1886 Cafe

Step back in time
187 Barclay Parade Southwest
Calgary, AB T2P 4R5
Canada
+1 403 269 9255
http://www.1886.ca/
The 1886 Café brings nostalgia coupled with great breakfast fare in to the new millennium. Breakfasts include the famous "Kenny's Special": scrambled eggs with cheese, green pepper and mushrooms. The décor is reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century kitchen and harks back to a time when the city of Calgary was nothing more than a scattering of shacks on the riverbank; a basement room is filled with pictures of Calgary in the late 1800s.

Canada

If you enjoy the robust flavor of garlic, check out the signature dish of a restaurant famed for its indulgence in the healthy herb. Its steak—marinated, saturated, garnished and sauced with garlic—is sure to overpower even the strongest breath-freshener. The tidy and welcoming restaurant is outfitted in a traditional Italian style, with antique wine bottles intertwined among the vines lining the walls. For those who aren't enthusiastic about garlic, there are a number of unseasoned dishes and desserts on the menu. Even the air inside, however, is saturated with the sweet and strong scent of the "stinking rose."

The beef here is sliced right off a roast, and the poultry is carved from a rotisserie chicken, directly in front of the customer. There are no real menus here, so you decide exactly what you want on each sandwich, right down to the sauce ingredients. A sub or wrap is usually ready in less than five minutes, making this a good place to grab a quick lunch. Located next to Figbelly's on trendy 17th Avenue, Brava Bistro is a sit-down version of the famous take-out joint with the same name. Its contemporary and breezy atmosphere makes it a great place to relax and replenish after a long day of shopping. The menu offers rather exotic North American fare and a large selection of sandwiches, including a slow roasted pork sandwich with a ginger pear sauce. Complement your meal with any one of the many varieties of white and red wines available by the glass.

Most houses-turned-restaurants hide their origins well, but this popular and classic Italian restaurant still has first-timers double-taking at what looks like someone's bungalow. The homey feeling is carried indoors, nurtured by an ever-present owner and staff who take pains to make diners feel welcome. People keep coming back because the prices are reasonable, the portions serious and the food well prepared and tasty. The house fettuccini is a perennial favourite. There's a private room downstairs for special gatherings, and plenty of parking in the neighbourhood.

The spare, elegant lines of Buddha's provide few distractions from the wide variety of Asian-influenced vegetarian dishes on its menu. About 20 tables dressed in simple red and white provide ample room for up to 100 people to enjoy many pure vegetarian meals, some of which feature meat substitutes so convincing in flavor and texture, you would swear it was the real thing. The servers are prompt and efficient, and customers never have to wait long to find tables or order meals. Because every meal is vegetarian or vegan, prices for comparable servings are less expensive than in restaurants with meat in their dishes. Domestic, European and Asian wines and beers are available for CAD 4-6 apiece.

Don't let the cheap-looking atmosphere stop you from enjoying the excellent food at the Burger Inn. Located on fashionable Fourth Street, its colorful murals and the smell of vinegar mixed with grilled beef lure diners in to sample the incredible burgers. This restaurant uses only premium meat—bison, turkey, ostrich and beef—in order to make a superior burger. Every burger is grilled, then garnished with fresh lettuce, onion and tomato and served on a thick bun. This down-home restaurant mainly does take-out, but there are a half-dozen tables inside for diners who don't want to eat on the run. A burger costs anywhere from CAD 2-7, depending on the type and quality of burger.

The funky James Bond artwork on the walls of the Beano is a refreshing change from typically sterile coffee shop decor. The café is divided into several sections of four or five tables arranged around a central coffee bar, so that instead of feeling like a bustling cafeteria, the atmosphere is that of a cozy, intimate restaurant. Over ten different coffee blends are served, including Sumatran, Brazilian and Swiss. There are also milkshakes, bagels, fruit pies and a number of baked goods and pastries. It's fitting that the feature pizza at Calzoni's is called the Seventh Deadly Sin, because gluttony comes easily to people dining on these hefty pizzas. The restaurant bakes its pizza and pasta in the authentic, zesty Italian style, using the same spices and sauces as the pizzerias of Italy. The crusts are much thicker than traditional North American pizza, and the sauce has a sharp spice to it, which leaves a pleasant aftertaste. A 14-inch pizza costs around CAD 20, and a 10-inch CAD 14.

