Supplying the city's skateboarders |
16 Park Row Bristol BS1 5LJ United Kingdom +44 117 914 7783 |
This is another of Bristol's skateboarding shops - if you've been here longer than a couple of hours you'll surely have noticed how big that "sport" is here. This place is always full of young skaters buying their wheels, boards and the clothes that complete the look (i.e. unfeasibly baggy trousers, sweatshirts and trainers). It's full of everything a skater needs, including magazines and videos dedicated to the sport. They also do repairs, so if you've broken your board trying to do a loop-the-loop off a building, here's the place to come. The clientele tend towards the young end of the market - you'll see kids in here hassling their parents to buy them the latest in skateboarding accessories - and it's always busy. Accessories for every occasion |

Ladies, you know those little things that really pull an outfit together? Well, you'll find them all here - hence the name. This is a great place to come to dress up something already in your wardrobe with a funky belt, shawl or scarf. They keep a particularly good selection of hats - warm velvet and woollen ones during the winter season and straw sun hats in the summer. There's also a wide range of fashion jewellery, soft floaty scarves and wraps, handbags and even feather boas, all displayed in various colour co-ordinated sections. Those with long hair will love their range of sparkling hair grips, slides, bands and scrunchies. And let's not forget the all-important final touches - taken care of by their make-up and nail polish range. There is another branch at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bring a bit of Allure into your life... |
17 Regent Street Clifton Bristol United Kingdom 0117 974 3882 http://www.allure-fashions.co.uk |
"Allure is an almost magical quality; an aura or presence that charms and seduces", according to Michelle Lewis, owner of this charming ladies boutique up in Clifton. We have to agree that this is something she has a lot of, amongst the rather eclectic range of European fashion labels, with ranges by Poleci, Rutzou, Antik Batik, By Malene Birger and Libélula. Michelle wanted to bring to Bristol some of these exciting European labels that she found while living and working in London, and it was out of this that Allure was born. Whether you want advice or not, or just a relaxed friendly atmosphere in which to peruse the rails of this elegant boutique, we are sure that Michelle and Co. will help you make more of your allure. This is a golfing megastore! They are the largest golf retailers in Europe no less, stocking everything a golfer could want under one roof - equipment, clubs, clothing and accessories. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, so if you're a novice it's a good place to get kitted out, as they'll give you sound advice and can also point you in the direction of the region's best golf courses. With free parking, this really is a fantastic outlet for any golfer's needs. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Improve your mind and the world |
103 Gloucester Road Bristol BS7 8AT United Kingdom +44 117 942 2969 |
This place is worth a visit not just for its wide range of well-organised second-hand books, but also because its proceeds help support the Amnesty International campaign for globally recognised and honoured human rights, including the release of "prisoners of conscience", fair trial for political prisoners and an end to torture, "disappearances" and political executions. It's possible to find some very unusual books here, if you're willing to spend a little time looking - such as Japanese Manga translated into French! The books are organised by subject - art, cookery, health, travel, history, biography, children's etc. - and there's a particularly large selection of modern fiction, which fills an entire room at the back of the shop. Access is reasonable, although wheelchair users might find the aisles a little too narrow for ease of movement. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sleek and stylish jewellery |
9 All Saints Lane St Nicholas Market Bristol BS1 1JH United Kingdom |
This small unit, inside quaint St Nicholas Market, contains a wonderful selection of stylish, designer jewellery, most of which is actually made in the shop. You can watch the owner create pieces behind the counter. The window displays are full of bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings of gold, white gold and silver, with precious and semi-precious stones (amber, jade, moonstone and turquoise), as well as some of the less common stones (jasper and onyx). There's a particularly good selection of Art Deco-inspired items. If you don't see anything you fancy - which is highly unlikely - individual items of jewelery can be custom-made, just ask. Access to the shop involves a step, so is restricted for wheelchair users. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Planes, trains and automobiles, in miniature |
8 Fairfax Street Bristol BS1 3DB United Kingdom +44 117 927 3744 |
This store is a model-enthusiast's dream come true! It's packed with all types of model kits and ready-made replicas of various forms of transport. There's a massive selection of model vehicles, from tiny matchbox minis, through Formula One racing cars, to enormous (relatively speaking of course) shiny, remote control oil tankers. Airplanes are equally well-represented, with kits for jumbo jets to spitfires. As for trains, there's absolutely everything for model railways, from the locomotives and track right down to the tiny people for standing on the platform. All paints and brushes etc. needed to decorate your models are also for sale. They also sell historical figures and accessories - plinths for figurines and small electrical components. Everything required for the serious model maker, in fact. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sci-fi specialists |
143 Gloucester Road Bristol BS7 8BA United Kingdom +44 117 924 4655 |
Named after the infamous Area 51 in America - site of the rumored USA government alien capture cover-up - this shop specializes in comics, sci-fi books and toys and videos. Sci-fi related events are sometimes held here as well, such as a celebration of the launch of the Judge Dredd card game - which included free promotional cards, a chance to play the game, meet the designers, and talk to some guest artists. They have all kinds of collectible card games too, such as Star Wars and Babylon 5. Wheelchair users may have difficulty reaching the rear of the shop where the boxes of comics are kept. The staff are very knowledgeable - you might even go so far as to call them sci-fi nerds! But the shop is often very busy, so they may not have time to be as helpful as they'd like. Rummaging about yourself is the best bet. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Innovative arts in the heart of the harbour |
16 Narrow Quay Bristol BS1 4QA United Kingdom +44 117 929 9191 http://www.chicuk.net/bristol/... |
Housed in a large 1830s building, formerly a tea warehouse, the Arnolfini was founded in 1961 and is now an internationally-renowned arts complex. Situated on the harbour, it's made up of a cinema (showing art house and foreign-language films), visual art galleries (the only place in the city large enough to cater for major artists), a cafe-bar and a small bookshop. You can also find performance art, children's art sessions and author events going on every so often. The cafe-bar is particularly popular, attracting an arty crowd who share the communal benches with various trendies and professionals. Snacks and main meals, all with a Mediterranean flavour, are available noon-3pm and 5pm-8pm daily. It's especially wonderful in the summer when Bristolians like nothing better than to buy a pint from here and drink it on the quayside outside, legs dangling over the water. Underground Wine Cellar |
9 Culver Street West End Bristol United Kingdom http://www.averys.com |
