Central, affordable one-star hotel |
Madach Imre utca, 3 District VII Budapest 1075 Hungary +36 1 391 4258 |
If you want to be in the very heart of the city, then this may well be the place for you. It is only a small hotel (thirteen rooms) but the location is amazing. All the Metro lines are close by so it is possible to get virtually anywhere in Budapest in minutes. Book well ahead for a room as it often gets very busy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Private rooms near the centre |
Mester utca, 3 District IX Budapest 1095 Hungary +36 1 275 9136 |
Located in the ninth district, this apartment house hotel is a short eight-minute Metro ride from the centre (M3 line). It offers six rooms with a range of facilities, including parking and a sports and fitness room. The location is a good one, and allows for some interesting walks in the immediate vicinity. As is the case with any hotels on the Metro line, it is worth getting off the train one or two stops from the center, as there you will find some of the more interesting and less commercial/tourist streets. Located below Castle Hill |
Apor Peter utca, 3 District I Budapest 1011 Hungary +36 1 224 0999 |
This is a rather anonymous and unpretentious hotel set in a small side street below Castle Hill. The rooms are fairly small but all contain a mini-bar and TV. The location is excellent, allowing for easy access to the chain bridge with its stunning views of the Danube. It's also a short (but steep) climb to the Castle District itself. Please note that credit cards are not accepted here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Brand new art hotel |
Bem Rakpart, 16-19 Budapest 1011 Hungary +36 1 487 9487 http://www.artotel.hu |
'Art hotels' are all the rage in Europe, each dedicated to the art and design of a single artist, and in the case of Budapest it's the work of American artist Donald Sultan. The hotel's location is excellent: in the city's heart, on the Buda side of the river. Everything from the carpets to the wall designs, actual paintings and more are by Mr. Sultan. The result is an interesting and comfortable marriage of hotel and museum, but a museum where even the walls and floors are artistic creations. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Kossuth Lajos utca, 19-21 District V Budapest 1053 Hungary +36 1 889 6000 http://www.danubiusgroup.com/a... |
Situated on a busy road junction in downtown Pest, this hotel - with its ornate marble and gilt furnishings - is the epitome of early twentieth-century style. It is a tad run down, but makes a pleasant change from the often anonymous international hotel chains. The restaurant and café are very pleasant and suitably ornate. This is a Budapest classic, and a part of the city's history. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small family-run guesthouse |
Wesselenyi utca, 87 District XX Budapest 1201 Hungary +36 1 284 2887 http://baipanzio.freeweb.hu |
This guesthouse is located outside the city centre but access to downtown is not too complicated. Connections are quick and easy if you take the Green Hev train, which will have you near the centre in around twelve minutes. Parking facilities are available, dogs are welcomed and room service is offered. There are only six rooms, so the atmosphere is intimate and friendly. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Situated near the embassies |
Benczur utca, 35 District VI Budapest 1068 Hungary +36 1 342 7970 |
This hotel is situated along the quiet street known as 'Embassy Row' near Hosok tere (Heroes' Square) and City Park. It shares a building and reception desk with Hotel Pedagogous, which is around 10% cheaper. The location is a good one, as it is on a subway and bus line. Many major sights are within a five-minute walk, including two museums, a large park, the zoo, and some great restaurants and cafés. The surrounding area is made up of beautiful decaying mansions, some of which have undergone renovation as well as others which apparently have not been touched in several years. On the highway from Vienna |
Budaorsi ut, 88-90 District XI Budapest 1112 Hungary +36 1 310 2999 |
This hotel catches your attention if you are driving into the city from the main Vienna highway as it has a large sign, advertising its room rates. It may be just what you are looking for, especially if you don't want to face trying to drive into the congested center. The rooms are large and comfortable, decorated in modern colors, with new furniture. The location is close enough to the center (half an hour by public transport), and also allows for easy, traffic-free morning departures out of town. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located near Moskva Square |
Csalogany utca, 23 District II Budapest 1027 Hungary +36 1 201 6333 |