This turn-of-the-century Victorian mansion was recently restored to its former glory and is one of Calgary's newest theme restaurants. Part of the Fort Calgary Interpretive Center, the house and garden are used for casual dining as well as for hosting wedding receptions, business meetings and corporate retreats. The charming decor and staff uniforms are decidedly historical with an 1890's pioneer focus. Steak, garden salads, pasta dishes and a good selection of wines form the majority of the menu, but the food takes backseat to the atmosphere. Theatre companies occasionally use the Dean House for "Mystery Dinners," where the diners take part in staged murder mysteries. Reservations are recommended.

The decor is rather plain and cafeteria-style, but the service is friendly and the big second-floor windows give an excellent view of the busy neighborhood. Cookies the size of a small pizza in oatmeal, peanut butter, chocolate chip, raisin and a host of other flavors—even if it's only for those sweet creations, this little cafe is worth a visit. Every day there are three lunch specials, such as macaroni salad, curry chicken or some variety of soup. The decor is borderline rustic, with rough-worked wood furniture and ornamentation. Everything is clean and tidy, and the servers are always polite and efficient.

Canada's largest living historical village is divided into a pioneer Northwest Mounted Police outpost and a 1910 Main Street. The latter has a working antique amusement park, with rides that are safe even for small children. Other attractions include a working full-scale locomotive thundering through the park, and on nearby Glenmore Reservoir, a vintage double-decker stern wheeler ship that takes visitors on lake cruises. Shops and restaurants are plentiful in the park, including a turn-of-the-century bakery. All park staff work in costume and character. Entertaining events for the whole family are scheduled year-round, including September's Fall Fair. Check website for full list of events.

On the stomping heels of Riverdance, Irish pubs are a growth industry. This latest pub is also the first one located well outside the city core. This two-level space along one of Calgary's main drags is big on atmosphere and beer, with regular live Celtic music performances and Guinness, Harp and Kilkenny on tap. Nick's Steakhouse and Pizza

Comfortable family dining
2430 Crowchild Trail Northwest
Calgary, AB T2M 3N5
Canada
+1 403 282 9278
Nick's is one of the few restaurants in the city that offers delivery food that tastes as good and fresh as the meals served hot to restaurant tables. The restaurant opened 20 years ago, offering a non-trendy dining atmosphere where nearly everyone could feel comfortable. Once the restaurant was well established, Nick's went a step further by offering delivery services and catering. This is one of the few places where you can get a five-star steak dinner complete with garlic toast, salad and baked potato delivered right to your home, minutes after ordering. Its pizzas are loaded with toppings nearly an inch deep, and come in a huge variety of styles, from traditional Hawaiian to the notorious Chicken-Taco pizza. The prices are pleasantly low, ranging from CAD 15 for a steak dinner to CAD 20 for an extra-large pizza.

The refined atmosphere here seems like an injustice to the food, which is served in such large portions that a lumberjack would be hard-pressed to finish it in one sitting. Seafood is the house specialty, prepared using the same spicy Italian herbs that make its pastas so interesting and flavourful. The Clam Linguini is especially rich and creamy, and takes full advantage of the chef's seafood mastery. The fresh flowers that cover every surface spice the air with a sweet aroma, and a piano player tinkles at soft Italian classics throughout the evening.

Thick, Italian-style loaves are sliced in half and layered with a choice of meats, cheeses and sauces before being oven baked. Consistently voted among the top country bars in the country, this south Calgary institution has been packing people in for generations, particularly during the wild annual Calgary Stampede. While other bars purport to be country, this is the real deal, with strapping young men pulling in by truck at night from the ranches that litter the land surrounding Calgary. The rodeo crowd also hangs out here when in town. There's live music in the dance hall section and a DJ in the bar up front, as well as on the outdoor patio. The attached restaurant serves steaks and burgers starting at CAD 5.

