Animal magic |
12 Bond Street North Laine Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1RD United Kingdom +44 1273 20 6836 |
It's difficult to walk past The Animal House without at least stopping to look through the window. Like a zoo for soft toys, this shop has cuddly panda bears and cute elephants, all the size of your favourite niece or nephew. Far too adorable to resist, especially the beanbag-like rattle-snake. For adult animal lovers there's carved wood pieces, ceramics, stationery and jewellery, all with a four-legged theme. For gifts this is the perfect place for all that is animal. They are well known for their platform trainers in glitter fabric, pony skin, patent leather and suede. All the latest styles can be found with the unique touches which are the Buffalo trademarks. You will find pink crocodile print knee-length boots and more sedate kitten heel mules. They are good value considering they'll last you for ages. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This shop is neatly tucked away in the Lanes, but attracts a crowd whenever it is commissioned to design a cake. This has got to be the most wacky cake shop in the South, if not the world at large! Cakes are displayed on stands like flower arrangements and a similar amount of work goes into them. From a spiky chocolate fetish cake to a three-tiered gateaux complete with iced vegetable decoration, they will create your wildest edible desire. Creativity comes at a price so expect to pay upto £3000 for a wedding cake. If you just want a nibble, a chocolate action man will set you back a mere £10. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Like sales at Gap everywhere, sales here are incredibly good value, with jeans going for as little as £5. There is one floor for baby clothes and one for children up to age 13. The larger sizes equate with a women's size ten, so parents can pick up a few things for themselves. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This quaint shop is home to Art Deco and Art Noveau collectables. The picture rail makes the shop seem like a front room and you can be forgiven for feeling as if you've stepped back in time. Furniture includes walnut wood dressers, screens and mirror. Lamps, glass lightshades, vases and telephones make perfect accessories to create a subtler 1920s look. Classic cuts, wacky prints |
5 Nile Pavilions, Nile Street The Lanes Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1HW United Kingdom +44 1273 22 0581 |
Famous for incorporating crochet and outlandish patterns into haute couture, Karen Millen adds a touch of class with her use of rich, traditional fabrics. Despite being a fashion boutique, you won't find many little black dresses on display. Classic cuts that never reveal too much meet the catwalk styles with pinks and turquoises. This is a place for evening and special event wear as they don't really design casual outfits. You will find denim but always with some original touches using embroidery or patchwork. Sizes are user friendly coming in a 1, 2 and 3. Expect to pay around £120 for a dress, although you can pick up some bargains in the sales which are a good time to invest in coats. They also sell matching shoes and handbags. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is definitely a shop for grown up women and clothes conscious little girls. That's not to say that the designs are formal however. In fact they are well known for the flow of their cut and use of delicate fabrics. Textiles are drowned in fantastic beading and sequins. Chiffons, linens and silks in the colours of the season are used to make ideal outfits for wedding guests. They also have readymade bridesmaids' gowns. The girls' clothes go up to age 10 and are colourful and traditional, with gingham and embroidered flowers. The accessory range is excellent, with hats, sarongs, jewellery and their own perfume. French Bohemia |
7 Duke Street The Lanes Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1AH United Kingdom +44 1273 20 4747 |
This boutique sells the best in French fashions with a collection of Anne Fontaine's designs. The floral prints and ruffled shirts are as feminine as you'll find at Laura Ashley's, but with a more sassy and bohemian twist. Soft lilacs, satins and layers of chiffon contrast with sequin covered bikinis, embroidered denim and animal prints. The consensus seems to be that accessories must include a pair of mules and a trendy shopping trolley. You can even splash out on room fragrance for £15. French perfume and scarves will complete any look from here, whether it is a feminine suit or a contemporary item of jewellery. Review © 2007, Wcities |

14 Pavilion Buildings, Castle Square Central Brighton Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1EE United Kingdom +44 1273 72 9948 |
This shop thrives on the custom of international students and tourists, whose hearts' desire is a snow-shaker of the Royal Pavilion. Selling a variety of souvenirs for London, from fridge magnets of Big Ben to tea towels, display plates, coasters and trays, it may be easy to forget that you are actually visiting Brighton. However there are Brighton mugs, t-shirts, ashtrays, postcards and wooden carvings.