This hotel presumably takes its name from its proximity to Moszkva ter (Moscow Square), which is now a real centre of activity in Buda. It is close to the metro and a major shopping mall (Mammut) as well as several fast food restaurants and 24-hour shops. The location is a good one for heading to the Pest side (three stops on the metro) as well as for taking trips into the lovely Buda Hills. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This hotel is situated outside the city center, but is convenient for the famous Petofi Institute. Unusually, the hotel is shaped like a cylinder. Its' unique shape makes it a clearly visible landmark from any elevated point in the city. It is best to get a room on the upper floors from where you'll get a good view. The rooms are all quite spacious even if they are shaped like slices of cake. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Taken over by the Marriott chain in 1992 and renovated room by room, this hotel has been completely revamped with the exception of the monolithic, Stalinist architecture of the exterior. Most of the rooms have a small balcony overlooking the river and are comfortably and well furnished. The Sunday all-you-can-eat brunch is very popular with ex-pats. The hotel also has a large and well-situated fitness center with windows overlooking the Danube. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Királyok útja 261 District III Budapest 1039 Hungary +36 1 387 9329 |
If you're looking for a unique Budapest hotel experience, then you won't go wrong with the Dunapart. It is in fact a permanently moored boat on the Danube, almost directly across from the parliament buildings. The rooms are the actual ship's cabins, with the same style of beds and the same rather confined space. It is definitely worth a look. The boat is within an easy walk of many sights and of course the Danube is right outside the window... Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small inexpensive guest house |
Haros utca, 125 District XXII Budapest 1222 Hungary +36 1 226 7309 |
The twenty-second district is a little out of the way, but it is quiet and has good access to the center via public transit. This guest house has ten rooms, and offers a range of services, including a bureau de change. Parking facilities are also available. The main advantage to staying here is the fact that it is surrounded by relatively empty green areas. These are slowly vanishing, but some of them are being preserved, and they offer clean air, birds, nature and peace and quiet. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fancy new coffee house |
Szent Istvan korut, 9-11 District V Budapest 1055 Hungary +36 1 312 2362 |
The Europa now occupies the premises used until only recently by a wonderful old cukraszda (café and coffee shop) called Sziget. Although this new coffee house tries its best, it has a hard time recreating the atmosphere of the old place. This coffee house is so bright even poseurs would be excused for wearing shades indoors. It has a slippery marble floor that is continually being swept by young girls. The place is done out in brown wood and olive green recalling a Viennese konditorei. There is also a balcony high above where men in suits sit and from where you can hear Hungarian pop singers wail loudly over the stereo. A cup of Viennese coffee comes with a traditional glass of water and delicious whipped cream and costs 270 ft. Many pensioners still sit around occupying their ex-local, with only a glass of water on the table in front of them. On their pension, they can make it last an hour. The head patissier and café boss Barnabas Ziniel certainly makes some delicious looking cakes including Tiramisu and Black Forest gateau. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This apartment-only hotel is up in the hills and therefore offers terrific views over the city. All apartments are self-catering and contain kitchens, which is both convenient and cost-saving. The location is a good one: the center can be reached in less than half an hour by public transport. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Inexpensive hotel in Buda hills |
Beethoven utca, 7-9 District XII Budapest 1126 Hungary +36 1 375 3082 |
The Buda hills are green and leafy, and this small one-star hotel rests mid-way up them in the twelfth district. Transport to the center is easiest by tram. This is an excellent location if you are interested in exploring the hills. The cog-wheel railway is within easy access, and you may just discover that one of the main charms of Budapest is in fact these very hills. Many of the homes in the area could be described as palatial, with sweeping panoramic views down over the Danube, Gellert Hill, the Parliament and more. A huge bonus is that the air is noticeably fresher up here, and birds can be heard singing at all hours. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Szent Gellert ter, 1 (District XI) Budapest 1111 Hungary +36 1 889 5501 http://www.danubiushotels.com |