Averys's underground cellars are so authentic you might think you are in Bordeaux rather than Bristol! The staff are exceedingly helpful, very knowledgeable and host regular courses to help you to distinguish your Chateauneuf du Pape from your Pinot Noir. In the business since 1793, Avery's has stayed true to the two main tenets-top quality, value-for-money wines and efficient, friendly service. As opposed to the high street shops filled with mass-produced brands, Averys continues to focus on small producers who share their passion for quality, character and authenticity. With John Avery (one of the most respected Masters of Wine in the country) travelling extensively to source the finest products, and a delivery direct to your door, we are confident you will be satisfied with every order or visit. Bristol's best kept wine secret |
9 Culver Street Bristol BS1 5DL United Kingdom +44 117 921 4146 http://www.averys.com |
At last - a wine cellar you can go into without feeling intimidated! Averys manages to retain an unstuffy and informal air, thanks mainly to being situated on busy Park Street, which has meant that the staff are well-used to humouring clueless punters who've wandered in for a browse! The lack of any kind of rarefied atmosphere is refreshing and they are genuinely helpful - it's tailored for those who aren't quite connoisseurs (although these can easily be accommodated here) but still like a nice glass of red or white with their supper every so often. The historic cellars (access through the shop) boast over 1,000 wines, plus port and champagnes, the majority of which are very reasonable. The sheer size of the place is slightly overwhelming, but their free information booklet helps you to know your way around. Always check their bin-end buckets - there're usually some great bargains to be found. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Browse amongst the dusty books |
4 Waterloo Street Clifton Village Bristol BS8 4BT United Kingdom +44 117 973 9848 |
Bibliophiles better beware! If they enter this shop, it's extremely unlikely they'll leave without buying something. It's the sort of second-hand book shop that you only go to if you have at least an hour to spare, as browsing through their well-stocked shelves is a real pleasure. The largest section is fiction, which ranges from the classics like Dickens and Austen, to very up-to-date novels by well-respected writers (no trashy pulp fiction here). Most paperbacks cost around £3. They also have sections on local history, poetry, academic subjects, photography and art (a particularly good outsized section on these). They also offer an out-of-print book search service. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A great day's shopping! |
St Philips Causeway Bristol BS2 0SP United Kingdom +44 (0)870 444 0654 (Tourist Information Centre) |
The Avonmead Retail Park provides both shopping and entertainment on one large, pleasantly sprawling site. The Showcase Multiplex Cinema sits beside a spacious ten-pin bowling complex, and for dining out there's TGI Friday's American restaurant, McDonalds and a Deep Pan Pizza here. Shops include a couple of large electrical stores, both usually trying to outdo the other in price cuts - it's possible to find real bargains here — Boots, and Staples the office supplier. Fashion is provided by Outfit and Brantano Footwear. There is plenty of parking space, and the Retail Park is close to the large local Sainsbury's supermarket, making this a convenient place to shop no matter what you're after. Payment methods vary by shops. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic middle-of-the-road store |
39-46 Broadmead Bristol BS1 3HB United Kingdom +44 117 929 2261 |
BHS is a bit of a British institution. You wouldn't expect to find wildly exciting and innovative stuff in here, but what you can expect are basics of high quality at reasonable prices. They have recently revamped their image somewhat with the help of various big-name designers, who have created lines of clothing or stylish home-accessories for them. So, definitely worth a look for designer-inspired gear at department store prices. It's also a good place to get kids' clothes and if you find you've run out of underwear or need a cheap swimming costume whilst you're visiting the city, you'll be spoilt for choice. They also have a range of accessories, hats and footwear. Cold drinks and snacks to takeaway can be bought on the ground floor and there is a self-service restaurant if you need some sustenance after all that shopping. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exclusively Bristolian designs for the city's young trendies |
34 Park Street Bristol BS1 5JG United Kingdom +44 117 930 4836 |
Although the trends might come from London, this store is exclusively Bristolian, making this a definite place to check out what's new around town. It's all fairly disposable stuff - you won't find highly crafted, durable garments in here, but what you will find are the latest styles at fairly cheap prices. That's why its customers are the young and pretty, typically students and teenagers. Housing three different labels under one roof, it's split over three levels, with men on the first, women on the ground, and shoes in the basement. 'Sirens' offers evening wear, casuals, shorts and logo T-shirts at fairly reasonable prices to the tune of deafening music. 'Box' is more girlie, with skirts and blouses. 'Sobeys' is for all things vintage and retro - their range of jeans and cords is massive - and finally, the shoes in the basement range from glam to chunky, with platform boots being the most popular buy. Visit this temple to all things chocolatey and you'll think you've died and gone to chocolate heaven! Owned by a local chocolatier, who supplies Fortnum and Mason in London amongst others, all the chocolates for sale are handmade locally. The range is exquisite, with flavours including burnt sugar and rum, and champagne cream truffle. There are also chocolatey cakes, which can be taken away or eaten in. You can get various coffees, teas and cold drinks here, but why would you want to when there's house white or dark hot chocolate (£1.80 small/£2.90 large). If further proof were needed that the owners are chocolate- mad, just look at the thought for the day above the counter, which reads "Gooey, chocolate, yum, good!". Review © 2007, Wcities |

This shop always has an excellent selection of beautifully restored, antique beds to choose from, with styles covering the whole spectrum—from the simplest, cast iron bedstead to a sumptuous French Lit Bateau. They also offer a wide range of handmade, cast iron beds, carefully crafted to reproduce original designs. Various sizes are available, from just 2ft (wonderfully cute children's beds) to 7ft wide. If you choose one of their unconventionally sized, antique bed frames, the shop can even supply a custom-made mattress and base. Stunning vintage, costume and fine jewellery |
3 Clifton Arcade Boyces Avenue Bristol BS8 4AA United Kingdom +44 117 973 8448 |
Visiting this shop is like entering an elaborate Aladin's cave! Recommended by Vogue, it's the place to go if you want something different from run-of-the-mill chain-store jewellery, whether it's a diamond ring or cheap trinket you're after. The owner - a wonderfully camp 40-something who'll address you as "darling" as soon as your foot is in the door - stocks costume and fine jewellery, headdresses, beaded bags, lockets, pill boxes and objets d'art from all periods, including Art Deco and especially Edwardian (look for their gorgeous chokers of all different coloured beads and stones). Above the counter is a suspended pole, completely covered with hundreds of hanging beads of all shapes, sizes and colours and lining the walls are glass cases containing glittering diamante jewellery, amber brooches and emerald necklaces etc. Definitely worth a visit, if only for the sparkly spectacle alone. Blandfords is a long-established, comprehensive stationer right in the heart of Bristol's old centre. The shop stocks everything expected of such a store, from diaries, calendars and two different sizes of Filofax stationery and accessories, through pens and pencils, files and folders, to calculators - everything you need to get your life, or at least your schedule, into order. The proprietors have managed to cram an awful lot of stock into a relatively small area without it feeling claustrophobic - it's surprising quite what you can find, or what the staff can find for you! Of particular significance is the children's section. Trained staff are on hand to measure the child's feet carefully and are more than willing to both give advice and offer assistance (and the children love their little play area!). The shoes are sturdy, very good quality and long-lasting, even with the tough treatment children dish out. It also stocks accessories - bags, gilets, socks and other footwear. This art shop has everything for artists, whether they're professionals, budding Van Goghs, complete amateurs or just kids experimenting. Accompanying these is a wide choice of papers plus traditional sketchbooks, mannequins, easels, varnishes and fixatives, not forgetting of course the many different types of paintbrushes. 15 Perry Road Bristol BS1 5BG United Kingdom +44 117 929 8765 |
