Step back in time |
187 Barclay Parade Southwest Calgary, AB T2P 4R5 Canada +1 403 269 9255 http://www.1886.ca/ |
The 1886 Café brings nostalgia coupled with great breakfast fare in to the new millennium. Breakfasts include the famous "Kenny's Special": scrambled eggs with cheese, green pepper and mushrooms. The décor is reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century kitchen and harks back to a time when the city of Calgary was nothing more than a scattering of shacks on the riverbank; a basement room is filled with pictures of Calgary in the late 1800s. The menu features a large selection of traditional Middle Eastern specialties such as mezza, kabobs, lamb chops, shwarma, and baklava. If you enjoy the robust flavor of garlic, check out the signature dish of a restaurant famed for its indulgence in the healthy herb. Its steak—marinated, saturated, garnished and sauced with garlic—is sure to overpower even the strongest breath-freshener. The tidy and welcoming restaurant is outfitted in a traditional Italian style, with antique wine bottles intertwined among the vines lining the walls. For those who aren't enthusiastic about garlic, there are a number of unseasoned dishes and desserts on the menu. Even the air inside, however, is saturated with the sweet and strong scent of the "stinking rose." Review © 2007, Wcities |

There are no real menus here, so you decide exactly what you want on each sandwich, right down to the sauce ingredients. About 20 tables dressed in simple red and white provide ample room for up to 100 people to enjoy many pure vegetarian meals, some of which feature meat substitutes so convincing in flavor and texture, you would swear it was the real thing. The servers are prompt and efficient, and customers never have to wait long to find tables or order meals. Because every meal is vegetarian or vegan, prices for comparable servings are less expensive than in restaurants with meat in their dishes. Domestic, European and Asian wines and beers are available for CAD 4-6 apiece. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Old Italy at it's finest |
823 17th Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2T 0A1 Canada +1 403 244 5522 |
You will find Buon Giorno's restaurant located on trendy 17th Avenue, just across the street from Mount Royal Village, which is just the place for an after-dinner stroll. This quaint little Italian eatery has more than location to offer, though: they feature traditional Italian food like linguini in clam sauce and a locally-famous lasagna; the beautiful and elaborate fireplaces make you feel like you are sitting in someone's home; cozy and intimate. Don't let the cheap-looking atmosphere stop you from enjoying the excellent food at the Burger Inn. Located on fashionable Fourth Street, its colorful murals and the smell of vinegar mixed with grilled beef lure diners in to sample the incredible burgers. This restaurant uses only premium meat—bison, turkey, ostrich and beef—in order to make a superior burger. Every burger is grilled, then garnished with fresh lettuce, onion and tomato and served on a thick bun. This down-home restaurant mainly does take-out, but there are a half-dozen tables inside for diners who don't want to eat on the run. A burger costs anywhere from CAD 2-7, depending on the type and quality of burger. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Most Calgarians only "go cowboy" for the two weeks surrounding the annual Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, but western culture is still deeply ingrained in the city and region. This place is decorated with barn wood, barbed wire, western oil paintings and prairie antiques. A moderately priced menu offers buffalo steaks, Buckaroo Beans and fried bull calf testicles, more delicately known as prairie oysters. Burgers come in four varieties: beef, buffalo, chicken and veggie. There's an English pub to the back offering a myriad of brews from around the world. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dark wood paneling and hardwood floors set a classy mood at Caesar's; the service is impeccable and the food is mouthwatering. Because of its popularity, reservations are recommended. The food is a little pricey, but if you like Alberta Beef, this is a great place to enjoy it. You can also choose from an array of other entrees including ribs, chicken, soups and salads. They have a large selection of both red and white wines, and private banquet facilities are available. Valet parking begins every day at 5pm. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This charming cafe features classic Arabic dishes. Romantika offers appetizers such as baba ghanny and baked garlic shrimp, salads, pita sandwiches including falafel and donairs, and pastas like baked lasagna. There is also a lengthy pizza menu with the standard choice of toppings. The restaurant itself is bright and bistro-like with plenty of light, but the bare walls could use some colour. Still this is a fine place for satisfying pizza, pita or pasta cravings. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Funky decor |
1613 Ninth Street South West Calgary, AB T2R 1E1 Canada +1 403 229 1232 |
The funky James Bond artwork on the walls of the Beano is a refreshing change from typically sterile coffee shop decor. The café is divided into several sections of four or five tables arranged around a central coffee bar, so that instead of feeling like a bustling cafeteria, the atmosphere is that of a cozy, intimate restaurant. Over ten different coffee blends are served, including Sumatran, Brazilian and Swiss. There are also milkshakes, bagels, fruit pies and a number of baked goods and pastries. If you're looking for lunch, there are also a number of sandwiches featuring ingredients such as artichokes, goat cheese and meatloaf. The clientele is mostly comprised of professionals from downtown and businesspeople from the area. The large windows looking out onto trendy 17th Avenue make this an excellent location for people watching. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional Italian pizza |
101-825 12th Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2R 1L3 Canada +1 403 216 0066 |