Built between 1912 and 1918, this Art Nouveau spa hotel was destroyed in World War II, then rebuilt in the original style and modernized. The hotel's domed towers and baths give it an oriental flavor. There are baths, plunge pools, a sauna, massage centre, wave pool (built in 1927), a hot pool with medicinal spa water, as well as a sun terrace. An institute of water therapy also operates on the premises. The hotel has a delightful open-air restaurant terrace, which offers great views. There are four more cafés and restaurants to choose from inside. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located next to the Keleti station, this hotel is convenient but can be noisy. Rooms either have a shared bathroom and shower down the hall, or for a little more you can get a private shower. Located at the top of Rakoczi ut, next to the Keleti (Eastern) rail station, this is a big hotel (it claims to be the biggest in Hungary) with fairly unimpressive architectural features. The service is efficient and the rooms are acceptable - just pray that you don't get one at the end of one of the half-mile long corridors. There are also some 'junior suites', which have recently been refurbished. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Amazing views over the city |
Hess Andras ter, 1-3 Budapest 1014 Hungary +36 1 889 6600 http://www.budapest.hilton.com/ |
Built in 1976 around the ruins of a thirteenth-century Dominican monastery (the cloisters of which you can still walk around), this hotel offers amazing views over the Danube to Pest (for an extra HUF9,309). However, it should be noted that if your business is in Pest, the journey can be tedious during the rush-hour. The hotel's successful integration into the old ruins won it an architectural award, although today it may be considered a slightly intrusive addition to the Castle District skyline. Nyar utca, 6 District VII Budapest 1072 Hungary +36 1 413 2555 http://www.marcopolohostel.com/ |
This hostel is excellent. Even the dorm rooms are comfortable and relatively private (they are divided by small walls and curtains). Singles, doubles, triples and quads are also available. The standard here is much higher than in most hostels; in fact, it's even higher than that in many budget hotels. Budget hotel with a view |
Citadella setany Budapest 1118 Hungary +36 1 466 5794 http://www.citadella.hu/ |
This budget hotel offers some of the most spectacular views in the city as it is perched at the very top of Gellert Hill, inside the historic Citadella. To get there, you could either walk through the park from the Elizabeth bridge or take a bus (27) that goes almost all the way. For a location like this with magnificent views, you would expect to pay a fortune, but the Citadella is one of Budapest's best bargains. It's not luxurious, but it is certainly very memorable. There are private rooms as well as dorm beds, which are extremely cheap. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This three-star hotel is located in the eighth district. It offers the usual Eravis chain features such as satellite TV and mini-bar, but at a more attractive price than most of its competitors. It is a short tram ride to the city centre and other attractions. While you may have heard that the eighth district has a dubious reputation, it is constantly being gentrified, and is now a much more respectable (and affordable) part of the city. There are some very interesting small neighborhoods around the hotel, including places that in the past would have been considered separate villages on the outskirts of Budapest. Beautiful setting |
Szentharomsag ter, 6 (District I) Budapest 1014 Hungary +36 1 355 0122 |
The Kulturinnov hotel is a gem, which goes pretty much unnoticed by passersby, namely because it's located inside the Hungarian Culture Foundation. The hotel is small, with only sixteen rooms, and is often fully booked well ahead of time by those "in the know". The building in which it's housed is truly beautiful and well worth a look, even if you are not staying at the hotel. The combination of a Castle Hill location and an incredible building is a winning one. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located beside Heroes' Square |
Dozsa Gyorgy ut, 106 District VI Budapest 1068 Hungary +36 1 269 5300 |
This hotel has a very convenient location. It is within a five-minute walk of two of the city's most well known museums and is right next to the zoo and a huge park (that has hot baths and a castle) as well as the amusement park. Furthermore, many fine restaurants and cafés are also at hand. The hotel is also on the yellow subway line and has numerous bus connections to the centre. Not all rooms are air-conditioned, so in the summer months be sure to check, as otherwise sleeping can get a little uncomfortable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Napvirag utca 5 District II Budapest 1025 Hungary +36 1 394 4564 |