Bristol has a bit of a passion for all things glass - it's in our history, you see. At one time, back in the 1700s, the city's landscape was characterised by conical glass-making kilns and the glass industry provided the city with some of its wealth. So, for a truly authentic souvenir, visit here. It's packed with exclusive, handmade stained glass and lead crystal items. There are exquisite stained-glass lampshades, which give out a gorgeous warm glow, plus tableware, mirrors, paperweights etc. Look out in particular for Bristol Blue Glass - this dark blue glass began production in the 17th century and is still made locally today at premises just 15 minutes walk away, where you can watch it being created. There's also Cranberry Exmoor Glass, Bath Aqua Glass and items from individual craftspeople. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The south west's biggest stockist of Asian foods |
78-82 St Marks Road Easton Bristol BS5 6JH United Kingdom +44 117 951 2257 http://www.sweetmart.co.uk |
This large ethnic store sells an amazing array of Asian, Middle Eastern and African foods and is the place to come for those elusive and exotic ingredients that you won't find at your local supermarket - such as spices, herbs, cooking sauces, pastes, coconut products, lentils, nuts, rice, flours, halal food, breads and oils. They also offer a wide range of Indian sweets - hence the name. It's a great place to browse as well, providing an education about food in itself — Pomegranate Molasses anyone? They now have their own web site, offering all the products in the store, packed and delivered to your home plus some great cooking ideas - look up those unfamiliar ingredients, find the recipes containing them, then go along to the store or order from the web site and try them for yourself. Lots of big-name shops, under one roof |
69 Broadmead (Office) Bristol BS1 3DX United Kingdom +44 (0)117 925 7053 http://www.bristolbroadmead.co... |
Positioned right in the middle of the Broadmead shopping area, The Galleries Shopping Centre has more than 100 shops under its roof and plenty of car parking spaces. There are big names like Boots, Waterstones, zavvi, The Gap and WHSmiths, plus a few more quirky and individual outlets. Very popular is the large cut-price clothing store TK Maxx, selling various labels for bargain prices. There's also a large food area serving various different foods (Chinese, coffee, baked potatoes etc.) on the top floor—all floors are served by lifts and escalators. It's the city centre's answer to the massive shopping mall at Cribbs Causeway - but it has to be said that the older Galleries is not only smaller, but less slick and slightly more down-market. Despite that it has got a good number of decent shops inside and is definitely worth a visit. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For all your smoking needs |
35 Baldwin Street Bristol BS1 1RG United Kingdom +44 117 927 3676 |
The shop for the dedicated tobacco-fan, Wrigley's is filled with just about every type of tobacco imaginable, both loose and as packets of cigarettes and cigars. The shop also stocks all varieties of lighter, tobacco tins and pouches, cigarette papers of various kinds, pipe cleaners, cigarette and cigar holders, pipes of all descriptions - all the accessories a smoker could require in fact. Specialist shops such as Wrigley's are now in short supply, since smoking has become less socially acceptable, which is a pity, as they constitute a small part of the history of the UK, especially in Bristol, whose wealth owes much to the tobacco trade. So, visit while you still can! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cara caters for female shoppers looking for classic, elegant and well-made shoes and clothes. Their stock takes note of the trends of the day but isn't dictated to by the latest fads. So, there's a range of boots - knee-high and ankle, in snakeskin and leather of all different colours; and shoes, such as a few Camper varieties (trendy Spanish brand), strappy sandals, work shoes, shoes to wear to a party and every day shoes of their own Cara label. They're all rather elegant and you won't find any clumsy trainers or platform heels here. Fair-traded fabrics, rugs, clothes and cushions |

Chandni Chowk stock household textiles - heavy, handmade rugs and chunky cushions - and comfortable but stylish clothes, many in Oriental and Indian designs. Everything in the shop is Fairtrade, which means it was made by people local to the area in which the products are produced, who are treated fairly and paid a fair wage for their labour. This does mean that the prices of the goods in the shop may be slightly higher than elsewhere, but the quality is excellent, and the fact that nobody has been exploited in their production seems to add an extra pleasure to their use. With almost as many awards under its belt as varieties of goods, this patisserie and delicatessen boasts entirely natural and organic treats to delight foodies everywhere. Particularly recommended is the Hobbs House bread - winner of the Organic Food Award 1998 - and the selection of organic cheeses (from £12.94 to £32 a kilogramme). There's also freshly roasted coffee, pure fruit juices, salami and hams, oils and vinegars, local handmade chocolates and a range of fantastic sandwiches - these get snapped up quickly so get there early if you're after a takeaway lunch. They have a particularly good range of Italian foods, including prosciutto, a range by Antonio Carluccio and Italian wines. They might be pricey, but everything's so tasty it's worth it. Handmade, custom-designed footwear |
68 Colston Avenue Bristol BS1 5BS United Kingdom +44 117 921 4247 |
Established back in 1977, this unique shop offers handmade, custom-fitted footwear, which can either be bought off the shelves or made-to-measure. It's this latter service that makes the shop so special - using the dimensions of your own feet, a last is made, kept at the shop, and used time and time again to make shoes that fit you perfectly. You can choose from a wide choice of colours in leather or suede, but their designs all have a slightly eco-friendly look about them, i.e. they won't be able to create a pair of stilettos for you here! They also offer a re-soling service for their own produce and can remove and stretch the uppers of their children's shoes, and replace them on a sole a full size larger, avoiding the need to buy an entirely new pair of shoes (this can only be done once). If you can't visit, try their mail order. Review © 2007, Wcities |

General bookshop especially good for children |

If you're after a hard-to-come-by reference guide, you're better off going to one of the big chains, but if you'd just like to find a good read for the weekend or some books to amuse the kids, head here. Being a neighbourhood bookshop, it's not that large, but its two floors are crammed with titles and if you can't find what you want on the shelves, a member of staff will order it especially for you. In fact, the staff are very knowledgeable and can often recommend a title if, for instance, you're looking for a present. The upper floor houses an excellent range of reading matter for children - from toddlers to teens. Downstairs there's a section devoted to travel guides and it's particularly good for modern fiction, stocking all the latest titles. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wonderful wine cellars for connoisseurs |