It's fitting that the feature pizza at Calzoni's is called the Seventh Deadly Sin, because gluttony comes easily to people dining on these hefty pizzas. The restaurant bakes its pizza and pasta in the authentic, zesty Italian style, using the same spices and sauces as the pizzerias of Italy. The crusts are much thicker than traditional North American pizza, and the sauce has a sharp spice to it, which leaves a pleasant aftertaste. A 14-inch pizza costs around CAD 20, and a 10-inch CAD 14. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This turn-of-the-century Victorian mansion was recently restored to its former glory and is one of Calgary's newest theme restaurants. Part of the Fort Calgary Interpretive Center, the house and garden are used for casual dining as well as for hosting wedding receptions, business meetings and corporate retreats. The charming decor and staff uniforms are decidedly historical with an 1890's pioneer focus. Steak, garden salads, pasta dishes and a good selection of wines form the majority of the menu, but the food takes backseat to the atmosphere. Theatre companies occasionally use the Dean House for "Mystery Dinners," where the diners take part in staged murder mysteries. Reservations are recommended. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The menu at this downtown restaurant offers a selection of Spanish dishes, including Valenciana paella and other classics, but the food is not nearly as hot as the dancing. Four nights a week everyone's attention is fixed firmly on the dance floor. Latino bands take the stage, and the place pulses with merengue and salsa dancers. The pros who take the floor have moves that are mesmerizing, and the enforced dress code ensures that everyone looks beautiful. Review © 2007, Wcities |

355 10 Street South West Calgary, AB T2R 0A5 Canada +1 403 264 0202 |
Every weekday at 5pm, businesspeople come to this spot to toast the deals they made that day. The decor is mostly dark, aged oak furniture, banisters and tables. A high ceiling draws smoke up and away, keeping the air and atmosphere relatively clear, although by default the upper dining level, located on a balcony above the main floor, is perpetually covered in a blanket of smog. Monstrous wooden chandeliers light three separate bars, one serving mixed drinks and beer, another specializing in the more than 40 varieties of signature martinis. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Despite being hidden away below a giant, elevated pedestrian bridge to downtown's biggest office tower complex, this outlet of a popular regional chain still manages to do a strong lunchtime business. At the Bankers Hall branch, the draws are simple—familiarity and reliability. There are Earl's all over the city and region; and with a largely uniform menu, look and feel, diners know they are going to get good, interesting food at a reasonable price. Many diners go for Earl's 12-inch wood-fired pizzas and their Italian and Asian pastas and sautees. Or they can graze on appetizers, like Gyoza, a plate of Japanese dumplings. 316 4th Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2P 0H8 Canada +1 403 263 2222 http://www.hyssteakhouse.com/ |
The locals consider Hy's a Calgary institution. Dinner for two will run you about fifty dollars though, so it's not for the budget conscious. Richly decorated in reds and gold with opulent carpeting underfoot, Hy's is upscale without being ostentatious. If you are looking to spoil yourself or someone you love, take them to Hy's for some of the best steak in the province. They also do a great job with an array of seafood, chicken and salads, and have an extensive wine menu. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Patio dining |
344 17th Avenue South West Calgary, AB T2S 0A8 Canada +1 403 541 0088 |
Summer is the best season to visit Il Giardino, because meals can be enjoyed outdoors on the patio that overlooks the ever-changing 17th Avenue. The interior of the restaurant is warm and comfortable, with classic Italian decor and neat, courteous servers. It serves traditional Italian pastas and dishes, but the house specialty is definitely the calamari, which is served in such large portions that it often takes two people to finish off a single serving. The rositti is also said to be excellent both in flavor and presentation. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This restaurant, located in a major downtown office building, offers an interesting blend of French and Vietnamese cuisines. Though a little tight and noisy, this small café offers reasonably priced and beautifully presented fare, from various simple noodle dishes to more elaborate concoctions of duck and seafood. The service is friendly and quick, making for a brief but satisfying lunchtime getaway for the harried business crowd from the surrounding office towers. Turkish food & belly dancing |
1512-B 14th Street South West Calgary, AB T3C 1 Canada +1 403 228 0104 |
If you have never had the pleasure of seeing a belly-dancer perform, drop by the Istanbul on a Saturday night when the dancer has the whole house on its feet and rocking to the music. The decor is decidedly Middle Eastern, with lots of rich colors and fabrics, and the food is an enticingly spicy Greek and Arabic mix. Prices are very reasonable—a filling meal will cost anywhere from CAD 2-12. Wine, domestic and imported beers, and a small selection of mixed drinks are available. Located just a few blocks from the 17th Avenue shopping district, the heat and excitement here makes for a refreshing change from the wind and snow of Albertan winters. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A visitor walking through the wide front doors of this revived heritage bank building may quickly feel they've died and gone to Dublin. From the brews on tap (Guinness at three different temperatures and many other ales), to the acres of dark wood and utter absence of TVs or pinging video gaming machines, this is the green isle revisited. Authentic Korean means cooking your own meal right at your table: each of the tables has a built-in barbecue; the menu also features hotpots, which are whole meals cooked at the table. Giant bottles of the house white line the booths at this boisterous and casual Italian eatery, which is part of a small but growing regional chain. The emphasis is on moderately priced pastas and a wide range of appetizers, but many people head right to the menu's pizza section for everything from traditional four-cheese numbers to offbeat tandoori chicken toppings, most for less than CAD10. Restaurants come and go, but the Keg chain has been around for more than a generation as a reliable place for a good steak, devoid of the stuffiness of more traditional steakhouses. Known for a casual atmosphere, table help who insist you know their names and big salad bars, this particular outlet holds true to form. It is set in what looks to passersby like a classic Western ranch house and carries that homey (though bustling) feel inside. Italian refinement |
