Bank

Was bank; now bar
79 Rue de Bailli, 79
Brussels 1050
Belgium
+32 (0)2 537 5265
http://www.thebank.be/
This Irish pub is housed in a converted bank that still has safe deposit boxes lining the walls, hence the name. It's also not far from Avenue Louise and it is located in an area where there are not too many pubs of its kind. Unlike many Irish pubs in Brussels, it is not full of folks wanting to watch sporting events. The atmosphere is casual and filled with locals of all nationalities. Saturday nights can be crowded when live Irish music or otherwise popular music selections are played.

Brasseries Georges

A little bit of Paris in Brussels
259 Avenue Winston Churchill
Brussels 1180
Belgium
+32 (0)2 347 2100
http://www.brasseriesgeorges.be/
You'll find this typical Parisian brasserie next to Bois de la Cambre. Smart waiters welcome you at the entrance right next to a wonderful display of fresh fish, shellfish, lobsters and other sea treasures. You can take out your plateau de fruits de mer for - why not? A chic picnic in the woods. The ambiance of the restaurant is cosy, relaxing and friendly, and you can rub shoulders with the local beau monde. Prices aren't very low, but it's good value.

Great cold buffet lunches

http://conradhotels1.hilton.co...
In Brussels' expensive shopping neighborhood, you'll find a very charming brasserie where the atmosphere is elegant but unpretentious. Perhaps one of Brussels' best-kept secrets is this hotel restaurant's all-you-can-eat cold lunch buffet. It features poached and smoked salmon, mozzarella and tomatoes, couscous and other cold favorites, including vegetables and salads. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings it's Pastamania time, where you can eat all you like from the pasta selection. On Sundays there is an extensive lunch menu, which includes a glass of wine or champagne.

Canterbury

Traditional cuisine with a capital T
2 Avenue de l'Hippodrome
Brussels 1050
Belgium
+32 (0)2 646 8393
In this gorgeous part of town, close to Les Etangs d'Ixelles (The Lakes of Ixelles), which are surrounded by truly magnificent Jugendstil-mansions, is this agreeable young brasserie, which specializes in traditional cuisine. Classics like filet Américain (raw minced beef, prepared at your table), Gentse waterzooi (creamy chicken stew) and Vol-au-vent (another chicken speciality) are really state-of-the-art. The restaurant is run by the Niels family. Founding father Joseph is said to have 'invented' filet Américain in the 20's. Tasting it here, you will gladly believe that claim. The business is child-friendly; there is a special children's library on the premises.

This great Southern-French restaurant opened 35 years ago, and little has changed since. The interior is cozy and stylish, the menu a register of the classics of Provençal cuisine, from salade niçoise to bouillabaisse. There is a great terrace offering a perfect view of the fashionable Place du Sablon.

Fellini

Italian dining in an old train station
Place du Châtelain 34
Brussels 1050
Belgium
+32 2 534 4749
The interior fascinates, resembling an old train station, with its wooden seats, metal pillars and a beautiful trompe l'oeil on the walls. You can almost imagine you're staring in one of Fellini's film! This restaurant serves fine Italian food; there are seven pasta dishes, always freshly prepared, and of course you can't leave without having tasted the osso bucco. Every day brings a new menu; either choose à la carte, or allow the chef to suggest his best.

James Joyce Irish Pub

34 Rue Archimede
Brussels 1000
Belgium
+32 (0)2 230 9894

Opened in May 1989, this former Pakistani restaurant became the first Irish pub in Brussels. Due to its popularity, many others followed suit. Today there are about 18 Irish pubs in the city. The James Joyce is a cosy wateringhole and during summer, those preferring fresh air are welcome to take their place in the back garden. Guinness is a popular favourite here, of course. The lunchtime menu includes Irish stew and smoked salmon.

Khaima

Authentic Moroccan cuisine
1390 Chaussée de Wavre
Brussels 1160
Belgium
+32 (0)2 675 0004
http://www.lakhaima.be/
It is hard to imagine that you are still in Brussels once you enter this authentic Moroccan restaurant. The walls, ceiling and floor are all draped in Moroccan carpets. The staff is dressed in authentic clothes, and the tables are made of large round copper trays. The only items not found in a Nomad's tent may be the wicker chairs and the cushioned benches. Of course the food is as inviting as the interior, with a wide selection of delicious tajines and couscous. Yum!

http://www.kittyosheas.com/kit...
The second Irish pub to open in Brussels (in early 1990), is just a few hundred metres from James Joyce, the very first one. Kitty's is very popular with Eurocrats and journalists. It is also a bit quieter than some of the other pubs in the same area. Live music on Wednesday evenings makes for a lively atmosphere. At the back of the cozy restaurant, the owners serve traditional Irish fare. The kitchen is closed on Saturdays but open Sunday lunchtimes.

Malte

Romantic atmosphere in antique surroundings
30 Rue Berckmans
Brussels 1060
Belgium
+32 (0)2 539 1015
Antique furnishings, old chandeliers, a pair of statues and a striking baker's cabinet lend to the quaint and cozy atmosphere of this restaurant, located in an early 19th century house at the edge of the Forêt des Soignes. The Franco-Belgian menu is top quality. The service, like the atmosphere, is friendly, relaxed and definitely unpretentious. At midday this is a great stop-off for a cup of coffee and a tasty tart.

The décor is simple and pleasant and this restaurant has been around for a few years. Most evenings the place is full. The side dishes, such as aubergine-dip, are great and the Greek salad is wonderful. The décor is simple and works well for the crowd. Dogs are often spotted under diners' tables. The menu features delicious burritos, quesadilla, enchiladas and salads. It is probably the place in town for tequila and Margaritas. Mexican beer can also be found here. There is a bar area where you can also eat.

Pain Quotidien

A slice of country life
11 Rue des Sablons 11
Brussels 1000
Belgium
+32 (0)2 513 5154
http://www.painquotidien.com/
It's found in Paris and New York, but this internationally renowned bakery is a Belgian invention, and many folks admit that this is still the best bread in the city. In truth, it's not just a bakery, but also a patisserie, delicatessen, snack bar and coffee house. Their farmers' bread is still baked by artisans. This shop (as well as its 10 other Brussels locations) has a provincial atmosphere, decorated with pine furniture and cream-coloured walls. The menu includes a selection of open sandwiches (try the typical cheese platter with radish and onions), salads and tarts.

Passage to India

Rice, spice and more
Chaussee de Louvain 223
Brussels 1210
Belgium
+32 (0)2 735 3147
http://www.passage2india.be
The exquisite oil lamps and the enticing aroma wouldn't let you ignore this place. Famous for their cooked to perfection curries and biryanis, Passage to India is one of the few Indian restaurants that serves scampi and beef. Try the well-marinated tikka kebab or chicken chaat for starters or even the innovative mutton samosa. Pick from dhansak, pasanda, vindaloo, rogen josh and madras curries, depending on the degree of spice you savor. Your meal is incomplete here without having a go at the biryani, which is an authentically flavored combination of rice and meat. All this at a price which doesn't weigh you down. They also offer the take-away and home delivery option.

Salons de l'Atalaide

Impressive decor
89 Chaussée de Charleroi 89
Brussels 1060
Belgium
+32 (0)2 534 6456
http://www.lessalonsatalaide.be/
This restaurant is situated in the original baroque-style banqueting rooms of a former hotel. Bombastic and imposing are words that come to mind; it is definitely worth a visit, even if you just want to walk in and look around: you will walk out with your mouth open and a surprised look on your face. The food is of a very high standard and not overpriced, surprising from a restaurant with this kind of décor. In the afternoon it turns into a tea room.
