It was only a matter of time before Victor Choy, proprietor of such trendy bars as The Mercury and Concorde, made his stylish mark on Kensington. The fine-lined woodwork and big windows make this a classier-than-average pub, but it's the menu that truly impresses. This is gourmet pub grub. This no-frills diner on the Trans-Canada Highway looks like it might blow over in a strong wind. Still, it is a charming place to stop for a roadside feed. Mecca's breakfast menu offers the expected array of eggy morning fare, including the enormous Griz platter: three eggs, ham, sausage, hash browns, pancakes and toast. For lunch and dinner, try a tasty burger or sandwiches. There is little in the way of decor, but since most folks are stopping en route to the majestic Rocky Mountains, nobody seems to mind.

Cajun Spice
316 Third Street South East
Calgary, AB T2G 2S4

Although the prices are a little expensive, this restaurant makes a strong effort to bring Cajun flavor and culture to Calgary. The decor is a little loud, with lots of dark woodwork that is reminiscent of a set from a Louisiana riverboat movie. The staff is quite friendly and the service prompt. The clientele consists of both businesspeople out for something different and rabid Cajun food fans. There is a smoker in the kitchen, which can smoke-cure an entire pork shoulder for the restaurant's famous North Carolina Pulled Pork sandwich. A meal without alcohol will cost between CAD 7-20. Drink prices range from CAD 3.50 for a domestic beer to CAD 25 for a bottle of wine. Reservations are recommended on Friday and Saturday nights.

This warm and inviting pub occupies a turn-of-the-century firehouse and plays out the firefighter theme throughout its open and airy interior. The barroom ceiling is a good thirty feet above the hardwood floor; the four other rooms all have balconies overlooking the bar, with separate areas for dining, drinking, pool and darts. Vintage firefighting equipment such as axes, fire-coats and ancient pumps line the walls, while a huge ceramic Dalmatian, mascot of all firefighters, guards the bar. They serve a full compliment of excellent burgers, steaks and other American foods.

The locals consider Hy's a Calgary institution. Dinner for two will run you about fifty dollars though, so it's not for the budget conscious. Richly decorated in reds and gold with opulent carpeting underfoot, Hy's is upscale without being ostentatious. If you are looking to spoil yourself or someone you love, take them to Hy's for some of the best steak in the province. They also do a great job with an array of seafood, chicken and salads, and have an extensive wine menu.

Tony Roma's has several locations in the city, each boasting soft lighting, hardwood floors, lots of plants and attention to detail, making it a great place to bring family and friends for a dose of comfort food. Although they specialize in ribs, you can also choose from an appetizer platter filled with potato skins, chicken wings and deep fried cheese sticks, as well as a variety of salads and steak and chicken entrees—but the flame broiled baby back ribs in tangy barbeque sauce are the biggest hit.

Western Coffee Shop

Friendly Fourth Street diner
2100 4 Street Southwest
Calgary, AB T2S 1W7
Canada
+1 403 229 1505
There are plenty of over-the-top restaurants on hip Fourth Street. This is not one of them. This friendly diner features the kind of food that always comes with fries. The menu, scrawled on numerous chalkboards and bits of paper hanging on the walls, includes all the comfortable diner items: burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast cuisine, and like nearly every other diner in Calgary, offers a few Asian dishes. Unless you count the waitress who whispers "yum-yum" as she delivers your meal, this place is absolutely devoid of frills. What a relief!

Whiskey Creek Saloon and Steakhouse

The good, the bad, and the thirsty
200 Barclay Parade Southwest
Eau Claire Market
Calgary, AB T2P 4R5
Canada
+1 403 262 9378
There is no shortage of Western-themed restaurants in Calgary, but most seem to be either too phony-cowboy (one regularly features rap musicians) or too hick. This Eau Claire saloon manages to find a pleasant middle ground by adopting a "movie-set western" style. In fact the beautiful wooden bar was a set piece from the movie Legends of the Fall. Their beer is fresh and cold and served in wonderfully curvy ergonomic glasses. The menu consists of the sort of steaks, ribs, chicken and burgers Clint Eastwood would probably enjoy.

Wine Gallery,

European wine-bar
315 - 8 Avenue Southwest
Bankers Hall
Calgary, AB T2P 4K1
Canada
+1 403 290 1091
This classy restaurant in Bankers Hall is a perfect place to enjoy a bottle of wine. Subdued lighting, linens and small tables make for intimate dinners, and there is live jazz here on weekends from October to May. The menu features Italian and Californian-influenced cuisine and includes starters (try the pheasant pate), salads, seafood dishes (such as langoustine and sausage jambalaya), steaks, duck and chicken dishes and pasta. As the name of this place suggests, the wine list is impressive: short, but selective, with a focus on Australian wines.

Unlike other dingy basement "cyber cafes" this one is bright, warm and sunny and offers the use of a scanner and color printer for a nominal fee.
