Afika Apartmanhaz

Private rooms near the centre
Mester utca, 3
District IX
Budapest 1095
Hungary
+36 1 275 9136
Located in the ninth district, this apartment house hotel is a short eight-minute Metro ride from the centre (M3 line). It offers six rooms with a range of facilities, including parking and a sports and fitness room. The location is a good one, and allows for some interesting walks in the immediate vicinity. As is the case with any hotels on the Metro line, it is worth getting off the train one or two stops from the center, as there you will find some of the more interesting and less commercial/tourist streets.

Club Hotel Ambra

Apartment-only hotel
Kisdiofa utca, 13
District VII
Budapest 1077
Hungary
+36 1 321 1533
http://www.hotelambra.hu
This apartment-only hotel actually works on a time-share scheme, so if you belong to RCI (Resort Condominiums International - an international time-share company) you could perhaps get an exchange week. The building is modern and has pleasant decor. All four-bedroom apartments come with a kitchen. The location is convenient - within walking distance of several sights and entertainment venues. Public transport is also available nearby.

Golden Park Hotel

Next to the train station
Baross ter, 10
District VIII
Budapest 1082
Hungary
+36 1 313 1420
Located next to the Keleti station, this hotel is convenient but can be noisy. Rooms either have a shared bathroom and shower down the hall, or for a little more you can get a private shower. The hotel is within walking distance of many sights and is on all major public transport lines. Many guests use it while waiting for long distance trains from the nearby station and the amount of baggage that some of them have is truly astounding.

Grand Hotel Hungaria

Extremely large hotel
Rakoczi ut, 90
District VII
Budapest 1072
Hungary
+36 1 889 4400
http://www.danubiusgroup.com/g...
Located at the top of Rakoczi ut, next to the Keleti (Eastern) rail station, this is a big hotel (it claims to be the biggest in Hungary) with fairly unimpressive architectural features. The service is efficient and the rooms are acceptable - just pray that you don't get one at the end of one of the half-mile long corridors. There are also some 'junior suites', which have recently been refurbished.

Hostel Marco Polo

First-class downtown hostel
Nyar utca, 6
District VII
Budapest 1072
Hungary
+36 1 413 2555
http://www.marcopolohostel.com/
This hostel is excellent. Even the dorm rooms are comfortable and relatively private (they are divided by small walls and curtains). Singles, doubles, triples and quads are also available. The standard here is much higher than in most hostels; in fact, it's even higher than that in many budget hotels. A wide range of services is offered; from internet access to newspapers and magazines. Reception is open 24 hours, there is no curfew or lockout and the staff are enthusiastic and friendly. What more could you want?

Hotel Manzard Panzio

Just outside city centre
Blathy Otto utca, 21
District VIII
Budapest 1089
Hungary
+36 1 210 4125
This hotel is located on a side street in the eighth district, near a main road (Ulloi ut). There is a Metro stop within walking distance. Through much renovation and renewal, the eighth district has added lots of interesting small shops and cafés. Its seedier side has been almost completely eliminated, and now this neighborhood can be considered one of the most genuine in the city.

Hotel Platanus

Affordable, downtown hotel
Konyves Kalman korut, 44
District VIII
Budapest 1087
Hungary
+36 1 333 6505
This three-star hotel is located in the eighth district. It offers the usual Eravis chain features such as satellite TV and mini-bar, but at a more attractive price than most of its competitors. It is a short tram ride to the city centre and other attractions. While you may have heard that the eighth district has a dubious reputation, it is constantly being gentrified, and is now a much more respectable (and affordable) part of the city. New and upscale restaurants, cafes and bars are opening here all the time, while the more seedy element is almost completely gone.

Ibis Centrum Hotel

Downtown hotel
Raday utca, 6
District IX
Budapest 1092
Hungary
+36 1 215 8585
There is plenty of traffic whizzing past this downtown hotel. As with all Ibis hotels, you can expect a very good standard of service and value for money. The location is convenient for all of the city's sights and the streets immediately surrounding the hotel are full of interesting small shops and cool cafés. There are also excellent public transport connections to the hotel.

Mercure Korona Hotel

Large downtown hotel
Kecskemeti utca, 14
District V
Budapest 1053
Hungary
+36 1 486 8800
http://www.mercure.com
This very large hotel is made up of two separate buildings, connected to each other by one of Budapest's few aerial walkways. The location is excellent, on a side street just off one of the city's busiest thoroughfares. The windows have been soundproofed, ensuring your stay will be peaceful. There are many trendy cafés and excellent restaurants nearby and many sights are within easy walking distance. Be aware that there are several Mercure hotels in the city: you will need to know the name of the one you have chosen or the taxi driver may take you to the wrong one.

Pannonia Hotel Emke

Quiet hotel near Oktogon
Akacfa utca, 1-3
District VII
Budapest 1072
Hungary
+36 1 478 3050
This small, friendly hotel is located on a quiet side street near Oktogon. The location is excellent. Oktogon is one of the city's main intersections. Most of the major sights are within easy walking distance and the yellow metro line also runs this way. Access to the train stations is also easy, making this hotel a definite leader in terms of good location and value for money.

Relais Mercure Duna Hotel

Fairly basic but comfortable
Soroksari ut, 12
District IX
Budapest 1097
Hungary
+36 1 455 8300
This may be the smallest hotel in the Mercure chain, but it lacks none of their typical comforts. You can expect the same standard of service and quality, though on a somewhat smaller scale. Some of the rooms overlook Gellert Hill, which makes them worth asking for when making a booking. Transport into the centre is easy to get from here and many interesting sights are within easy walking distance.
