English language books |
Oktober 6 utca, 11 District V Budapest 1051 Hungary +36 1 312 1295 http://www.bestsellers.hu/ |
This bookshop is rather small but nonetheless contains a good variety of quality British fiction. This is also the place to go if you're planning to continue travelling - it stocks Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Time Out, Everyman and other major travel guides to some pretty obscure destinations. There are also cookbooks, children's books and British magazines. The only drawback is that it is relatively expensive. Any title from the U.S. or UK can be ordered free of charge but you may have to wait a month or two for it to arrive. It is open on Sundays. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vintage Hungarian wines |
Mammut Shopping Center, Lovohaz utca, 2 District II Budapest 1024 Hungary |
This shop sells most top-quality Hungarian wines. This includes hard-to-find wines such as Tibor Gal's gorgeous reds from Eger, and the expensive Tokaji Aszu from the Royal Tokaji Wine Company (which is partly owned by British wine writer Hugh Johnson). Stay away from fancy bottles: what's inside should be more important than the container. The shop is located just in front of the escalator on the second floor. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hungarian wine outlet |
Margit utca, 27 District II Budapest 1023 Hungary +36 1 326 4984 http://www.hilltop.hu |
This is the outlet shop for the Hilltop Neszmely winery—the largest exporter of quality Hungarian wines to the UK (eight million bottles per year). Why not try the award-winning 'Woodcutter's White'? The selection is vast and prices are low. From here, you can also arrange a visit to the winery in Neszmely, located near the city of Tata on the border with Slovakia. It boasts an excellent restaurant and guesthouse. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Shopping mall with multiplex |
H-1032 Budapest Becsi ut, 154 Budapest 1035 Hungary +36 (0)1 437 4660 http://www.eurocenter-obuda.hu/ |
This mall is on the same street as another Obuda mall (Uj Udvar), which opened in 1998, showing just how intense the competition in Budapest has become. Eurocenter competes with its predecessor with the aid of a seven screen Hollywood multiplex, an Interspar and some forty five other shops. Parking is free. The mall is air-conditioned which makes it a pleasantly cool haven from the summer heat. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Upscale food market |
Lövöház utca 12 Budapest 1024 Hungary +36 (0)1 322 4098 / +36 (0)1 488 0475 (Tourism Ministry) |
This is the king of all markets, catering to Budapest's more well-heeled inhabitants. The customary fruit, vegetable and meat stalls stand side by side with a Coquan's coffee outlet, a Szega Camembert delicatessen stand, an Asian spices and foodstuffs shop, Demmer's Tea Shop, a fresh seafood and caviar stall, a florist and pet food stalls. It occupies the back end of the Mammut shopping mall. For sheer variety, this is an excellent place to shop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Café with Germanic theme |
Andrassy ut 24 Budapest 1061 Hungary +36 1 353 2233 |
This cafe has a long history and was once a haunt for writers and poets. The café has a tasteful atmosphere with red marble floor, grey marble tables and wooden chairs. German classes of all levels are taught over a cup of coffee. Newspapers, periodicals and magazines (mostly in German will provide you with something to read. Cocoa is served in giant yellow French soup bowls. Order a coffee and the friendly waiter will bring it on a silver tray with a glass of water, just like in a Vienna coffee houses. A range of sandwiches and cakes sit under glass and more elaborate daily specials are chalked up on the board. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is an up-to-the-minute Spanish chain with lots of styles in an equally dazzling array of fabrics and finishes. It is not too pricey and there may even be a few XL pieces available. The trendy bags, scarves and accessories make good gifts. Some shoes are available too. There is also a branch at the West End City Centre. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Rose Hill shopping |
Gabor Aron utca 74 Budapest 1026 Hungary +36 1 391 5998 / +36 18020 1180 http://www.rozsakert.hu/ |
This new mall sits near the top of the Rose Hill area. It has one of the more interesting food courts of any of the malls (mostly small, non-chain ethnic food outlets). There are 80 shops to choose from and a large Kaiser's grocery store. There are lots of parking spaces and they have a huge outdoor play area for kids. In winter, there is even a skating rink out the back. There is often a clown wandering around the mall. Review © 2007, Wcities |
