The funky James Bond artwork on the walls of the Beano is a refreshing change from typically sterile coffee shop decor. The café is divided into several sections of four or five tables arranged around a central coffee bar, so that instead of feeling like a bustling cafeteria, the atmosphere is that of a cozy, intimate restaurant. Over ten different coffee blends are served, including Sumatran, Brazilian and Swiss. There are also milkshakes, bagels, fruit pies and a number of baked goods and pastries. If you're looking for lunch, there are also a number of sandwiches featuring ingredients such as artichokes, goat cheese and meatloaf. The clientele is mostly comprised of professionals from downtown and businesspeople from the area. Although some of downtown Calgary's office towers are actually taller, the Calgary Tower remains the city's most distinctive landmark. Officially opened in 1968, it remains a popular visitor attraction, providing a panoramic view of the mountains to the west and the surrounding foothills and prairie. On the observation deck there is access to binoculars, multimedia information kiosks and the thrilling Glass Floor Experience. The dining room rotates, allowing visitors the chance to relax with a meal while viewing the entire city from their window-side tables at the Panorama Dining Room. This turn-of-the-century Victorian mansion was recently restored to its former glory and is one of Calgary's newest theme restaurants. Part of the Fort Calgary Interpretive Center, the house and garden are used for casual dining as well as for hosting wedding receptions, business meetings and corporate retreats. The charming decor and staff uniforms are decidedly historical with an 1890's pioneer focus. Steak, garden salads, pasta dishes and a good selection of wines form the majority of the menu, but the food takes backseat to the atmosphere. There are numerous bar-sized playing tables, all rented on a clock. Some 14 TVs blast the latest hockey and football games, and a DJ has music constantly playing. There are three meal choices offered daily, along with a full selection of wines. In order to get a table, you must book at least a week in advance, because seats are in high demand.
