This bookshop is rather small but nonetheless contains a good variety of quality British fiction. This is also the place to go if you're planning to continue travelling - it stocks Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Time Out, Everyman and other major travel guides to some pretty obscure destinations. There are also cookbooks, children's books and British magazines. The only drawback is that it is relatively expensive. For a taste of consumerism in days gone by, take a trip to the Corvin department store. It is the original Hungarian concept of a department store, full of seventies-style furniture. But look closely and there are more than a few everyday finds here. The largest of these-originally opened in 1897 - is in Fovam ter, on the Pest side, just by Szabadsdag (Liberty) bridge. The three-storey market re-opened in 1994 after extensive restoration work including a delightful roof made from Zsolnay ceramic tiles. Used extensively by locals, there are hundreds of stalls selling fruit and vegetables, groceries, meat and fish, cheeses and pretty much everything else. It is worth a visit, but bear in mind that Saturday morning is the busiest time of the week. Another equally well restored, though smaller market is in Hold utca in the fifth district, near Szabadsag ter and opposite the charming National Savings Bank building. This is one of the first of many shopping centres established in Budapest. It contains a bowling alley—Vilati Bowling Centrum, Virgin Megastore, Marks and Spencer, a cinema multiplex, food court, etc. It is slightly more accessible than other shopping centres. This shop sells high-quality goods. The first floor consists mainly of sportswear for men and women, with a large selection of oilskin jackets and outerwear. The womens wear is smart-casual and includes several Austrian boiled wool jackets and winter wool coats. Hunting rifles, shoes, fishing gear, under-shirts, camping stools etc. can all be found on the second level. There is also a good selection of comfortable shoes for men and women. The clothing is almost exclusively olive green and very well made. The shop sells such a broad selection of clothing and accessories that even your hunting dog can be kitted out here. This two-level music store selling CDs, videos and DVDs can be found in the main shopping area. It stocks the usual pop and rock offerings, but its strengths are soul, funk, hip hop, R'n'B, blues, golden oldies on CD (e.g. Peggy Lee, Connie Francis and Billy Preston), jazz, classical (with lots of EMI budget label releases), opera and Hungarian folk and gypsy music. The world music section is unfortunately a little depleted but it's worth mining for the odd find. Headphones are available but you can only listen to a pre-set selection of tracks. This cafe has a long history and was once a haunt for writers and poets. The café has a tasteful atmosphere with red marble floor, grey marble tables and wooden chairs. German classes of all levels are taught over a cup of coffee. Newspapers, periodicals and magazines (mostly in German will provide you with something to read. Cocoa is served in giant yellow French soup bowls. Order a coffee and the friendly waiter will bring it on a silver tray with a glass of water, just like in a Vienna coffee houses. You will be bowled over by a delicious fragrance upon entering this specialist bakery. Pita bread is the sole speciality here - with white and whole-wheat versions both available. You may pick up a bag of ten, or as many or as few as you like. Unfortunately, the bakery is closed on the weekends, but other Arab grocers such as Rana Center ABC stock it all the time, although it's sometimes frozen. It's well worth buying it fresh here for its soft texture. Take the No 7 bus (the black one, not the express) one stop past Keleti Station and you'll find it right across the street. This is a fair-sized shop filled with countless Middle Eastern treats. These include nuts, dried fruits, more than half a dozen types of olives, feta cheese, haloumi, kaymak, canned and frozen okra, melokhia, black-eyed beans, giant white beans (Greek fasolia giganthes), chickpeas, foul (fava beans) and other dried and canned legumes. There is also a butcher's counter selling fresh lamb, basturma and other meats. The large selection of spices and most other ingredients are generally cheaper than those found at other shops. Whatever Middle Eastern ingredient you're looking for, they're likely to have it here. This has got to be the grandest and most beautiful market hall in Europe. Opened in 1897, the building—designed by Samu Pecz—underwent a thorough renovation and re-opened for its centenary. It's a massive, airy space filled with bright piles of food. The mezzanine level is crammed with dozens of folk embroidery and souvenir stands, plus a pleasant cafeteria, beer and food stalls. In the basement, you will find fish, pickles (savanyusag) and a supermarket as well as the hallowed Azsia—an international foods store. The fabrics are all unique and interesting, the styles original and contemporary and the prices reasonable. Apart from the fashion, there is also a carefully selected range of decorative household items, most of which are produced by local artists and craftspeople.
