http://www.bordersstores.com/
This American super bookstore is relatively new to Brighton - you'll find a huge range of books and music, of course, as well as magazines, diaries and calendars. Borders organizes regular book signings and talks by authors. They have a cafe if you wish to peruse your new novel or magazine over a cafe latte. They have a special order service for all UK and US books and will deliver to any address in the world. With two floors of books, it is tempting to stay there for hours.

Music Meltdown Records

Eclectic mixes
10 Sydney Street
North Laine
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4EN
United Kingdom
+44 1273 60 8806
The name suggests an eclectic mix of music and that's what you will find here, although when small shops choose not to specialize it usually means the selection is fairly arbitrary. That is not to say bad however - there are some excellent classic R&B albums and a good Indie/New Wave section. Dance music is melted down to a category described as "All kinds of dance music" which may suggest where the owner's interests lie. They buy and sell tapes, CDs and records. Albums sell from between £5 and £8.

Rounder Records

Independent sounds
19 Brighton Square
The Lanes
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1HD
United Kingdom
+44 1273 32 5440
This independent music shop is small and make-shift but gives the impression that it just doesn't care. The place to buy gig tickets - it is often the only south coast ticket outlet for events such as the Big Chill Festival. The staff are helpful and very apologetic for the £2 charge they make for paying by card. The handwritten posters in the window give all the latest information including a festival update, a "coming soon" list of albums and a "just arrived" list to make you feel you are ahead of the rest. The Rounder Phat Trax list is a compilation of their recommended buys.

Urban Records

Anything with a beat
24 Gardner Street
North Laine
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1UP
United Kingdom
+44 1273 62 0567
http://www.urbanrecords.co.uk
Specialising in house, garage, soul, swing, hip-hop, jazz, funk and rare groove, Urban Records provide a service for those "looking for the perfect beat". It is small and trendy, as is de rigueur for record shops in the North Laine. Browsers can content themselves with the record sleeves of latest releases hung on display in the window, whilst serious shoppers can seek out DJ promos and plastic boxes brimming with vinyl. They also sell tickets, tapes and other related merchandise.

The ultimate in stationery, books and magazines, this shop is well-established as a wholesaler for these products. The two floors are well organized so it is easy to find exactly what you are looking for whether it be teenage books, children's reference material, educational reading or bestsellers. Novels are arranged A-Z by Author name and there is a good selection of maps for both Britain and overseas. Magazines subjects include computing, music, film and photography, lifestyle, gardening and fashion. There are also gifts for children with a good choice of activity packs, wrapping paper and greetings cards. The multi-media section includes pre-pay mobile phones, DVDs, CD-ROMS and blank tapes.

Wax Factor

A Brighton institution
24 Trafalgar Street
North Laine
Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4EQ
United Kingdom
+44 1273 67 3744
This is a second hand record shop par excellence. Not only does it stock a huge treasure of lost and forgotten gems, it also deals in tapes, CDs, music books and fanzines. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and can guide you to within an inch of that Dusty Springfield track you were searching for among the myriad nooks and crannies of the shop. It's on two floors: the ground floor specialising in albums, books, cassettes and CDs and the basement is full with 12" and 7" vinyl. There's a reasonable pricing policy and they buy as well as sell. And don't worry if you can't find a copy of the album you want, there's a library under the shelves. A must for music lovers.
