Located in the Dominion Building, which was built at the turn of the century, the Auburn Saloon features a grand old staircase and high ceilings and is a popular hangout for the Live Theatre crowd; partly because it is directly across the street from The Epcor Centre for Performing Arts. It was only a matter of time before Victor Choy, proprietor of such trendy bars as The Mercury and Concorde, made his stylish mark on Kensington. The fine-lined woodwork and big windows make this a classier-than-average pub, but it's the menu that truly impresses. This is gourmet pub grub. To go with your beer there are bacon-stuffed burgers with roquefort mayonnaise, sandwiches of pepperoni on rye, baked salmon, and curried chicken salad with peaches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

There is no shortage of Italian restaurants in Calgary, but most are rather nondescript. Bonterra is an elegant exception. The interior is beautiful with huge iron chandeliers, stonework, fresh flowers, a romantic courtyard and a charming Wine Room for private parties. The menu features fine Italian classics such as antipasti, thin-crust pizzas, pasta, risotto, and entrees like osso buco, beef tenderloin and halibut. Cajun Spice |
316 Third Street South East Calgary, AB T2G 2S4 Canada +1 403 264 6419 |
Although the prices are a little expensive, this restaurant makes a strong effort to bring Cajun flavor and culture to Calgary. The decor is a little loud, with lots of dark woodwork that is reminiscent of a set from a Louisiana riverboat movie. The staff is quite friendly and the service prompt. The clientele consists of both businesspeople out for something different and rabid Cajun food fans. There is a smoker in the kitchen, which can smoke-cure an entire pork shoulder for the restaurant's famous North Carolina Pulled Pork sandwich. A meal without alcohol will cost between CAD 7-20. Drink prices range from CAD 3.50 for a domestic beer to CAD 25 for a bottle of wine. Reservations are recommended on Friday and Saturday nights. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Don't let the cheap-looking atmosphere stop you from enjoying the excellent food at the Burger Inn. Located on fashionable Fourth Street, its colorful murals and the smell of vinegar mixed with grilled beef lure diners in to sample the incredible burgers. This restaurant uses only premium meat—bison, turkey, ostrich and beef—in order to make a superior burger. Every burger is grilled, then garnished with fresh lettuce, onion and tomato and served on a thick bun. This turn-of-the-century Victorian mansion was recently restored to its former glory and is one of Calgary's newest theme restaurants. Part of the Fort Calgary Interpretive Center, the house and garden are used for casual dining as well as for hosting wedding receptions, business meetings and corporate retreats. The charming decor and staff uniforms are decidedly historical with an 1890's pioneer focus. The locals consider Hy's a Calgary institution. Dinner for two will run you about fifty dollars though, so it's not for the budget conscious. Richly decorated in reds and gold with opulent carpeting underfoot, Hy's is upscale without being ostentatious. If you are looking to spoil yourself or someone you love, take them to Hy's for some of the best steak in the province. They also do a great job with an array of seafood, chicken and salads, and have an extensive wine menu. Review © 2007, Wcities |

We do not know who the monk is or why he went blind, but we do know this: the Blind Monk offers some great jazz and blues. This contemporary nightclub also offers sports-related diversions like a pool table, large screen televisions, not to mention the soft, comfortable chairs. The front windows open in the warmer months, adding a nice café-type ambience. They offer a number of vegetarian dishes as well as burgers, chicken wings, spareribs and pizza. A place for ribs |
3010 23rd Street NE Calgary, AB T2E 8R7 Canada +1 403 242 7427 http://www.tonyromas.com |
Tony Roma's has several locations in the city, each boasting soft lighting, hardwood floors, lots of plants and attention to detail, making it a great place to bring family and friends for a dose of comfort food. Although they specialize in ribs, you can also choose from an appetizer platter filled with potato skins, chicken wings and deep fried cheese sticks, as well as a variety of salads and steak and chicken entrees—but the flame broiled baby back ribs in tangy barbeque sauce are the biggest hit. Great little European style cafe |
1209A 1 Street Southwest Calgary, AB T2R 0V3 Canada +1 403 234 7447 |
Let Vincent Van Gogh himself watch over you as you relax in this laid-back, European style cafe. Enjoy the comfort of couch-dining while taking in the interesting collection of artwork, including, of course, a portrait of Van Gogh. The fireplace adds to the warm and cozy ambience. Souvlaki, pizza and salads are just some of the items presented; the roast potatoes are a must. A selection of appetizers is available, as are a tempting assortment of desserts to enjoy with your coffee. The bar is fully licensed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Food inspired by the Rockies |
2417-4th Street Southwest (Cliff Bungalow - Mission) Calgary, AB T2S 1X5 Canada +1 403 228 9113 http://www.wildwoodgrill.ca/ |
Canadians struggle at times to define their national cuisine, fumbling away about cod, fiddleheads, maple syrup and tourtiere. But a relatively new spot at the end of trendy Fourth Street SW is making its stand on the notion of contemporary Canadian cuisine, drawing from the wilds of the nearby Canadian Rockies. A run through the moderately priced menu reveals everything from buffalo and caribou to lamb and Woodland rabbit. Review © 2007, Wcities |
