'Art hotels' are all the rage in Europe, each dedicated to the art and design of a single artist, and in the case of Budapest it's the work of American artist Donald Sultan. The hotel's location is excellent: in the city's heart, on the Buda side of the river. Everything from the carpets to the wall designs, actual paintings and more are by Mr. Sultan. The surrounding area is made up of beautiful decaying mansions, some of which have undergone renovation as well as others which apparently have not been touched in several years. Fancy new coffee house |

The Europa now occupies the premises used until only recently by a wonderful old cukraszda (café and coffee shop) called Sziget. Although this new coffee house tries its best, it has a hard time recreating the atmosphere of the old place. This coffee house is so bright even poseurs would be excused for wearing shades indoors. It has a slippery marble floor that is continually being swept by young girls. The place is done out in brown wood and olive green recalling a Viennese konditorei. There is also a balcony high above where men in suits sit and from where you can hear Hungarian pop singers wail loudly over the stereo. A cup of Viennese coffee comes with a traditional glass of water and delicious whipped cream and costs 270 ft. Many pensioners still sit around occupying their ex-local, with only a glass of water on the table in front of them. On their pension, they can make it last an hour. The head patissier and café boss Barnabas Ziniel certainly makes some delicious looking cakes including Tiramisu and Black Forest gateau. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Built between 1912 and 1918, this Art Nouveau spa hotel was destroyed in World War II, then rebuilt in the original style and modernized. The hotel's domed towers and baths give it an oriental flavor. There are baths, plunge pools, a sauna, massage centre, wave pool (built in 1927), a hot pool with medicinal spa water, as well as a sun terrace. An institute of water therapy also operates on the premises. The hotel has a delightful open-air restaurant terrace, which offers great views. This hostel is excellent. Even the dorm rooms are comfortable and relatively private (they are divided by small walls and curtains). Singles, doubles, triples and quads are also available. The standard here is much higher than in most hostels; in fact, it's even higher than that in many budget hotels. A wide range of services is offered; from internet access to newspapers and magazines. Reception is open 24 hours, there is no curfew or lockout and the staff are enthusiastic and friendly. This budget hotel offers some of the most spectacular views in the city as it is perched at the very top of Gellert Hill, inside the historic Citadella. To get there, you could either walk through the park from the Elizabeth bridge or take a bus (27) that goes almost all the way. For a location like this with magnificent views, you would expect to pay a fortune, but the Citadella is one of Budapest's best bargains. It's not luxurious, but it is certainly very memorable. This middle-of-the-road hotel offers excellent accommodation at reasonable prices. Located near City Park, it is a short ride by public transit to the city center. Owned by the Eravis chain, it was once a workers' hostel. It is now considerably more luxurious and has a three-star rating. The good location means that you can take strolls in the neighborhood, passing some of the city's most famous streets and landmarks. One of the great deluxe hotels in the city, Kempinski often hosts heads of state and international celebrities. Though it does not offer views of the river, it is still a great place to stay. The rooms have all been beautifully furnished, but those watching the budget may not sleep well here as rates are steep. The hotel does offer plenty of places to eat, from Kempi Brauhaus to the Italian Ristorante Giardino. In the Lobby Lounge high tea is served every afternoon. The Kulturinnov hotel is a gem, which goes pretty much unnoticed by passersby, namely because it's located inside the Hungarian Culture Foundation. The hotel is small, with only sixteen rooms, and is often fully booked well ahead of time by those "in the know". The building in which it's housed is truly beautiful and well worth a look, even if you are not staying at the hotel. You may wish to leave the Metro several stops before downtown, as the walk from there passes through some of Budapest's more interesting streets, full of small local cafes, shops and other interesting places. This large hotel offers simple and comfortable rooms at a good price. The location is also quite good, and is near Gellert hill. There are 170 rooms and even a swimming pool. In the immediate vicinity of the hotel are some interesting old streets, and walking all the way to the top of Gellert Hill from here is a very rewarding experience. If you really want to have some wonderful panoramas, then resist the temptation to take the bus to the top. The walk is infinitely more rewarding, and only takes about fifteen minutes.