22 The Mall Clifton Village Bristol BS8 4DS United Kingdom +44 117 973 0287 |
Recommended by the Which Wine Guide, this independent wine merchant is one for the connoisseurs amongst you. Housed in a wonderful, old Georgian hotel (circa 1777) built by Francis Howard Greenaway, it spans five storeys, so as you can imagine, there's plenty of choice. Both red and white wine of numerous countries are represented and available for sale by the case (special offers include mixed cases of various wines from different countries) or the bottle. Bottles start at 13 pounds, and there are also many half bottles and miniatures, plus a selection of spirits. The perfect accompaniment comes in the shape of fine cigars, also on sale. Local delivery is free, as is all the wine-related advice - they really know their stuff here. Wine tasting evenings are held monthly, ask for details. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small, newly refurbished mall in trendy Clifton |
Whiteladies Road Clifton Bristol BS8 2NN United Kingdom +44 (0)117 973 2518 |
This shopping centre has undergone a complete refurbishment to the tune of £6 million and injects new vitality into the Whiteladies Road shopping area. It's student-central round here, so many of the shops cater to this end of the market - all units are either student-friendly and/or rather slick for a such a small mall. Central to the redevelopment is a new, improved Sainsbury's supermarket, car parking for 350 cars and a covered, central square with trevelators linking the mall and car park. High Street retailers—including WHSmiths, Holland & Barrett and Starbucks Coffee Company—rub shoulders with independent shops, such as Potters, which sells handmade ceramics. Worth a visit if you can't face going into town but still need a bit of retail therapy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fascinating and unique vintage clothes shop |
5 Lower Clifton Hill Clifton Bristol BS8 1BT United Kingdom +44 117 929 0644 |
Less like a second-hand clothes shop and more like a costume museum, this amazing place is well worth a visit. It's run by Gill Hodder, a woman with an encyclopedic knowledge of both where everything is in the shop (two floors, both overflowing with antique clothes on rails and boxes) and the styles and fashions of various eras. The clothes are pre-1960s and most is way before that. It's an absolute treasure trove of unique garments from Edwardian and Victorian eras and 1930s-50s. Some, however, have succumbed to the ravages of time, so watch for holes and stains before buying. You can spend hours searching through the massive cabinets, with their drawers full of buttons, stockings, silk underwear, ties, scarves and jewellery. Absolutely inspirational shopping! Smart suits for that tailored look |
59 Queens Road Clifton Bristol BS4 5HS United Kingdom +44 117 909 9948 |
If you want to look like a well-bred Englishman, head here. They stock very traditional and well-tailored suits, plus a wide range of accessories such as jackets, trousers, shirts, and ties. You won't find any "trendy" innovations like nehru collars and specially-creased shirts here - everything has the unmistakable look of conventionality, albeit that of a very high-class. So, naturally the service is of the old-fashioned and friendly variety and the assistants will talk you through the brands stocked, such as Odermark-Magee, Van Heusen etc. If you want to look really posh, they have a made-to-measure service on suits - this normally takes around six weeks but for an extra fee you can get it done in two. For the early years there is a staggering choice of soft cuddly toys, musical mobiles, fabric story books and wipe clean jungle crawl mats. For older children there are wooden railway sets, arts and crafts materials, modelling tools and electronic toys - sing-a-long radio cassette recorders, echo microphones and more. There are also sport and activity toys for outdoor play such as slides, scramble nets and swings. A great example of how shopping used to be, this popular general market has been established for 35 years and can be found these days near the big Ikea store just off the M32 at junction two. It certainly couldn't be described as glamorous shopping, but if you're after a slice of gritty English life, look no further. It's packed every week with locals looking for cheap vegetables, meat, clothes, material, music and almost anything else you could think of. The latest styles in footwear |
The Galleries 91 Broadmead Bristol BS1 3DT United Kingdom +44 117 925 3367 |
There aren't too many good shoe shops in Bristol - go up Park Street and you'll find a couple of rather expensive, highly trendy outlets, but where to go if you're after funky footwear on a budget? Faith is the answer - it fills a gap in the city for those young women (nothing for men I'm afraid) looking for shoes to wear either at work, out clubbing or to formal occasions. The styles are versions of the latest fashions and occasionally some designs can look slightly clumpy and ungainly, but there are also some very dainty little numbers, including exotic-looking, strappy sandals and sparkly mules. But, it has to be said that its biggest sellers are the wedged-heels and high-heeled boots - the kind of thing you see hundreds of young females tottering about on in the city centre come Friday night, in fact! Like them, it's cheap, overflowing with stock and staffed by youngsters who know their music: unlike them it's very large, modern and has the look and feel of a major corporation - with all the pitfalls and the benefits (being able to sell in bulk very cheaply) that this entails. It's the kind of place to come if you've always wanted to buy Blondie's greatest hits, or Bob Dylan's fourth album, but somehow never got round to it. Back-catalogue albums like this are their speciality and they cost just £5.You'll also find all the chart albums, obscure box-sets, blues, jazz, classical, reggae, hip-hop and world music - no vinyl though, just CD and tape. On the first floor they also sell a range of cult and current best seller books. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Forbidden Planet is by far the best place to visit in the search for anything to do with science fiction. They stock a wide and fascinating range of posters, action figures, model kits and books on the following - Star Wars, Star Trek, Manga, Pokémon, X-Men, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and probably every other sci-fi character that's ever existed. There are also hundreds of sci-fi comics, from the mainstream to the rare and obscure (both new and second-hand). Plus, videos, cult TV collections, books, trading cards, sci-fi and fantasy DVDs and Pikachu rucksacks, this shop has it all - and if doesn't have it in stock, it can be ordered. In short, it's a sci-fi buff's paradise. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A world of hobby games |
The Mall at Cribbs Causeway Bristol BS34 5DG United Kingdom +44 117 959 2528 http://www.games-workshop.co.uk |
Don't know if you've noticed yet, but there are rather a lot of rainy days in England. If you've been stuck inside for ages, exhausted all the museums and galleries and need something to occupy yourself with, head to this place and buy yourself a game. You'll find some traditional board games, but it's primarily about playing table-top battles and games enthusiast flock here from miles around. Players use armies consisting of painted scale models, usually about 30mm in height - first you buy the miniatures and assemble them and then paint and arrange them into their own particular regiments. There are a huge variety of troop types to choose from such as Reiksguard knights, Chaos warriors, Dragon Princes plus many more. During the week the shop hosts themed events where customers are invited to join in. Even if you hate games, call in - it's a great example of British eccentricity! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exquisite dolls and dolls' houses |
