that their mission in life is to bring you clothes, accessories and delightfully inessential bits and bobs from all over the universe. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A taste for tourists |
14 Pavilion Buildings, Castle Square Central Brighton Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1EE United Kingdom +44 1273 72 9948 |
This shop thrives on the custom of international students and tourists, whose hearts' desire is a snow-shaker of the Royal Pavilion. Selling a variety of souvenirs for London, from fridge magnets of Big Ben to tea towels, display plates, coasters and trays, it may be easy to forget that you are actually visiting Brighton. However there are Brighton mugs, t-shirts, ashtrays, postcards and wooden carvings. There are more generically British buys such as Union Jack flags, toys and dolls and car stickers depicting different areas of the UK. It is also a newsagent and a bureau de change.
