Since its humble beginnings in 1957, this downtown art festival has become one of the largest of its kind in the country. Held the second weekend in June, it draws hundreds of artists and thousands of visitors annually to the historic Allentown neighborhood. Exhibits are set up on Delaware Avenue from Allen to Edward Streets, and on Allen, Edward, and Virginia west to Elmwood Avenue. Art categories include painting, photography, jewelry, crafts, mixed media, and clay. Artists can enter a juried competition with cash awards totaling more than USD35,000. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Held in mid-August each year at the Erie County Fairgrounds in Hamburg, this fair ranks as one of the largest in New York state - and one of the oldest with the first fair held in 1820. The first "hamburger" was created here in 1885. The fair aims to promote agricultural activities in the region through booths, exhibitions, games, rides, creative arts, horse shows and other activities for the entire family. Taking place every August on the grounds of the Hawk Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, this wildlife exhibit and art auction helps raise money for the work of the center. In particular the rehabilitation of wild creatures and endangered species. This is one of two weekends the center is open to the public, and it features an auction of original prints by noted artists, music, presentations by naturalists and environmentalists; and a kids' eco-trail. One of the original members of the American Football League, started in 1959 to rival the established National Football League, this team has become one of the most successful NFL teams. The team appeared in four straight Super Bowls during the early 1990s. Unfortunately, they lost and have never achieved the ultimate triumph. The team has, however, won several American Football League titles in the 1960s. The Bills play out of Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park. Their season runs from September to January. Celebrating the Erie Canal |

For eight days in July each year, the glory days of the Erie Canal are brought to life thanks to this festival sponsored by the twin cities of North Tonawanda and Tonawanda. Some 350,000 come from all over Western New York and beyond to take part in art shows, food tastings, musical tributes, trips along the canal, mime shows and open houses. The event, which began in 1983, ends with a spectacular fireworks display from a barge on the Niagara River. Admission is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Celebrating Buffalo's waterfront history and future, this two-day festival in early August brings together some of Buffalo's community volunteers with the general public for fun, safety tips and environmental awareness programs. The two days include: tours of historic naval ships, a chance to create arts and crafts, a Species Parade featuring kids with homemade costumes, live entertainment, boat building demos and a country market. Summertime concerts in front of M&T Bank's Main Street tower in the Theater District have become as much a tradition in Buffalo as chicken wings. For years, downtown workers and visitors have enjoyed their lunch while listening to a free show. The variety of acts runs the gamut, from jazz and rock, to soul, dance, gospel and community theater. This annual arts and crafts festival takes place on the grounds of the historic Roycroft Campus, the site of writer philosopher Elbert Hubbard's utopian community. Thousands come each year to shop for the latest arts and crafts designed by Roycroft Renaissance artisans, and to enjoy the entertainment. Admission is free. Starting as a local area food festival for downtown restaurants in 1984, this Buffalo Place-sponsored extravaganza has grown into the second largest culinary festival in the country. Over 500,000 are attracted to the downtown core to sample food from some 50 participating restaurants, offering 150 local delicacies from Buffalo wings to Polish sausage.
