Alcove Sports Lounge

Daily specials
2373 Banff Trail Northwest
Calgary, AB T2M 4L2
Canada
+1 403 220 9666
This stout building, with its low walls and domed roof, looks strangely out of place among the hotels on the Banff Trail Strip. The unique architecture houses a common room with overstuffed chairs and a high octagonal ceiling. There are also two smaller rooms containing video lottery terminals, several dart boards and a pool table. For CAD 6.99, the best meal in the house is indubitably the 8-ounce sirloin steak sandwich, featuring Alberta beef, garlic toast and fries. This establishment has a different special daily, from CAD15-Shrimp Fridays to 15 cent-Wing Wednesdays. Happy hour lasts until 8p every day.

If your musical taste favors the tweed and you hanker to kick up your heels a bit, head down to the Atlantic Trap & Grill Pub, where they have a large dance floor and feature live Celtic music every weekend from 8pm until midnight. They also offer some of the best seafood (including their famous beer-battered 'fish and chips') in town: Atlantic lobster, mussels in tomato sauce, a seafood bisque and garlic prawns—all at reasonable prices—and, they have a good assortment of beer on tap.

Located in the Dominion Building, which was built at the turn of the century, the Auburn Saloon features a grand old staircase and high ceilings and is a popular hangout for the Live Theatre crowd; partly because it is directly across the street from The Epcor Centre for Performing Arts. Another good reason: their eclectic and upscale menu. Choose from fully-loaded homemade pizza, fancy salads, smoked salmon and their gourmet sandwiches, or simply drop in for a martini from their extensive drink menu.

Long before 'Survivor' hit the airwaves, this cool little drinking establishment has been quenching the thirsts of Calgarians. Barfly

New age distortion
625 11th Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2R 0E1
Canada
+1 403 237 8003
In sharp contrast to the more traditional pubs that sit on either side of it, the Barfly serves up a mean margarita in a modern, stark black and white environment. The high ceiling and green and purple camouflage-painted walls only serve to accent the distortion of reality that is the Fly. The hip restaurant/bar is popular with the 25-plus corporate crowd eager to burn off their workday frustrations, and is usually packed after 8p every night. Friday nights are particularly crazy, and it is almost impossible to squeeze your way through the doors after 6p. For daytime diners, the signature dishes are the stir fry and the sautéed prawns, served hot and spicy.

It was only a matter of time before Victor Choy, proprietor of such trendy bars as The Mercury and Concorde, made his stylish mark on Kensington. The fine-lined woodwork and big windows make this a classier-than-average pub, but it's the menu that truly impresses. This is gourmet pub grub. To go with your beer there are bacon-stuffed burgers with roquefort mayonnaise, sandwiches of pepperoni on rye, baked salmon, and curried chicken salad with peaches.

The menu features fine Italian classics such as antipasti, thin-crust pizzas, pasta, risotto, and entrees like osso buco, beef tenderloin and halibut. http://www.cowboysniteclub.com/
Fans have voted Cowboys the top country bar in the nation, but with acts as un-country as rappers Tone Loc and Vanilla Ice having graced its stage, purists might wonder how that happened. That popularity likely has less to do with music than with the push-up bra brigade of hard-bodied waitresses who staff this downtown club. Playing the part of a less overt Hooters is a clever and wildly successful marketing ploy. The Stetson-wearing guys working the doors and floor are in turn marketed to the clutches of women who drop in. It's an open wood-floored room stripped-down to stools, chairs and tables, with areas loosely separated by railings. Get a long-neck bottle of beer sold in ice-filled tin tubs, or use regular bar service. The typical greasy finger foods are available. This venue is built to handle large crowds of people out to party, typically to recorded music. Expect particularly long line-ups during the annual Stampede.

The menu at this downtown restaurant offers a selection of Spanish dishes, including Valenciana paella and other classics, but the food is not nearly as hot as the dancing. Four nights a week everyone's attention is fixed firmly on the dance floor. Latino bands take the stage, and the place pulses with merengue and salsa dancers. The pros who take the floor have moves that are mesmerizing, and the enforced dress code ensures that everyone looks beautiful.

Calgary, AB T2R 0A5

+1 403 264 0202
Every weekday at 5pm, businesspeople come to this spot to toast the deals they made that day. The decor is mostly dark, aged oak furniture, banisters and tables. A high ceiling draws smoke up and away, keeping the air and atmosphere relatively clear, although by default the upper dining level, located on a balcony above the main floor, is perpetually covered in a blanket of smog. Monstrous wooden chandeliers light three separate bars, one serving mixed drinks and beer, another specializing in the more than 40 varieties of signature martinis.

This comfy bar serves up what any self-respecting pub-goer requires: big tables, football on the telly, and Guinness, Guinness, Guinness. It is hard to imagine that the businessman who birthed many of Calgary's posh and trendy cocktail bars, including the attached Bamboo Tiki Room, could also be behind such a laid back haven for beer. But why ask why? Just sit back, gnaw on some chicken wings and swallow a pint. There are 11 beers on tap. You don't even have to know how to pronounce martini.

Despite being hidden away below a giant, elevated pedestrian bridge to downtown's biggest office tower complex, this outlet of a popular regional chain still manages to do a strong lunchtime business. At the Bankers Hall branch, the draws are simple—familiarity and reliability. There are Earl's all over the city and region; and with a largely uniform menu, look and feel, diners know they are going to get good, interesting food at a reasonable price. Many diners go for Earl's 12-inch wood-fired pizzas and their Italian and Asian pastas and sautees. Or they can graze on appetizers, like Gyoza, a plate of Japanese dumplings.

With its entrance off the towering modern lobby of the new Sheraton Suites Eau Claire, it might be difficult to make the mental leap over the Atlantic to Ireland. But the Emerald Isle is the thematic setting of this new pub and restaurant. Then again, the bar fixtures have been brought over from the old country, and the bar itself is Guinness approved, meaning visitors will find a true pint of the dark nectar. The menu features Joe's take on pub classics, such as a Joe's cabin club, a huge clubhouse sandwich with peppered bacon, ham and turkey. There is a pool table, a popular patio, and a vast bar that offers 18 draught beers on tap. And while the furniture is reminiscent of a high school cafeteria, after a couple of pints one tends not to notice.

One of the first attempts at capturing the look, feel and sensibilities of a small village country pub in the U.K., this stop has remained popular for more than 15 years. Located just a few blocks south of downtown in a rambling old building (legend has it as a former funeral home), there are three distinct bar areas with booths and tables. There are also comfy couches, some near fireplaces. Come summer, there's also a heated patio area. There are some 30 beers, many of them imported and starting at about CAD 5 a pint. The menu, meanwhile, tilts towards finger foods, burgers and sandwiches—though the latter can be as adventurous as turkey, strawberry and Brie on sourdough (CAD 9).

They offer delicious homemade pizzas with a variety of toppings as well as soup, salads, and ribs. Their baked spaghetti is particularly delicious and one of their more popular dishes. They are licensed for beer and wine.

On St. Patrick's Day the lines stretch up the stairs from this basement restaurant-pub to the Stephen Avenue pedestrian mall, with everyone wanting to get in and be Irish for a day. The rest of the year the place is marketed as traditional Irish but could just as easily be traditional Welsh or British, with the food and atmosphere not tilting too heavily toward any particular old-world origin. Known for its lively downtown clientele, there are plenty of traditional beers on tap and pub food available. A Victorian-influenced dining room offers more formal meals, the menu offering items such as Tex-Mex Chicken and Steak and Kidney Pie.
