Truly great steaks |
2620 32nd Ave NE (Barlow Trail, near the airport) Calgary, AB T1Y 6B8 Canada +1 403 250 6327 http://www.sheraton-calgary.co... |
Hotel restaurants are often seen as the tired domain of charter tour groups and weary business travelers, and rarely a destination for locals. Here you will find a high-end steak house where portions are big and so are the prices, but people who live by expense account and love a carefully grilled piece of Grade A Alberta beef won't go wrong here. Steaks and red wine for power dining |
604 8th Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2P 1G5 Canada +1 403 265 3000 http://www.chophousecalgary.com |
This new stop on the steak and red wine circuit is marketing itself as THE place for a power lunch or dinner, with dry-aged Canadian Angus beef on the menu, and bottles of wine that cost more than what some of the help earns in a week. The young and attractive servers are what you would expect from the local entertainment group that owns this and a nearby Hooters-style cowboy bar. Impress your business clients in their private meeting and wine rooms. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elegant Italian dining |
121 17th Avenue Southeast (Just west of Macleod Trail) Calgary, AB T2G 1H3 Canada +1 403 228 5556 |
When the popular La Chaumiere moved to larger digs down 17th Avenue SW, a new menu and staff sprung up in this elegant little building, offering some of the best Italian cuisine in the city along with wonderfully attentive service. Diners will find most of the classic Italian pasta and meat dishes, but also less familiar dishes like Cappellacci di Pesce. You'll pay more than at many other Italian spots, but the food, service and ambience make it worth the extra cost. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A celebration of steak |
237 8 Avenue Southeast Calgary, AB T2G 5C3 Canada +1 403 264 9494 |
Inhabiting the historic Burns Building, this restaurant is a perfect spot to enjoy Calgary's contribution to world cuisine: fine steaks. The menu features an array of contemporary entrees including rack of lamb, salmon, and chicken breast. The focus here, however, is beef. Drinkwaters offers three different cuts of Alberta AAA Beef in portions ranging from petite 6oz portions to impressive 14oz steaks. The room itself is beautiful with enormous pillars reaching to a high, curved ceiling and the lounge is a classy spot for a bit of spirits. Review © 2007, Wcities |

From the global skillet |
315 8th Avenue Southwest Bankers Hall A1, Level 1 Calgary, AB T2P 1C4 Canada +1 403 265 3275 http://www.earls.ca/LocationLi... |
Despite being hidden away below a giant, elevated pedestrian bridge to downtown's biggest office tower complex, this outlet of a popular regional chain still manages to do a strong lunchtime business. At the Bankers Hall branch, the draws are simple—familiarity and reliability. There are Earl's all over the city and region; and with a largely uniform menu, look and feel, diners know they are going to get good, interesting food at a reasonable price. Many diners go for Earl's 12-inch wood-fired pizzas and their Italian and Asian pastas and sautees. Or they can graze on appetizers, like Gyoza, a plate of Japanese dumplings. The Owl's Nest personifies upscale dining and is located in the heart of downtown Calgary. The restaurant is bright and beautiful with hardwood floors, linen tablecloths and napkins, and beautiful plants and greenery. They offer a delicious brunch on weekends, which includes homemade omelets and hash browns, as well as an assortment of vegetables, soups and baked goods. Bustling business stop |
250 Sixth Avenue Southwest, No. 196 Bow Valley Square Calgary, AB T2P 2H7 Canada +1 403 263 1222 |
Visitors will notice plenty of legal pads and file folders spread on the tables around Pickle Palace because many downtown people work their lunches into meetings here. Located at the southwest base of Bow Valley Square, one of downtown's busiest office complexes, diners get quick service in comfortable surroundings. No fussy food here, with the emphasis on quick-to-grab offerings like burgers (nine different ones), salads (there are 10), and pizzas (16 different kinds). The food is affordable and reliable. Shepherd's pie, anyone? |
255 5th Avenue Southwest Bow Valley Square Calgary, AB T2P 3G6 Canada +1 403 263 7763 |
The view into Royal Duke from inside the pedestrian plaza at Bow Valley Square, a downtown office complex, looks dark, stuffy and less than inviting. But visitors who stick their heads in and adjust their eyes to the dark surroundings find a large, but still cozy restaurant and bar serving British-influenced food and drinks to the business crowd. The menu includes such traditional fare as Bangers and Mash and Shepherd's Pie, but there are also salads and daily pasta specials. The service is friendly and fast. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classy Korean dining |
10 Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T3C 0K1 Canada +1 403 228 1120 |
This very charming cafe on the edge of downtown offers great coffees and lunches in a funky environment. The brick building with its hardwood floors, high ceilings and blue and orange accents exudes friendliness, and large tables outside make for comfortable coffees on sunny days. The menu features healthy sandwiches, pizza "bagelwiches", soup, big salads, including a Crab and Shrimp Caesar with toasted foccacia bread, and crustless quiches. For sipping, there is the regular assortment of espresso drinks, Italian sodas, milk shakes and cold beer. Review © 2007, Wcities |