At Rocky's, they don't stand on ceremony. In fact, when you place your order outside this old red bus, you have to stand on top of a step and speak clearly into one of the windows. They offer fast, but delicious food and you can order a number of burgers, hot dogs and various kinds of sandwiches. There are three picnic tables behind the bus, but most people take their delectables and go. Although the fare is simple, it is delicious and well prepared, and the service is friendly and fast.

One of the first attempts at capturing the look, feel and sensibilities of a small village country pub in the U.K., this stop has remained popular for more than 15 years. Located just a few blocks south of downtown in a rambling old building (legend has it as a former funeral home), there are three distinct bar areas with booths and tables. There are also comfy couches, some near fireplaces. Come summer, there's also a heated patio area. There are some 30 beers, many of them imported and starting at about CAD 5 a pint. The menu, meanwhile, tilts towards finger foods, burgers and sandwiches—though the latter can be as adventurous as turkey, strawberry and Brie on sourdough (CAD 9).

Spolumbo's has been serving its signature spicy sausages in local restaurants for years, but only recently opened up its warehouse-style diner in Inglewood. Considered by many critics to be the best sausage maker in Calgary, it serves its soups, sandwiches and hot meals in a cafeteria-type setting with large glass display cases and heat lamps. There are about 30 tables inside the dining room, which is spacious and decorated with the old football jerseys of the Spolumbo sons. The food is inexpensive; a filling meal rarely exceeds CAD 5.

All of the favourites are offered, from smoked salmon to spicy scallops—all fresh and artistically presented. The menu also includes Japanese appetizers, salads and entrees such as Don bowls, tempura, teriyaki dishes and grilled fish. Soothe your wasabi burn with some sake or Japanese beer, or with a scoop of green tea ice cream for dessert.

There are many types of bagels available including organic blueberry and sundried tomato and herb. They offer half a dozen different breakfast bagels, including poached eggs served over smoked meat, and a scrambled concoction with two kinds of cheese. Western Coffee Shop

Friendly Fourth Street diner
2100 4 Street Southwest
Calgary, AB T2S 1W7
Canada
+1 403 229 1505
There are plenty of over-the-top restaurants on hip Fourth Street. This is not one of them. This friendly diner features the kind of food that always comes with fries. The menu, scrawled on numerous chalkboards and bits of paper hanging on the walls, includes all the comfortable diner items: burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast cuisine, and like nearly every other diner in Calgary, offers a few Asian dishes. Unless you count the waitress who whispers "yum-yum" as she delivers your meal, this place is absolutely devoid of frills. What a relief!

What's Up

Authentic Caribbean food and atmosphere
325 17 Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2S 0A5
Canada
+1 403 209 0977
This oddly-named restaurant and bar features affordable Caribbean cuisine. The interior is reminiscent of an authentic African chop-bar with bright blue walls, slightly rickety furniture and a large loud television. The menu features appetizers such as salt fish cakes and salads and main course items include Calypso steak, curries of beef, chicken and goat, jerk chicken and something called "Legs from Heaven." Portions are generous and entrees include piles of rice or yams.

Whiskey Creek Saloon and Steakhouse

The good, the bad, and the thirsty
200 Barclay Parade Southwest
Eau Claire Market
Calgary, AB T2P 4R5
Canada
+1 403 262 9378
There is no shortage of Western-themed restaurants in Calgary, but most seem to be either too phony-cowboy (one regularly features rap musicians) or too hick. This Eau Claire saloon manages to find a pleasant middle ground by adopting a "movie-set western" style. In fact the beautiful wooden bar was a set piece from the movie Legends of the Fall. Their beer is fresh and cold and served in wonderfully curvy ergonomic glasses. The menu consists of the sort of steaks, ribs, chicken and burgers Clint Eastwood would probably enjoy.

