1886 Cafe

Step back in time
187 Barclay Parade Southwest
Calgary, AB T2P 4R5
Canada
+1 403 269 9255
http://www.1886.ca/
The 1886 Café brings nostalgia coupled with great breakfast fare in to the new millennium. Breakfasts include the famous "Kenny's Special": scrambled eggs with cheese, green pepper and mushrooms. The décor is reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century kitchen and harks back to a time when the city of Calgary was nothing more than a scattering of shacks on the riverbank; a basement room is filled with pictures of Calgary in the late 1800s.

Friendly roadhouse

Canada
+1 403 286 4891
This no-frills diner on the Trans-Canada Highway looks like it might blow over in a strong wind. Still, it is a charming place to stop for a roadside feed. Mecca's breakfast menu offers the expected array of eggy morning fare, including the enormous Griz platter: three eggs, ham, sausage, hash browns, pancakes and toast. For lunch and dinner, try a tasty burger or sandwiches. There is little in the way of decor, but since most folks are stopping en route to the majestic Rocky Mountains, nobody seems to mind.

Funky decor
1613 Ninth Street South West
Calgary, AB T2R 1E1

The funky James Bond artwork on the walls of the Beano is a refreshing change from typically sterile coffee shop decor. The café is divided into several sections of four or five tables arranged around a central coffee bar, so that instead of feeling like a bustling cafeteria, the atmosphere is that of a cozy, intimate restaurant. Over ten different coffee blends are served, including Sumatran, Brazilian and Swiss. There are also milkshakes, bagels, fruit pies and a number of baked goods and pastries. If you're looking for lunch, there are also a number of sandwiches featuring ingredients such as artichokes, goat cheese and meatloaf. The clientele is mostly comprised of professionals from downtown and businesspeople from the area. The large windows looking out onto trendy 17th Avenue make this an excellent location for people watching.

There are usually hundreds of little cafes in every city, most of them nearly identical. The Good Earth, however, stands apart in this city. Patrons are assaulted with a solid wall of heavenly aroma as they walk in the door—a mix of fresh baking, crushed coffee beans and a hint of vanilla from the famous steamers. The interior resembles a log cabin, with warm pine paneling on the walls and a loft above for diners who want privacy from the busy main floor. The bulletin boards are a hotbed for fitness enthusiasts, with notices for yoga, martial arts, and aerobics classes and seminars lining the walls. The Rimrock Room at the Palliser Hotel serves quite possibly the best brunch in Calgary, featuring unusual and flavorful cuisine such as roasted curry potatoes, bay scallop ceviche and chipotle rice. There is also a good selection of traditional brunch and dinner fare, as well as desserts prepared by pastry chef Victoria Dodd. The hotel is one of the oldest in the city, and maintains an elegant dining room with courteous service. Hotel patrons form the majority of the diners, but visitors are welcome as well. It is rarely crowded enough to require reservations, but if dining with a large group, it's wise to call in advance.

Take Ten Cafe

Bright and unique diner
304 10 Street Northwest
Calgary, AB T2N 1V8
Canada
+1 403 270 7010
A better than average diner in trendy Kensington, this friendly restaurant offers more than the expected selection of sandwiches and burgers. There is a substantial list of wok works, consisting of Asian inspired stir-fries and curries. The all-day breakfast is a boon for late-risers, especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings when the locals come bleary-eyed to nurse their hangovers with big omelets. Work by local artists hangs on the walls and draws attention away from the rather cheapo plastic laminated tabletops.

Western Coffee Shop

Friendly Fourth Street diner
2100 4 Street Southwest
Calgary, AB T2S 1W7
Canada
+1 403 229 1505
There are plenty of over-the-top restaurants on hip Fourth Street. This is not one of them. This friendly diner features the kind of food that always comes with fries. The menu, scrawled on numerous chalkboards and bits of paper hanging on the walls, includes all the comfortable diner items: burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast cuisine, and like nearly every other diner in Calgary, offers a few Asian dishes. Unless you count the waitress who whispers "yum-yum" as she delivers your meal, this place is absolutely devoid of frills. What a relief!