27 North View Westbury Park Bristol BS6 7PT United Kingdom +44 117 973 1850 http://www.gillianrichards.co.uk |
This is an amazing place - step inside and the world becomes miniature! The dolls' houses are stunning and range from three-storey Georgian terraces to Victorian shops, all beautifully-constructed and ready to be filled with the massive selection of mini-furniture and accessories - tiny enamel baths, through to minuscule tins of food, cutlery, and of course, tiny families. There's also a range of dolls - not the synthetic Barbie kind, but exquisite figures with porcelain heads, wearing handmade outfits. These range in size and price, but only serious collectors need apply, because such quality does not come cheap. Traditional teddy-bears also grace the shelves, including the Rolls Royce of cuddly toys and Steiff bears. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Radical bookshop specialising in alternative issues |

Situated a few minutes walk from the city centre, this shop specialises in books dealing with politics, psychology, feminism, lesbian and gay issues, environmental topics, alternative health and a wide range of so-called fringe subjects. If it's too removed from the mainstream to find in the other bookshops in town, chances are you'll get lucky in here. It also stocks a large selection of nonconformist magazines, which you won't find anywhere else in the city, including anarchist literature (these sections contain material that is particularly sought after by social scientists). Look out for their witty T-shirts and cards. They offer a mail order service and in accordance with its ethical stance, this shop is a workers' co-operative. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Comprising two floors dedicated to all genres of music, this city centre store (there are over 100 nationwide) offers a wide range of music including that from all the top pop groups as well as more obscure dance and soul tracks, and indie/rock bands. That's probably why it's usually full of youngsters after the latest single, middle-aged folk after back-catalogue albums and the occasional aesthete after an rare box-set of Bulgarian opera - it's where almost everyone comes for their aural fix. They stock CDs, cassettes, DVDs and a good selection of videos and a few 12 inch singles, although vinyl is pretty rare in here. This is a sports shop with a slightly old-fashioned feel, staffed by elderly and polite assistants. That doesn't mean their stock is equally antiquated - on the contrary, this is one of the best sports shops in the city, partly because they sell stuff that the more mainstream sports stores, which tend to concentrate on trainers and a few football shirts, don't. You'll find a wide range of tennis, squash and badminton racquets, along with a racquet restringing service, plus a large selection of swimming wear, football boots, shorts, shirts and shin pads, rugby and hockey shirts, loads of hockey sticks and aerobic clothing. If junk food is anathema to you, or if you have a particular dietary requirement (wheat-free or gluten-free for example), this small shop is the place to come. It's crammed with dried and tinned organic and natural foodstuffs, eco-friendly household and baby products, soya products, aromatherapy oils and herbal remedies, a good selection of dried herbs, organic dairy produce and very importantly—information about local, national and global conservation concerns. It also sells the best carrot cake in Bristol! The shop itself has very narrow aisles, making access practically impossible for wheelchair users, but the staff are helpful and knowledgeable, and the information on offer makes Harvest a useful resource centre for those into wholefoods and the conservation-minded.This shop has another outlet at Walcot street in Bath. Large supermarket chain |
Winterstoke Road Ashton Bristol BS3 2NS United Kingdom http://www.sainsburys.co.uk |
Strange but true - a kind of supermarket hierarchy exists in England, with ultra-posh Waitrose being at the top and Sainsbury's coming approximately second! It's all to do with branding of course, plus the number of exotic and deli-like items the stores sell, and Sainsbury's scores particularly well by this criteria. Along with all the household products, toiletries and tinned food you'd expect, there is a fresh fish counter and meat and delicatessen section, offering a range of cheeses, cold meats, bacon and sausages etc. There's also an in-store bakery and a comprehensive wine and spirits section. They are constantly expanding their organic range of foods and have in fact won awards for their selection. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is Bristol's only true designer clothes store, and is where all the city's rich, appearance-conscious folk come to dress up in expensive labels - they stock clothes by Armani, Dolce & Gabana, Versace and Firetrap, amongst others. Downstairs is the men's section, selling a large range of suits, shirts, trousers, jackets etc. and a few shoes. Upstairs is the much smaller women's section, which sells very glamorous and unique tops, skirts, dresses and trousers, plus a range of shoes and boots. Both floors only stock garments that are elegant, expensive-looking and it has to be said, slightly flashy. Expect to pay around £60 upwards for a top and around £100+ for shoes/boots. There's a certain snob value attached to John Lewis and it's regarded as quite a high-class department store. We're not talking Harrods here, but it's true that everything they sell is of top quality and there's definitely a slightly quaint and old fashioned feel to the place, look lost for just a second (not hard as the place is vast) and there will be an assistant at your side. There are four floors selling virtually everything you can think of, fashion, childrenswear, sports and leisure equipment, home furnishings, garden furniture, computers, foods and washing machines. It's perfect for locating those hard-to-find items such as buttons, designer labels for those over 40 and unique gifts. On the second floor is a licensed restaurant, you'll need to keep your strength up if you're shopping here, the range of stuff on offer can become slightly overwhelming. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This very popular toyshop is just as popular with parents as it is with children, for the simple reason that it reminds them of their own childhoods. Why? Well, remember when toys weren't instantly disposable bits of plastic, but were instead well-crafted, beautiful and thoughtful objects? That ethos is still alive in this shop today. There is a wonderful range of toys and accessories for babies and young children and the owner has selected very traditional items, mostly made from wood - games, mobiles, soft toys, blackboards and puzzles etc. There's also a small amount of child-friendly furniture and fun furnishings for kid's bedrooms and even custom-made trunks to store all those new games and toys in at the end of the day. La Senza sells a range of lingerie and nightclothes that are popular with those over-30 in particular. Perhaps this is because they are not led by fashion especially—no gravity—defying, leopard-print push-up bras here—and tend to offer quite traditional styles, with the odd surprise here and there. Whether you favour the glamorous look—ultra feminine, lace-edged bra and brief sets in stunning reds, pinks or black, or even feather boas—or prefer comfort—try the full length towelling dressing gowns with hoods and the warm pyjamas—there's something here to suit most. A really nice touch is that all purchases are tissue—wrapped in boxes containing scented beads, making them perfect presents. A big plus are the pleasant changing rooms—i.e. you get your own room! There's a wide range of shoes, boots, trainers and sandals by Dr Marten, Caterpillar, Birkenstock, Kickers and Wranglers (plus a few others) - this is footwear that is hard-wearing, kind to your feet and with a certain hippie/back-packer appeal, perfect in fact for all you travellers out there who'll be tramping round the city streets. If you can't find your size or preferred colour, the staff will order it in for you at no extra charge. There is a second branch at 52-62 Bond Street, in the Broadmead area of the city. A nostalgic view of Bristol |
