Accommodation in Brussels is of a very high standard and mostly not inexpensive. There are, however, a number of places where you can find a good value room, but remember to take into account the fact the Brussels is an elite city.

Hotels

This international destination has more good hotels than most world cities. You'll find everything here from an inexpensive room at a hotel such as Hotel Galia to an executive five-star hotel like the Amigo Hotel or Astoria Hotel where you can enjoy all the hotel's facilities or just relax with an exquisitely served breakfast. What could be better?

Finding a room shouldn't be a problem in Europe's diplomatic and commercial heart. There is an abundance of rooms as Brussels is often the host city to international conferences. At these times surplus rooms are needed, so it is perhaps a good idea to book your accommodation as soon as your know your dates for travelling, though if you are taking a trip at short notice you shouldn't worry, as there is generally a room to find somewhere in the city.

Most hotels here are child-friendly, and many offer services such as a children's club and babysitting. There are also many places where your dog is welcome. If you are coming from abroad, don't forget your pet passport, and the conditions for re-entry.

The price of breakfast is normally, though not always, included in the hotel costs. Breakfast in Belgium is generally of the continental kind, consisting of coffee or tea, juice, bread with an assortment of different fillings and spreads such as cheese, cold meats, and sometimes a boiled egg. European hotels seldom offer a traditional English breakfast but the traditional local breakfast is well worth trying. Coffee is mostly filtered and served in small cups with whipped cream or coffee cream. Tea comes in all flavours, so if you prefer it the English way, just ask for unflavoured tea with a small jug of fresh milk, as tea is traditionally drunk black in Europe.

Hostels

If all these chic hotels are not for you, then perhaps you would find one of the youth hostels more attractive. There are two above-average hostels in Brussels, Auberge de Jeunesse Jacques Brel (120 beds) and Brueghel-IYHF (100 beds). Both offer inexpensive restaurants and more facilities than average.

The Airport

For overseas visitors it's perhaps handy to stay in the area close to the airport. Hotels such as Holiday Inn and Novotel are, amongst others, very popular with both leisure and business travellers. The airport is just 20 minutes from Central Station.

Flemish television stations broadcast movies and overseas programs in the original language with subtitles and the BBC is available almost everywhere. English newspapers are available at most newsstands as are women's magazines and business periodicals such as ‘Time' and ‘The Bulletin'.

In short Brussels is unique, has a great atmosphere, is very friendly towards foreign visitors and most of the people speak at least a little English. Brussels' enormous amount of hotels are amongst the world's best. Although Brussels is a traditional city, it has not dragged its heels in the progress department. It's continually busy with updating and modernising, that's why you'll never find a building or government establishment that isn't well maintained. Enjoy your stay!

Hotel Galia

Friendly hotel in a very friendly neighbourhood
15-16 Place du Jeu de Balle
Brussels 1000
Belgium

Situated on Place du Jeu de Balle, backdrop to a great daily marché aux puces (fleamarket), this is a friendly hotel in a very friendly neighbourhood - Les Marolles, the genuine heart of old Brussels. And as this city is not particularly big, you sleep within easy walking distance Grote Markt / Grand Place. The chances of meeting a genuine ketje here, however, are slightly greater than on Grand Place.
