Organized by the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, these customized tours put Buffalo's architectural heritage on display. Tours can be arranged for one, two or more days with accommodations, dining and other activities included. Among the tours are: Designing a City, exploring the downtown area as well as the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy; Opulent Buffalo, featuring mansions from the turn of the 19th Century; and Symbols of Power, which includes Buffalo City Hall, an American Art Deco masterpiece. Making Scents of Exotic Flowers |

Located in an 1890s tri-domed Victorian glass conservatory on the grounds of South Park, created by NY Central Park designer Frederick Law Olmsted, these gardens feature exotic flowers and plants from around the world. The gardens are operated by The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry and on the National Register of Historic Places. Highlights include an orchid and bromeliad house, herb collection, and waterfall. There are also seasonal shows such as Spring Flowers, All-American Annuals in summer, and December Poinsettias. Founded in 1862 by Buffalo native and former President Millard Fillmore and housed in the last remaining building from the 1901 Pan American Exposition, the Society has exhibits on Western New York history from the first explorers to the present. Included in the over 80,000 artifacts are items such as the pistol used to assassinate President William McKinley in Buffalo in 1901. Located in North Tonawanda, between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, this is the only historic carrousel factory in the nation. The museum opened in 1983 and is situated within the original Allan Herschell Company factory, which began operating in 1916. A National Historic Site, the building is now divided into seven connected areas demonstrating such things as woodcarving, horse restoration, and two original carrousel's. Located along the Lockport section of the Erie Canal, this amazing underground boat ride is unique. Using a custom-built flat-bottom boat, visitors go on a half-mile trip through a man-made hydraulic raceway cut out of solid rock, the work of 19th century genius Birdsill Holly— the man who gave the world the fire hydrant and zoned steam heat. This two-hour cruise takes visitors on a trip down the Erie Canal and into history. Starting in Lockport, the vessel is raised 49 feet through Erie's only double set of locks. The ship passes beneath bridges and along the canal's cut-rock walls—accompanied by a narrated description of historical sites and Erie Canal folklore. Home to President Millard Fillmore from 1819-30, this museum in East Aurora has been designated a National Historic Site. It contains many of the period pieces from that era, including the President's bed and antique toys. Originally purchased in 1930 to be used as a studio by artist Margaret Price (of Fisher Price), the house was bought by the Aurora Historical Society in 1975. Visitors can see the original pantry with tin ware and pottery, restored fireplace, the Presidential Rose Garden with pre-1840 varieties, and carriage barn. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A tribute to the vision of Father Nelson H. Baker, this church was the second in the U.S. to receive a basilica designation in 1926. Located in Lackawanna, the basilica's copper-topped dome and twin bell towers can be seen for miles. The church was built in the 15th-16th century Renaissance-style, featuring a French Baroque interior. There is a gift shop where you can buy books, crucifixes, mugs and Father Baker's most popular statue of Our Lady of Victory. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Declared a National Historic Site in 1986, this collection of 14 buildings is the legacy of Elbert Hubbard, the visionary writer and printer who, more than 100 years ago, founded a utopian arts and crafts community based on the principles of the medieval guilds. Located in East Aurora about 30 minutes south of downtown Buffalo, the campus includes such buildings as the recently renovated Roycroft Inn, and the Roycroft Shops. The Ansley Wilcox family, friends of Theodore owned this early 19th century Greek revival mansion. It became the site of Roosevelt's Presidential inauguration in 1901 following the assassination of President William McKinley, and so was named the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site. The only National Park Service location in Western NY, its displays include items related to the assassination and inauguration.
