The festivities begin at Fort Calgary where participants are invited to don their most foolish garb. Then, led by Calgary's Stampede Showband alongside towering stilt walkers, enormous dragons and other benign monsters join the parade through Inglewood. Originally conceived in February 1989 as relief to the year-long hangover Calgarians were suffering after hosting the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, this 11-day festival has grown into one of Calgary's favourite events. This celebration of everything snowy, frosty and cold, includes ice sculpture contests, human curling championships, music, clowns, winter crafts, snowboarding demonstrations and more. Most events are free and take place in various venues throughout the city. And in spite of the theme of the festival, many are held indoors or in heated tents. It is February, after all.

If you haven't felt a good adrenaline rush in a while, this thrilling, eighty-second bobsled ride down a track used in the 1988 Olympic Games is well worth the CAD45 price tag. Using a specially built bobsled that requires neither steering nor brakes, sledders rocket down the ice-covered track at speeds in excess of 90 kilometers per hour. It's all perfectly safe, but is sure to get your blood pumping again. For most, the first ride is enough, but if you're ready for more, the staff will help you gear up for a second run.

This stunningly peaceful park is one of the city's most beautiful green spaces. Large shade trees tower over a slow moving stream, and pathways cross over arched bridges and along the foot of a dozen rolling hills. There are picnic tables, cross-country ski trails, tennis courts and playgrounds. Still, aside from the wedding parties that come here on Saturdays for photos, visitors always feel as if they have the park to themselves. It is a mystery why this park isn't packed on sunny days, but the regulars are not complaining.

Located at the base of an escarpment created by an ancient and much mightier Bow River, this natural area is just 15 minutes from downtown's office towers. Picnic and playground areas are suitable for families or larger groups, and a running/cycling path tracks closely to the river. The big attraction is the Douglas Fir Trail, a reasonably short but strenuous hike up and down a series of steps and walkways placed between the bases of beautiful, towering fir trees.

Canada's largest urban park stretches some 20 kilometres from the T'suu Tina Reserve at 37th Street to the Bow River's banks in the east, covering much of the southern breadth of the city and dividing established and newer suburbs. Running along shallow, winding Fish Creek, the park is a labyrinth of walking and cycling paths, peppered by groves of mature trees and open meadows. The park features no organized recreational grounds, with day usage intended instead for walking, cycling, blading or picnicking, although tobogganing is popular in the winter. Stables are at one end of the park, and at the far east and south end is the man-made Lake Sikome beach and swimming area. In between are endless acres of largely unspoiled land, where visitors often spot deer or beaver. Archaeological work indicates the Fish Creek valley has been used extensively by humans for more than 2,000 years. To protect this unique area, the province declared it a park in 1975. The Fish Creek Environmental Learning Center, at the west end of the park, is intended primarily for school groups. At the east end, the Bow Valley Ranch Visitor Center, a small bakery cafe, and a more upscale sit-down restaurant, dubbed The Ranch, greet visitors.

This centre gives visitors a hands-on look at early Calgary life. Fort Calgary lies on 40 acres of riverside park. The interpretive centre reconstructs the original 1875 fort, a facility Mounties built after being dispatched from the settled East to establish law and order among pioneers, and to stop the culturally devastating whiskey trade. Visitors can grab a bite of chow, or indeed a shot of whiskey, at the on-site restaurant.

It's difficult to adhere to the ancient warning "beware Greeks bearing gifts" when those gifts are so wonderful. This three-day festival is an opportunity to enjoy the treasures of Greek culture, including Greek music and dance, lectures on Greek mythology, theatre, and cuisine that is often just as difficult to resist as it is to pronounce. All this Hellenistic hoopla occurs at a festival site that features an outdoor stage and dance floor, as well as a children's area. Children under 12 are free.

Nine-hole golf tracks wedged between the winding streets of new suburbs are rarely great tests of the sport, but this one is an exception to that rule. There are 68 bunkers, and water comes into play on seven of the nine holes. This course is challenging, but not a beast; a novice can still come out and beat the ball around, though a few balls might find a watery grave in the process. Green fees are CAD16 for nine holes and rental carts and clubs are available.

Ranked in the Top 25 golf courses in the country, this beautiful beast of a course is open to the public but adopts the "country club for a day" approach to service; golfers are pampered from the moment they pull into the parking lot. Players are sent out over two of the three nines, with 18 holes winding through the Pine Creek coulee and another nine built up top the 'Desert Nine'. This is Calgary's most expensive public course, but few golfers question the fees given the quality and challenge of the day.

Statistics say that Prince's Island is one of the most used urban parks in North America. Come here on a sunny day and you will not doubt it. Way back when, the Island was used to catch felled trees floating down the Bow River from logging projects upstream. Now this bit of serenity in downtown serves as a favourite venue for joggers, football tossers, family picnics, flocks of Canada Geese, buskers, Shakespearean actors and nearly every major festival that Calgary hosts. This is also a great place for a quiet paddle down the river. Admission is free.

Riley Park

An idyllic bit of urban green
800 12 Street Northwest
Calgary, AB T2N 1W3
Canada
+1 403 221 3955
Kensington is adored for its hip shops and cafes, but if you are looking for something a little more tranquil nearby, visit this urban park. Riley Park features vast expanses of green space (perfect for throwing around a football or just lying in the sun), a cricket pitch, picnic tables, a refreshment stand, playgrounds and well-tended flower gardens. On sunny days, children find excitement in the popular wading pool, splashing around with the neighbourhood kids while parents and baby-sitters watch wearily on.

Parents and children flock to this massive family-oriented sports and recreation center to scream down the two twisting, diving waterslide chutes, while toddlers use a much tamer third slide. For alternative thrills, one can throw oneself into the massive artificial waves that wash across the wave pool. The leisure center also has twin ice-skating arenas, an exercise room, a sport hall for badminton, basketball or volleyball, racquetball, squash courts, and a gymnasium that features a rock-climbing wall.

Stephen Avenue Walk

Historic downtown stroll
8 Avenue South West
Calgary, AB T2P 1C2
Canada
+1 403 215 1566 (Calgary Downtown Association.)
The sandstone buildings along downtown's Stephen Avenue were constructed after a fire in 1886 destroyed much of the neighbourhood. Several of those historic buildings fell victim to developers' wrecking balls, but the few that remain are worthy of an afternoon stroll during which you can revel in their architecture. Check out the Old City Hall, the Hudson's Bay Company and the old Bank of Montreal Building, which now houses a vast music store. Along the way you can indulge in the diversions offered by many popular shops and restaurants.