If you really want to take advantage of the beauty and calm of the Buda hills, then this is the place to stay. Located at the end of the bus line, this panzio is within easy walking distance of the top of Lato hegy (376 meters) as well as a whole network of hiking and biking trails. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hotel near Gellert hill |
Stoczek utca 5-7 District XI Budapest 1111 Hungary +36 309 11 5755 |
This summer-only hotel has a whopping 185 rooms. Rooms at this price are a bargain and the location is quite good: not far from Gellert hill and the University buildings. Facilities are rather limited but there is parking and wheelchair access. Review © 2007, Wcities |

No frills |
Jokai ter, 9 District VI Budapest 1061 Hungary +36 1 374 3000 |
This hotel is both inexpensive and centrally located. As it is situated just off Andrassy ut, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby, with good nightlife and easy public transport connections. The rooms are simple, but clean and pleasant. This hotel represents a good combination of excellent location and value for money. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located beside southern railway station |
Krisztina korut, 41-43 District I Budapest 1013 Hungary +36 1 488 8100 |
This hotel is located next to one of Budapest's few architectural disasters: the southern railway station. Fortunately, many rooms face away from the station, towards Castle Hill so be sure to ask for one of these when booking! The standards are high as you might expect from the Mercure chain. The hotel is on several public transit lines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large downtown hotel |
Kecskemeti utca, 14 District V Budapest 1053 Hungary +36 1 486 8800 http://www.mercure.com |
This very large hotel is made up of two separate buildings, connected to each other by one of Budapest's few aerial walkways. The location is excellent, on a side street just off one of the city's busiest thoroughfares. The windows have been soundproofed, ensuring your stay will be peaceful. There are many trendy cafés and excellent restaurants nearby and many sights are within easy walking distance. Be aware that there are several Mercure hotels in the city: you will need to know the name of the one you have chosen or the taxi driver may take you to the wrong one. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small downtown hotel |
Kadar utca 7 District XIII Budapest 1132 Hungary +36 1 329 3830 |
This small, two-star hotel is in a great location; downtown near the Nyugati train station. It is within easy walking distance of most of the major sights. If you stay here you'll really be in the centre of things downtown. Right nearby is a huge shopping complex, as well as many bars, cafés, clubs and so on. The atmosphere in this area is very alive, very current, and very infectious. In many ways it is the most vibrant area of the city, constantly changing but still somehow staying the same. In the Buda hills and family run |
Bimbo ut 25a District II Budapest 1022 Hungary +36 1 326 7741 |
A Buda hills panzio, which is family run. There are 9 rooms, which feel like bedrooms in a house - maybe because they are. Getting to the center is easy, by bus to Moskva ter (where you can catch the metro). The street name is actually pronounced bimbu, and not bimbo, which delights many guests. The immediate surrounding area is considered to be one of the most desirable residential areas in the city. There are some fantastic panoramic views from here, as well as many green areas and interesting walks. Needless to say, there are some magnificent houses scattered about. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An affordable Sports hotel |
Vajda Peter utca 38-42 District X Budapest 1101 Hungary +36 1 266 1423 |
Another hotel off the Ulloi ut, this one has a sports connection and is often used by visiting teams. There is a nice park near by, and the connection to the centre is fast and easy via the M3 Metro. If you are here for the sports, then look no further. On the other hand, if you're using the Metro to get into town, get off one or two stops before the main station (Deak ter) and enjoy the interesting walk the rest of the way. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Eotvos ut, 52-54 District XII Budapest 1121 Hungary +36 1 395 6505 http://www.normafahotel.com |
