A taste of Paris |
506 24th Avenue South West Calgary, AB T2S 0K4 +1 403 209 0363 |
The chefs at the Brasserie are some of the most talented in the city, putting together elegant French dinners. Famous for its flambeaus and seafood, the French atmosphere is played up as much as possible, with imported Parisian decor and servers with French accents charming the customers. The wine list has some North American stock, but the emphasis is definitely on well-aged Old World classics. The Rack of Lamb Provencale and Duck Confit are said to be exceptional, and the dessert menu, featuring Tarte Tatin and ice cream, makes for a fitting end to a well-prepared and well-presented meal. Dark wood paneling and hardwood floors set a classy mood at Caesar's; the service is impeccable and the food is mouthwatering. Because of its popularity, reservations are recommended. The food is a little pricey, but if you like Alberta Beef, this is a great place to enjoy it. You can also choose from an array of other entrees including ribs, chicken, and soups and salads. They have a large selection of both red and white wines, and private banquet facilities are available. Valet parking begins every day at 5pm. Review © 2007, Wcities |
Expensive but worth it |
100 La Caille Place Southwest (corner of 1 Avenue and 7 Street Southwest) Calgary, AB T2P 5E2 +1 403 262 5554 http://www.lacaille.ca gm@lacaille.ca |
Overlooking the banks of the Bow River, La Caille is a tad expensive, but well worth it, especially if romance is on the agenda. You can choose to sit upstairs in their formal dining room or downstairs by the large stone fireplace. The food is French Continental with offerings such as shrimp, scallops and mussels in a white wine sauce. They also serve game, pasta and beef for their entrees. Review © 2007, Wcities |
Classic, exotic French cuisine |
139 17 Avenue Southwest (between First and Second streets Southwest) Calgary, AB T2S 0A1 +1 403 228 5690 |
Long Calgary's most prestigious French restaurant, this is where the Mercedes-Benz crowd heads for power dinners and special occasions. The menu is an exotic blend of the traditional and the adventurous, such as roasted breast of pheasant or sautéed ostrich medallions. Set in brick and stone quarters, the restaurant also features a wine menu with more than 450 selections. The decor offers an elegant chateau-room feel, with meals served on fine bone china and wine in crystal glasses. Do not show up wearing jeans if you want to get past the front door. Jojo's Paris style bistro offers romance and privacy, with reasonably priced French food. Entrees include beef tournedos with peppercorn sauce and lemon chicken, mussels Florentine, and sea bass cooked with lemon. There are beautiful white linen tablecloths and candles at each table, as well as a dozen posters of Paris scattered throughout. The waiters speak French, which adds to the ambience, and the service is courteous and quick. Their dessert menu includes chocolate mousse and crème brulee and they have a large selection of red and white house wines. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Southern France and Spain unite |
2215-33 Avenue Southwest, No. 101 Calgary, AB T2T 1Z9 +1 403 249 1194 |
If you are hankering for something different, like vegetarian couscous or mussels marinara, then this is the place for you. Trocadero specializes in food from Southern France and Spain and freely blends the two food cultures, so expect the unexpected. Try the mussel soup or the paella; for the culinary adventurer they offer something called a "rabbit casserole." You can expect excellent value and there is plenty of free parking out back. The service is fast and friendly, yet they take the time to make you feel very special. Review © 2007, Wcities |