St Nicholas Market, Corn Street Bristol BS1 1JQ United Kingdom |
A thoroughly delightful place for the nostalgic. The stall deals primarily in beautiful, black and white, mostly mounted photographs of old Bristol. It's fascinating to find images of the way your home or place of work used to look. Of particular interest are the photographs of St Augustine's Parade, the centre of Bristol, showing how far the dock used to extend into what is now a pedestrianised area. It also sells a selection of gift items, including Jellycat soft toys, cute and quirky animals for kids of all ages and some fine examples of Bristol Blue Glass. Memories has also, recently, started stocking items made of Bath Aqua Glass (a beautiful pale turquoise colour reminiscent of the hue of the hot springs in this historic city). Everything for the diver |
121 Mina Road St. Werburgh's Bristol BS2 9YD United Kingdom +44 117 9550 1930 http://www.mikesww.co.uk/store... |
This shop offers a huge range of diving equipment—wet and dry suits, fins, flippers, clothing, air fills etc.—everything a diver or snorkeller could want, in fact. They also hire equipment and have a servicing department, where you can make sure all your old equipment is up-to-date and totally safe. You can also order and buy from their online site. If you're a novice, take advice from the friendly, well-informed staff, including an on-site technician, who can point you in the right direction regarding courses and the best places in the area to dive. Ships' artefacts to antique pistols |
13 Lower Park Row Bristol BS1 5BN United Kingdom +44 117 929 8205 |
This place is perfect for those bored with the usual high street shops - you never know what you'll find in here. It's a genuine, dusty, "old-curiosity shop" with a military and sea-faring angle - if you've always wanted an antique ship's-lantern, then here's the place to come! They stock a wonderfully eccentric selection of antique items from old ships, such as the aforementioned lamps, wheels, brass diving helmets, portholes and even propellers. They also have items such as swords, old pocket-pistols and old-fashioned policemen's helmets. There is a particularly interesting selection of old scientific equipment, including microscopes and cameras, plus the odd piece of furniture. Well worth a look. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exotic colours and wonderful prints |
The Mall at Cribbs Causeway Bristol BS34 5DG United Kingdom |
Monsoon is known for its bohemian-chic look and the deep, rich colours and patterns that characterize their clothes - both of which hold the key to their appeal. This is a place for those who have grown out of the little-girl-in-lycra style and want something more sophisticated - expect a corresponding hike in prices. Many of the clothes have an Oriental and exotic look to them with some of the dresses styled in Chinese fashion and there are some very beautiful evening gowns in deep blue velvets, rich reds and iridescent fabrics. They also sell accessories such as hats, scarves and handbags plus kid's clothes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Catwalk fashion for the young, trendy and very skinny! |
The Mall at Cribbs Causeway Bristol BS34 5UR United Kingdom http://www.morgandetoi.com |
Colourful and chic outfits which reflect the current fashion trends are the hallmarks of this shop for young women - fringed skirts, embroidered shawls, delicate and skin-tight dresses, T-shirts, leopard prints etc. Basically, it offers a watered-down version of catwalk looks and is favoured by the city's young clubbers. This is sexy, figure-hugging stuff, with a certain high-class hooker trashy look, that's perfect for a night on the town. There are a range of accessories to compliment the clothes such as strappy shoes, mules, bags and fashionable jewellery. A word of warning - all the clothes tend to come in one size only i.e. very small and for the seriously skinny only. There is a second branch of this shop on Union Street in the Broadmead area of the city centre. Review © 2007, Wcities |

One stop shop for music |
113a Whiteladies Road Clifton Bristol BS8 2PB United Kingdom +44 117 946 7568 http://www.music-stop.co.uk |
Priding themselves on reasonable prices and excellent service, this is an independent store whose core clientele are students at the local universities - so don't go expecting a comprehensive classical composers section! It's mainly devoted to CDs although DVDs and music videos are also stocked - no vinyl though. The stock is fairly wide-ranging and includes rock, rap, hip-hop, blues, dance, reggae, drum and bass and disposable pop. They often have current chart albums at cheaper prices than many of the leading chain stores, as well as a bargain section of cut-price older albums. They also offer a variety of services such as transferring audio tape (including reels) and video to CD, and repairing broken tapes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Eclectic and interesting clothing |
13 Cotham Hill Cotham Bristol BS6 6LD United Kingdom +44 117 973 7458 |
This place is the perfect antidote to bland, monotonous, high street clothes stores and is where to come if you want to stand out from the crowd. How far you take that is up to you of course—if you really want to wander around Bristol in one of their fabulous John Travolta-style flared suits, then so be it! Otherwise, choose from their selection of silk underwear, shirts, skirts, trousers, shoes, boots etc. dating from the 1920s onwards. There's also a particularly good selection of leather and suede jackets and coats. On the more frivolous side, they also hire fancy dress costumes—lederhosen and Austin Powers outfits to name but two—and stock silly wigs, angel wings and devils' horns, for those mad nights out perhaps? Collection of antique sellers under one roof |
18 The Mall Clifton Village Bristol BS8 4DR United Kingdom +44 117 973 7843 |
Inside this beautiful old building are five different units, all selling various antiques. The range of stock they sell includes silverware (modern and antique), watches (wrist and pocket), costume and stone jewelery, porcelain, Oriental and Rajisthani art, paintings (originals and prints) and objects d'art. The stall-holders are extremely friendly and very knowledgeable about their stock, some even doing insurance valuations. If all the browsing makes you hungry, head to the upstairs balcony area, where there's a tea-room - how much more quaint can it get - selling home-made cakes, snacks, lunches and hot and cold drinks. Voted Wine Merchant of the Year, this national chain is regarded as a top-of-the-range off-licence that really knows its booze. It's especially good for wine and is brimming with a phenomenal selection - there are the classics such as the Bordeaux range of French wines, clarets and wines from the Alsace and the Loire, plus an extensive selection of Australian wines, described as the best ever assembled in the UK. There are also wines from New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, Spain and Eastern Europe and even a fine wine section for the connoisseur. Champagne, spirits, beers (including lots of unusual real ales) and soft drinks are also available. Look out for their free in-store tastings and bin-end bargains. Great place for a takeaway lunch |
1 Worrall Road Bristol BS8 2UF United Kingdom +44 117 946 6940 |