This hotel is located at the top of the beautiful Buda hills, surrounded by plenty of trees, good views and fresh clean air. On weekends, thousands of people come up to the large stretches of parkland surrounding the hotel to walk, have picnics, ride bicycles, exercise dogs and generally relax. In the winter you can find both downhill and cross-country skiers enjoying themselves. There is also a swimming pool. During the summer months, meals can be taken in the garden. Equipped with a bowling alley |
Alkotas utca, 63-67 (District XII) Budapest 1123 Hungary +36 1 209 1990 http://www.novotel-bud-congres... |
This is the perfect spot for those conventioneers who are attending something at the city's International Conference Centre, which is just next door; they host hundreds of conferences each year. It's situated at a main highway junction on the Buda side on the road leading out to Vienna, making for a convenient commute to all points along the way, as well as for day trips outside the city. Bowling enthusiasts, you're at home, for there's an alley in the hotel. A full selection of business services are available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Situated in the Buda Hills |
Eotvos ut, 40 District XII Budapest 1121 Hungary +36 1 395 6447 |
This hotel is located in the Buda hills so it has the advantages of being near fresh air and green surroundings. The hotel itself is fairly simple but it does have a pool. There are also tennis courts nearby and even a sauna. For those looking for the combined advantages of the city and the country, this is a good choice. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Smaller hotel just outside the centre |
Ulloi ut 108 District X Budapest 1101 Hungary +36 1 263 0794 |
This two star hotel is in a nice building; the only drawback is that it is close to both a major road and train tracks: ask for a room at the back. Travel to the centre is easy (about seven minutes by metro). There are some interesting walks to be had in the immediate area, revealing a somewhat different side to Budapest than the impression offered by the city centre. You may wish to leave the Metro several stops before downtown, as the walk from there passes through some of Budapest's more interesting streets, full of small local cafes, shops and other interesting places. Spacious apartments |
Pasareti ut, 133 District II Budapest 1026 Hungary +36 1 394 1932 |
This is definitely a place to consider if you want peace and quiet, especially in the warmer months. The location is close enough to downtown to be convenient, but far enough away to be relaxing. More a huge house than a hotel, the atmosphere is informal and tranquil. Large terraces make sun tanning or afternoon naps especially pleasant. You can reach the centre in about twenty minutes by public transport. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Quiet hotel near Oktogon |
Akacfa utca, 1-3 District VII Budapest 1072 Hungary +36 1 478 3050 |
This small, friendly hotel is located on a quiet side street near Oktogon. The location is excellent. Oktogon is one of the city's main intersections. Most of the major sights are within easy walking distance and the yellow metro line also runs this way. Access to the train stations is also easy, making this hotel a definite leader in terms of good location and value for money. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Follow the signs for this hotel as you drive in on the highway from Vienna. It's a big hotel set in calm and peaceful surroundings overlooking a park. There are recreational facilities nearby, as well as some good restaurants. Getting to the centre takes less than twenty five minutes by public transport. It should be noted that the lower-floor rooms are slightly cheaper. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hotel near the stadium |
Istvanmezei ut 1-3 District XIV Budapest 1146 Hungary +36 1 252 6749 |
This hotel is within a two-minute walk of the grounds of Budapest's main stadium (sporting events). As a result it is popular with fans from out of town. It is also convenient for the Keleti train station and M2 metro. With only 11 rooms, booking ahead is necessary. The immediate area around the hotel is not inspiring, but it is what some would call the real, or perhaps other Budapest. Getting to the center takes less than ten minutes by Metro. This hotel is located in the peaceful, tree-filled area near Heroes' Square where most of the consulates are situated. The apartments are spacious and come fitted with kitchens. It is located close to many sights and is on major public transit lines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is a charming hotel - one of the prettiest in the city - located very close to the Nyugati (western) station on a busy boulevard. The coffee shop in particular is not to be missed. Here, waitresses dressed in turn-of-the-century costumes serve coffee and delicious cakes on beautiful Herend porcelain. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fairly basic but comfortable |