1223 11th Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T3C 0M5 Canada +1 403 228 3558 |
The refined atmosphere here seems like an injustice to the food, which is served in such large portions that a lumberjack would be hard-pressed to finish it in one sitting. Seafood is the house specialty, prepared using the same spicy Italian herbs that make its pastas so interesting and flavourful. The Clam Linguini is especially rich and creamy, and takes full advantage of the chef's seafood mastery. The fresh flowers that cover every surface spice the air with a sweet aroma, and a piano player tinkles at soft Italian classics throughout the evening. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fresh Vietnamese cuisine |
1403 Centre Street Northwest Calgary, AB T2E 2R8 Canada +1 403 276 3636 |
Centre Street North is home to some of Calgary's best Asian food, and this tiny Vietnamese noodle house is a fine example. The restaurant is decidedly 'no-frills' with cafeteria style tables and, oddly enough, framed golf photos with inspirational captions hanging on the walls. At Huyen the attention is paid to the food. The menu features a large selection of Vietnamese cuisine including noodle soups, rice vermicelli, satay, curries and quails. The drink list includes fantastic shakes made with exotic fruits such as lychee, jack fruit and mango. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Huge beef noodle soups |
1511 Centre B Street Northwest Calgary, AB T2M 2R5 Canada +1 403 276 7435 |
Kim's specializes in a variety beef noodle soups. Bowls come in three sizes: small is enormous, large is for sharing and extra-large will probably feed an extended family. In addition, the delicious noodle and rice dishes on the menu feature such delights as deep fried quail, grilled pork chops, Vietnamese sausage and shrimp skewered on sugar cane. The brave will wash down their meal with one of the exotic-sounding beverages, such as soda with condensed milk and egg yolk, but most will settle for a delicious iced Vietnamese coffee. No fussy food here, with the emphasis on quick-to-grab offerings like burgers (nine different ones), salads (there are 10), and pizzas (16 different kinds). The food is affordable and reliable. Coffee by creative types |
2312 4 Street Southwest Calgary, AB T2S 1W9 Canada +1 403 541 0960 http://www.planetroasters.com/... |
There is something special about this busy café: the staff and much of the clientele seem to be composed of writers, musicians or artists of one stripe or another. The benches outside give coffee-sippers a vantage point from which to spy on passers-by. The walls are regularly adorned with work from local artists, though you might have to peer through a bluish nicotine blur to see it. This is a place where everyone knows your name, or at least the working title of your latest masterpiece-in-progress. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wholesome food and coffee |
3003 37th Street South West Calgary, AB T3E 3B5 Canada +1 403 240 4185 http://www.primalgrounds.com/ |
It is rare that a coffee shop sells only its own baked goods, all made from scratch. This inviting restaurant is one of those anomalies. Primal Grounds practices what it preaches by using organic ingredients and no additives or preservatives in any of its food. Offering finger-food appetizers, lunches (including their famous turkey and cranberry sandwich), Mexican, African and Italian dinners, as well as a generously stocked bakery, they have something for almost any palate. The cafe is decorated in a rustic style, with lots of earth tones and wooden chairs and tables. If dining with a large group, there are platters of appetizers, breakfast combos and fruit with cheese that serve up to ten people at once. There is even a drive-through window for those on the go. The coffee is fresh-ground Arabian stock and can be ordered by the cup or carafe. Prices are a little higher than standard cafes, but the quality of service and food make it worthwhile. Oven-baked subs |
105-1013 17th Ave Southwest Calgary, AB T2T 0A7 Canada +1 403 228 3418 |
It's hard to decide whether or not Quizno's is more than a chain fast food joint but actually a gourmand's treasure. The food is definitely fast, but the baked Italian sub sandwiches are of a quality to delight even the most discerning of diners. Thick, Italian-style loaves are sliced in half and layered with a choice of meats, cheeses and sauces before being oven baked. They are then stuffed with cold vegetables and served hot with pickled peppers on the side. The spicy fillings lend these subs a zest that lingers well after the meal is done. A wide variety of other sandwich choices are available at this national chain's many locations. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Consistently voted among the top country bars in the country, this south Calgary institution has been packing people in for generations, particularly during the wild annual Calgary Stampede. While other bars purport to be country, this is the real deal, with strapping young men pulling in by truck at night from the ranches that litter the land surrounding Calgary. The rodeo crowd also hangs out here when in town. There's live music in the dance hall section and a DJ in the bar up front, as well as on the outdoor patio.
