"Cumbooquepa" was the largest private home in Brisbane in the 1890s. Then it was a boarding house until 1919 and is now a private girls school. It is red brick and cement render with steep slate roofs and stained glass windows depicting characters from Shakespeare. The name "Somerville" was in honour of a nineteenth century Scottish teacher. A delightful touch, as it is a girls school, are the winged mermaid bronze gas light brackets on the veranda. Review © 2009, Wcities |