Soroksari ut, 12 District IX Budapest 1097 Hungary +36 1 455 8300 |
This may be the smallest hotel in the Mercure chain, but it lacks none of their typical comforts. You can expect the same standard of service and quality, though on a somewhat smaller scale. Some of the rooms overlook Gellert Hill, which makes them worth asking for when making a booking. Transport into the centre is easy to get from here and many interesting sights are within easy walking distance. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Centrally located budget hostel |
Second Floor Nemet utca, 13 Budapest 1084 Hungary +36 1 303 8302 |
This budget hostel is located in the very heart of the eighth district, within reasonable walking distance (or a short public transport ride) of most of the major sights. The rooms are all either doubles and triples, or have six beds. There is a laundry facility as well as e-mail access. Full kitchen facilities are also available and there is no curfew time. Comfortable sporty feeling hotel |
Torokbalinti ut, 51-53 District XII Budapest 1112 Hungary +36 1 246 4643 |
This is more like a panzio (a traditional Hungarian inn) than a formal hotel. It has tennis courts in a large open front yard, lots of greenery all around and a swimming pool thrown in as a bonus. On top of that, it is situated in one of the greenest and quietest areas of Budapest: the twelfth district. Public transport to the centre is available, with the one-way trip taking approximately half an hour. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Recently refurbished hotel |
Roosevelt Square, 2 District V Budapest 1051 Hungary +36 1 266 1234 http://www.sofitel.hu |
The 8-storey atrium (complete with a full-scale replica of an early aeroplane) suggests where the hotel's name originated. It makes for a delightfully light and airy place to dine. All room sizes offer the possibility of a view over the Danube. A refurbishment has equipped this hotel (originally built in 1982) with all the modern conveniences you would expect. The lobby is worth seeing. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Affordable Buda side hotel |
Menesi ut 5 District XI Budapest 1118 Hungary +36 1 386 9989 |
This large hotel offers simple and comfortable rooms at a good price. The location is also quite good, and is near Gellert hill. There are 170 rooms and even a swimming pool. In the immediate vicinity of the hotel are some interesting old streets, and walking all the way to the top of Gellert Hill from here is a very rewarding experience. If you really want to have some wonderful panoramas, then resist the temptation to take the bus to the top. The walk is infinitely more rewarding, and only takes about fifteen minutes. Small family-run panzio |
Kossuth Lajos utca 42 District XIX Budapest 1195 Hungary +36 1 280 2489 |
This is yet another of the family-run panzios out off the Ulloi utca. You get there by taking the M3 to the last stop. It is on a street named after a Hungarian hero: in fact, all the streets in this old-fashioned neighborhood are named after heroes. The Sziszi Panzio sounds funny in English as it is pronounced sissy. The surrounding area is one of the nicer Pest side residential regions. Walking through some of the smaller streets is quite interesting, and offers insights into daily life here. Do not be startled as you stroll by the seemingly endless number of barking dogs who are safely tucked away behind fences. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is arguably the most conveniently located hotel in the city, that is, for those who like to shop and be in the thick of things. Its attractive price helps as well! Located on Vaci utca, the main downtown pedestrian shopping street, Taverna Hotel is a hop and a skip from the action. It houses a delightful coffee shop to get you going and also offers bicycles for rent. Try their excellent restaurant which offers a decently priced lunch buffet. The staff is friendly and informative. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This panzio has a great location. It is on the Buda side at the foot of famous Sas hegy (Sas Hill). The hill, which is a city landmark, is 266 metres high and home to small lizards. The panzio is small and family-run, with nine double rooms. Repeat customers - looking for peace and quiet, a convenient location and convenience - make it popular. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is a small modern hotel, separated from the Danube (on the Buda side) by a road. It offers terrific views of the river and is surrounded by an historic area that has long been neglected but which has recently been undergoing renewal. There are many sights within easy walking distance (including a staircase that leads up to Castle Hill) and it has good access to public transport. Most of the rooms here are twins.