This was once a specialist cheese shop, but is now the place to go for a truly great takeaway lunch. The basic sandwich menu includes gammon, roast chicken and avocado, prawn, Parma ham, brie and oak-smoked salmon. The deli section is where you can find Thai and Italian delicacies, cakes and salads. You can also create your sandwich to your own specifications. No microwaves or processed food items are used and everything is cooked and/or prepared on the premises. Hot and cold drinks, such as juices and Illy coffee (said to be the best) are also sold. It gets very busy at lunchtimes, when you might have to queue - always a good sign. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Well, if you want to make sure your young ones don't clash with your outfit and are the coolest in the playground, bring them here to get kitted out. Being in Clifton Village (home to the city's wealthy), this shop naturally only stocks designer label children's clothes. Starting at age nought and going up to age 12, they sell babygrows, coats, shoes, various accessories and everyday wear for kids. Nothing is particularly dressy, just very well-designed, trendy and correspondingly expensive. Outfit is an outlet for some prestigious names in the fashion world, amongst them Wallis and Warehouse (for women) and Lee and Wrangler (for men). The store is spacious, comfortable and shopping here is a real pleasure - a world away from the hassle of the high street. The prices tend to reflect the labels (this isn't the cheapest place to shop) but the quality is high, and it is possible to find some real bargains if you visit at the right time. It's nice to find clothes in colours other than what the designers have decreed are "in" this season, too! Well worth visiting - and re-visiting. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Unisex Hairdresser |
16 Park St Bristol BS1 5HR United Kingdom |
Paul Stein Hairdressing is in fact owned by Paul Ashdown, "Stein" being his Norwegian second Christian name. Paul trained as an apprentice here and has been hairdressing and managing salons in Bristol for the past 21years. He took over the running of the salon as owner in 1989. This is a modern, relaxing environment staffed by an experienced team who demonstrate a relaxed but professional attitude. We must admit we are those type of people who quite literally fear the visit to the hairdressers – however, the only decent haircut one of our team has had in 9 years (we kid you not!) was at the hands of Paul himself. And it was not just the end product that satisfied, for the chat with Paul and his listening carefully to what was required meant that our friend enjoyed the whole experience immensely! This team has the knowledge and expertise to make a difference, designing on a personnel level. And trust us, these styles make an impact. Review © 2007, Wcities |

102 Whiteladies Road Clifton Bristol BS8 2QY United Kingdom +44 117 923 8277 |
This shop, full of color and interest, specializes in the most adorable teddy bears of various different shapes and sizes. Not surprisingly, it's very popular with kids, who tend to drag their parents here on weekends. It's also popular however, with serious collectors, as it stocks distinctive and high-quality bears from Dean's, Britain's oldest teddy bear manufacturer - the company was established at the turn of the last century. Dean's catalog's can also be obtained from the shop, so if you can't afford to buy right now, you can order from home. Also available here is everything you'd need for patchwork, embroidery and quilting, including fabric, silks, books and accessories - it's that kind of shop: quaint, old-fashioned and harking back to a more gentle age. Anyone looking for a second-hand leather jacket should make their way here first. RePsycho has racks of them, alongside suede, cord and denim ones, all exuding 60's and 70's groovy chic. Lots of them are imported from America and Europe, so you know you're getting one-offs and won't bump into anyone else wearing the same thing in Bristol. Rummage through the overflowing shelves and rails and you'll also find jeans, some amazingly psychedelic dresses, shirts and skirts, as well as accessories, old telephones and some jewelery - all kitsch, funky and lots of fun. Mediterranean delicacies to delight |
40-42 Glass Arcade St Nicholas Market Bristol BS1 1LJ United Kingdom +44 117 909 9587 |
A very big favourite with Bristolians, this stall is piled high with large wooden barrels, all full of different kinds of olives - black, green, Kalamata, stuffed, plain or smothered in herbs and garlic. They also sell delicious home-made pesto and harissa sauces, feta cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, dolmades, couscous, artichoke hearts, pimientos and hummous. Buy to take home, or go for their bargain lunch offer - three items from the above, with granary bread or ciabatta. There's no seating, but a couple of minutes away is a quiet cobbled street called Welshback, where you can sit at the riverside wooden benches opposite Bar Med and watch the river traffic go by - usually a swan or two - as you enjoy a Mediterranean lunch, Bristol-style. Breathe in and get fitted for a corset! |
180c Cheltenham Road Bristol BS6 5RB United Kingdom +44 117 924 7177 |
Do you know anyone who would love a handmade, tailored corset? Well, here's the place to come. It's less of a shop, more of a workshop, selling corsets designed specifically to the customer's request - so if you want one covered in sequins or in black satin with pink bows, that's fine - and a few off-the-peg. They are beautifully made and many brides wear the more demure ones as part of their wedding outfit. The feel of the shop - large mirrors, tailors' dummies, staff wandering about draped in bits of material and with pins between their teeth - is wonderfully old-fashioned, but the corsets are not and you may see their designs on the city's hippest clubbers if you look carefully. A word of warning though - if you decide to buy one, just make sure you'll have someone to lace you into it! Review © 2007, Wcities |

It specialises in non-fiction, in particular official documents relating acts of parliament. Not especially exciting, but don't write it off just yet - it also offers a good range of Ordnance Survey maps, business titles, teacher's curriculum documents, guide books (including geology) and a very good local history section - so head here if you want to learn more about Bristol's past. This rather grand station was built in 1841 and designed by Brunel (who also designed the Clifton Suspension Bridge and SS Great Britain). It's ten minutes walk from the city center and is served by numerous buses. From here you can catch a train that will take you either directly or via connections, to any other station in the country, as well as many of Bristol's neighbourhood stops. Inside the station there are a couple of coffee vendors, some food outlets, a newsagent, phones, toilets, cash points and bus and taxi ranks. The ticket office is open 5am-9.30pm Mon-Fri and 6.45am-9.30pm Sat-Sun for immediate travel and there's also an office for European train travel and advance bookings, as well as two enquiry points. Queues often form at all of these, so allow yourself at least fifteen minutes prior to travel to ensure you get your ticket in time. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vintage American clothing |
54 Park Street Bristol BS1 5JN United Kingdom |
Isn't it great how we take what are effectively American reject garments and make them look cool! Every item of vintage clothing in this funky shop, is imported from the United States and because they are generally unique and already aged, it's very popular with the city's 20-40-somethings who want to look a bit different from the crowd. If you're after vintage jeans, it's definitely the place to come - they've got loads, including Levi's and some wild flares, plus cords in all different colours and some very wacky checked slacks. When winter kicks in, it's a great place to find suede or leather jackets of all different styles, shapes and colours, plus a great selection of coats, many sheepskin - perfect for people wanting to look cool (or should that be warm!) on a budget. Last, but not least, there are bowling shirts, patterned shirts, skirts and dresses for the American pie look. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Trendy streetwear for men |
The Galleries Broadmead Bristol BS1 3XD United Kingdom +44 117 927 6002 |