Wicked Wedge Pizza Company

Great pizza for late nights
618 - 17th Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2E 1M3
Canada
+1 403 228 1024
http://www.thewickedwedge.com/
Its reputation as one of the best places for a late-night slice means that "The Wedge" is jammed in the wee hours of the morning. Three herb-crusted varieties are featured daily, including such creations as falafel veggie, chicken fajita, and the garden groovy. There is very little seating here—just a few chairs inside and a couple benches on the street, but most of the clientele are looking for a slice to go anyway. Delivery is available anywhere in Calgary.

Wildwood Pub

Food inspired by the Rockies

Canadians struggle at times to define their national cuisine, fumbling away about cod, fiddleheads, maple syrup and tourtiere. But a relatively new spot at the end of trendy Fourth Street SW is making its stand on the notion of contemporary Canadian cuisine, drawing from the wilds of the nearby Canadian Rockies. A run through the moderately priced menu reveals everything from buffalo and caribou to lamb and Woodland rabbit.

Wine Gallery,

European wine-bar
315 - 8 Avenue Southwest
Bankers Hall
Calgary, AB T2P 4K1
Canada
+1 403 290 1091
This classy restaurant in Bankers Hall is a perfect place to enjoy a bottle of wine. Subdued lighting, linens and small tables make for intimate dinners, and there is live jazz here on weekends from October to May. The menu features Italian and Californian-influenced cuisine and includes starters (try the pheasant pate), salads, seafood dishes (such as langoustine and sausage jambalaya), steaks, duck and chicken dishes and pasta. As the name of this place suggests, the wine list is impressive: short, but selective, with a focus on Australian wines.

Wired - The Cyber Cafe

The Internet & coffee
1032 17th Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2T 0A5
Canada
+1 403 244 7070
With the explosion of the Internet, we knew that this kind of establishment was not far away. At Wired - The Cyber Café, you can surf the net, chat to a long-lost pal overseas, and still enjoy an excellent cup of coffee with a toasted bagel. Unlike other dingy basement "cyber cafes" this one is bright, warm and sunny and offers the use of a scanner and color printer for a nominal fee.

Wrapture

Good, fast, healthy food
314a 10th Street Northwest
Calgary, AB T2N 1V8
Canada
+1 403 270 2704
Wrapture is easily the most satisfying fast food downtown; its hefty and fresh rice, meat and vegetable wraps are often too big to finish in one sitting. This is an excellent choice for people who are tired of over-processed fast food. Customers can dine in or take out, but seating is limited to three or four tables in each restaurant. In the summer, courtyards are fenced off from the street, allowing patrons to dine outside. Along with the tempting array of wraps, there are delectable fruit smoothies made with whole fruit and fresh Alberta milk, made right in front of the customers. Wrap prices range between CAD5-6, coffee is CAD1, and smoothies are CAD3. There is no alcohol served, and reservations are not required.

Yamato Japanese Restaurant

Japanese cuisine
3616 52 Avenue Northwest
Calgary, AB T2L 1Z9
Canada
+1 403 282 2217
The Yamato is a family-run Japanese restaurant tucked away in the city's northwest. In fact you can almost miss it if you're not careful, as it is hidden in a strip mall directly across from Sir Winston Churchill School, and offers excellent Japanese cuisine at very reasonable prices. They have a comprehensive menu with more than a dozen appetizers to choose from. The more adventurous diner can order the exotic sashimi seafood or seaweed stuffed with rice.

Zzips Pizza

Open for lunch
522 6th Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2P 0S1
Canada
+1 403 262 7727
Located in the heart of downtown, this is a casual little eatery that offers some of the best pizza and pasta dishes in Calgary. Because of its central location, it does a booming lunchtime business, so come early. Breezy and contemporary, it attracts both a business and family clientele; there is seating available for approximately 65 people and both catering and banquet services are available upon request.
