If you enjoy the robust flavor of garlic, check out the signature dish of a restaurant famed for its indulgence in the healthy herb. Its steak—marinated, saturated, garnished and sauced with garlic—is sure to overpower even the strongest breath-freshener. The tidy and welcoming restaurant is outfitted in a traditional Italian style, with antique wine bottles intertwined among the vines lining the walls. For those who aren't enthusiastic about garlic, there are a number of unseasoned dishes and desserts on the menu. Even the air inside, however, is saturated with the sweet and strong scent of the "stinking rose."

There is no shortage of Italian restaurants in Calgary, but most are rather nondescript. Bonterra is an elegant exception. The interior is beautiful with huge iron chandeliers, stonework, fresh flowers, a romantic courtyard and a charming Wine Room for private parties. The menu features fine Italian classics such as antipasti, thin-crust pizzas, pasta, risotto, and entrees like osso buco, beef tenderloin and halibut. Each menu item includes wine suggestions and the wine list itself is a joy: extensive, eclectic and full of tasting notes. Bonterra is cellular-free: another joy.

Brezza Ristorante

Italian that feels like home
990-1st Avenue Northeast
Calgary, AB T2E 8J3

Most houses-turned-restaurants hide their origins well, but this popular and classic Italian restaurant still has first-timers double-taking at what looks like someone's bungalow. The homey feeling is carried indoors, nurtured by an ever-present owner and staff who take pains to make diners feel welcome. People keep coming back because the prices are reasonable, the portions serious and the food well prepared and tasty. The house fettuccini is a perennial favourite. There's a private room downstairs for special gatherings, and plenty of parking in the neighbourhood.

This charming cafe features classic Arabic dishes. Romantika offers appetizers such as baba ghanny and baked garlic shrimp, salads, pita sandwiches including falafel and donairs, and pastas like baked lasagna. There is also a lengthy pizza menu with the standard choice of toppings. The restaurant itself is bright and bistro-like with plenty of light, but the bare walls could use some colour. Still this is a fine place for satisfying pizza, pita or pasta cravings.

Giant bottles of the house white line the booths at this boisterous and casual Italian eatery, which is part of a small but growing regional chain. The emphasis is on moderately priced pastas and a wide range of appetizers, but many people head right to the menu's pizza section for everything from traditional four-cheese numbers to offbeat tandoori chicken toppings, most for less than CAD10. The refined atmosphere here seems like an injustice to the food, which is served in such large portions that a lumberjack would be hard-pressed to finish it in one sitting. Seafood is the house specialty, prepared using the same spicy Italian herbs that make its pastas so interesting and flavourful. The Clam Linguini is especially rich and creamy, and takes full advantage of the chef's seafood mastery. It's hard to decide whether or not Quizno's is more than a chain fast food joint but actually a gourmand's treasure. The food is definitely fast, but the baked Italian sub sandwiches are of a quality to delight even the most discerning of diners. Thick, Italian-style loaves are sliced in half and layered with a choice of meats, cheeses and sauces before being oven baked. They are then stuffed with cold vegetables and served hot with pickled peppers on the side. The spicy fillings lend these subs a zest that lingers well after the meal is done. As you enter The Roxbury the first thing you notice is their beautiful foyer and majestic, old-style staircase. Relax in one of the comfortable, deep armchairs or choose a more formal, sit-down table; play pool or a game of darts. This cocktail bar and supper club has an impressive list of appetizers including calamari, chicken wings, California salad rolls and chicken dumplings. They also offer entrees such as grilled chicken breast with prawns and an excellent grilled Atlantic salmon. Their wine and martini selection is particularly impressive.

San Remo Ristorante

Pasta in the cold
3574 Garrison Gate Southwest
Calgary, AB T2T 6E4
Canada
+1 403 685 5727
Located among the din of bustling shops at Garrison Woods, this Italian restaurant exudes a certain warmth that starts off with its signage. Olive colored walls, marble-laid floors and wrought iron chandeliers have an endearing Italian feel. The restaurant mostly focuses on pasta dishes, but most of the dishes are worth as try, such as the Lobster Quesadilla with soft, smoked Gouda, a thick caramelized apple, the Prawn and Brie sandwich on Toasted Foccacia or the spicy Crab and Whiskey Bisque. The dessert menu is as sumptuous with the likes of Tiramisu and Toffee Bread Pudding and a very different ice cream - filled crepes with strawberries and white pepper. The service may be abrupt but the food makes up for it.

The menu and daily specials at this hot spot are created by one of the region's top chefs. The varied selections feature the best of the predictable and the unusual, including Risotto of Chanterelle, butternut squash and ruby chard. The Italian-inspired market cuisine is a favorite of the loyal downtown business lunch and pre-concert crowd. The décor still holds a hint of its roots—the building originally housed the old Dominion Bank. By combining the warmth of the original stone walls and wood floors with a few modern touches, a hip and elegant dining atmosphere was created.