If you're looking for something to wear which is smart but not boring, trendy but not faddish and definitely slightly different from the norm, look no further. Catering mainly for the 18-45 age group, this shop stocks a great range of shirts, jackets, coats, casual tops, jumpers and all different types of jeans. Don't expect any bright colours, everything here is black, grey or dark blue without exception, but do expect high quality and correspondingly high prices. Labels stocked include the super-hip Diesel and Replay, plus the erstwhile upper-class and traditional but now painfully-trendy Thomas Burberry. They also sell record bags - the final touch for the modern man-about-town! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Unusual and vivid home decorations, and crazy clocks |
The Top House, Christmas Steps Bristol BS1 5BS United Kingdom |
This small shop is filled with wonderfully eccentric and quirky items. Veron Ikon sells original clocks, lamps, mirrors and plaques in vibrant colours and unusual shapes - sunburst and starburst clocks, lamps that look like extraterrestrial plants and an almost mansized mirror, triangular but standing on its point and with a mosaic edging of small vivid blue and green glass squares, positively glow against the sombre paintwork of the walls. It's probably safe to say that as well as being a talking point in your home, it's extremely unlikely you'll ever see anything like your purchase in anyone else's!. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tight, clingy fashion for women |
The Mall at Cribbs Causeway Bristol BS34 5UR United Kingdom +44 117 950 9753 |
Before you venture in here, there's something you should know. These clothes are tailored for young and extremely skinny women. If you're over a size 14, forget it! What does that tell you about the kind of stock here? Well, it's made for women who aren't afraid to flaunt what they've got and the predominant style is skin-tight and clingy. Lycra is the order of the day. There are lots of sexy dresses, floaty skirts and soft mohair woollens, plus more casual tops and trousers, all with a slightly clubby feel. These are trendy clothes which exude femininity and there's a definite unique and distinctive look to them, making them perfect for the young women who flock here looking for a night-on-the-town outfit. News, stationery and books |
Unit 49 Lower Level Bristol BS34 5GG United Kingdom +44 117 950 9525 http://www.whsmith.co.uk |
You can get newspapers from almost anywhere these days—supermarkets, corner shops and kiosks etc.—but for foreign language papers and the more obscure end of the magazine market, you'd best head here. If you've been searching in vain for that "Yachting Monthly" for example, search no more—almost every publication currently in print is kept in stock. Other reasons you may find it useful to visit the place include its range of books, cards, stationery and music, plus a selection of A-Z maps of the city and atlases and maps of further afield. There is also quite a comprehensive range of art materials and office products. Being such a well-established chain, you'll find other branches city-wide—there is a particularly large branch at The Galleries Shopping Centre) in the city center. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For a taste of the Orient |
4 Station Road Montpelier Bristol BS6 5EE United Kingdom +44 117 942 8509 |
There are certain exotic ingredients, generally not to be found on supermarket shelves, that transform an average Chinese meal into the real thing. To find them, head for this fascinating Oriental store - here's where you can lay your hands on all manner of sauces, including many varieties of soy; frozen prawns and shrimp; stir-fry fresh vegetables; lime leaves; fresh and dried spices; tofu; Chinese wines and spirits and best of all, every unusual and quite frankly mystifying foodstuff that you've always wanted to try but aren't quite sure what to do with! There's also a good selection of cooking utensils such as woks, steamers etc. in which to prepare your feast. A lot of the stock is sold in large sizes and bulk, as they supply the city's restaurants, but non-trade customers are equally welcome. They also act as representatives for Eupo Air and Sagitta Travel Agencies, specialising in flights to Hong Kong. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Well-loved and well-stocked bookshop |
The Galleries Bristol BS1 3XD United Kingdom http://www.waterstones.co.uk |
Bristol's book-lovers really rate this place, partly because it holds such a vast stock and they can usually find what they want without having to order, but also for its air of quiet gentility and learnedness. Part of a national chain, it's a general store but with an educated slant and covers almost every subject you could think of - modern fiction, classics, travel, art, cookery, history, sociology, education, children's, travel etc. The staff are clearly book-worms as well and if you do need something not on the shelves, they'll order it for you, which takes 10-14 days. This particular store hosts many author events, as do most Waterstones around the country, being very highly regarded in the publishing world. There are two other branches - one at College Green and the other at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located on perhaps the prettiest and certainly the most quaint shopping street in the city, the steep Christmas Steps, West Region Stamps is a lofty and surprisingly spacious shop, stocked with a comprehensive selection of stamps for everyone from the souvenir hunter to the serious collector. A particular feature of the goods on offer are complete sets of stamps, from both the UK and around the world - and the front sports a very colourful window display! First day covers are also available, and the staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Perfect both for the philatelists and the merely curious amongst you. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sole health-food shop south of the river |
85 Queen's Road Bristol BS8 1QS United Kingdom +44 117 910 5930 http://www.wholefoods.com/ |
A blessing to vegetarians and healthy-eaters living in Bristol, this place stocks all the usual pulses and lentils etc. and a good line in veggie bacon, sausages and burgers. It also stocks a lot of tempeh and tofu products, organic cheeses and milks, soya milks, herbal teas, spices and herbs, snacks, nuts, even soya ice-cream. There's also delicious organic bread for sale, but you have to get there early in the day as it sells out quickly. If you're into touchy-feely "alternative" health issues, you'll find their noticeboard useful. It's a good source for information about the local yoga classes, massage and reflexology practitioners, accommodation for rent etc. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sow the seeds of organic change |
9-11 Lower Redland Road Redland Bristol BS6 6TB United Kingdom +44 117 973 1967 http://www.woats.co.uk/ |
This is possibly the best healthfood shop in the city, selling everything for those who want to eat and live better. Buy your food from here and you can rest assured that it won't be full of nasties - the shop is currently 90 per cent GM-free and mostly organic. They sell all the usual meat substitute products like veggie burgers, sausages, quorn mince etc. plus vegetarian cheese, yoghurt, milks, tofu and tempeh. Its selection of freshly-baked breads of all different kinds is extremely popular and the self-serve scoop section is also a big hit - you help yourself to big tubs full of rices, pulses, flours, nuts and grains, then take them to the counter to be weighed. For a healthy lunch have one of their takeaway salads or soups - freshly made each day and all absolutely delicious. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Designer clothes for the dudes |
30 Park Street Bristol BS1 5JA United Kingdom +44 117 903 0942 |
Exclusively catering for men, this trendy outlet attempts to house all the big names in designer wear under one rather small roof and attracts Bristol's label-junkies. Whether you like to dress to impress in Prada, Versace, Boss, Cerruti, Moschino, Gallagher, La Coste, Henry Lloyd or any of the other big names then this is the best place, next to London that is, to come. But naturally, these names come with a price - a rather hefty one at that - so only the more affluent of the male population need enter in. Review © 2007, Wcities |
