Bonterra Trattoria

Elegant Italian dining
1016 - 8 St SW
Calgary, AB T2R 1K2
Canada

http://www.bonterra.ca/
There is no shortage of Italian restaurants in Calgary, but most are rather nondescript. Bonterra is an elegant exception. The interior is beautiful with huge iron chandeliers, stonework, fresh flowers, a romantic courtyard and a charming Wine Room for private parties. The menu features fine Italian classics such as antipasti, thin-crust pizzas, pasta, risotto, and entrees like osso buco, beef tenderloin and halibut. Each menu item includes wine suggestions and the wine list itself is a joy: extensive, eclectic and full of tasting notes. Bonterra is cellular-free: another joy.

The juice bars of the early 80's are back in vogue, and this brand new shop in Kensington is one of the best. Booster offers a wide range of juices and smoothies blended with fresh ingredients like orange, beet, ginger, carrot, berry and tropical fruit. For an extra healthy kick add a 'booster' to your drink, wheat grass, ginkgo biloba, rosehip, bee pollen and kola nut are just some of the options. Booster also features soups and sandwiches and a sunny streetside patio.

Kaffa Coffee and Salsa House

Child friendly coffeehouse
2138 33rd Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2T 1Z6
Canada
+1 403 240 9133
There can not be many coffeehouses in Calgary that are more comfortable than this one. Located in a renovated house in hip Marda Loop, this cafe is a perfect place to while away the hours over a "cup of joe." The wooden patio is especially inviting, as are the homemade soups and salsas. You can even check your e-mail on the online computer while the kids run amok in a toy-blessed children's area. Who wouldn't love this place?

Karma Local Arts House

Haven for local musicians
2139 33rd Avenue Southwest

This friendly bar is a favourite of local musicians as a place to perform and patronize. The menu features classic pub fare such as sandwiches, burgers and chicken wings; the beer is tall, cold and reasonablet. They also offer a brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10a-2p. The stage is occupied seven nights a week with folkies, guitar gods and goddesses, blues artists and the odd fiddler. Karma hosts an acoustic open stage every Wednesday night.

Paros

Greeks bearing gifts
2012 4 Street Southwest
Beltline
Calgary, AB T2S 1W5
Canada
+1 403 228 0270
Though restaurants open and close along trendy Fourth Street with alarming frequency, this tiny Greek bistro manages to persist. Charm and great food seem to go a long way. Painted in the welcoming light blue wash that typifies Greek restaurants, Paros offers diners classic dishes that are lovingly prepared. The menu includes appetizers, salads and main dishes such as keftides, lamb paidaika, souvlaki and shish kebabs. There are also platters available for couples to share and an interesting wine list that features Greek wines.

Western Coffee Shop

Friendly Fourth Street diner
2100 4 Street Southwest
Calgary, AB T2S 1W7
Canada
+1 403 229 1505
There are plenty of over-the-top restaurants on hip Fourth Street. This is not one of them. This friendly diner features the kind of food that always comes with fries. The menu, scrawled on numerous chalkboards and bits of paper hanging on the walls, includes all the comfortable diner items: burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast cuisine, and like nearly every other diner in Calgary, offers a few Asian dishes. Unless you count the waitress who whispers "yum-yum" as she delivers your meal, this place is absolutely devoid of frills. What a relief!
