Bass Brothers Beer House and Grill

Comfy pub, stylish fare
1136 Kensington Road NW
Calgary, AB T2N 3P3
Canada
+1 403 283 7443
It was only a matter of time before Victor Choy, proprietor of such trendy bars as The Mercury and Concorde, made his stylish mark on Kensington. The fine-lined woodwork and big windows make this a classier-than-average pub, but it's the menu that truly impresses. This is gourmet pub grub. To go with your beer there are bacon-stuffed burgers with roquefort mayonnaise, sandwiches of pepperoni on rye, baked salmon, and curried chicken salad with peaches.

Bottlescrew Bill's Pub

South Korea makes beer?
140 - 10 Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2R 0A3
Canada
+1 403 263 7900
http://www.bottlescrewbill.com
With a list 200 beers deep, Bill's boasts Calgary's largest selection of suds. The "Around-the-World-in-80-Beers" program is a journey—complete with souvenir passport—through 80 import beers from such obscure beer-producing nations as Slovakia and Trinidad. The cozy surroundings, including a warm fireplace room, ensure that your drinking is done in comfort. And if that third bottle of Polish brew has got you hungry, Bill's menu includes tasty pub fare such as, ahem, sautéed bull's testicles.

Casa de la Salsa

Extra cactus paddles, please
2218 Ave SW
Calgary, AB T2P 1B7
Canada
+1 403 264 4777
Since salsa culture has become Calgary's latest craze, the owners of Casa must be smiling smugly: they have been offering the food, music and spirits of Latin America for years. The large menu includes classics such as ceviche, sopes, burritos, and steak and seafood dishes. There are also Italian dishes with a Latin American influence, such as fettuccini with cactus paddles and pizzas topped with chayote squash. There is live music here on weekend nights, and enough tequila and fruity cocktails available to inspire some hot dancing.

Homestead Restaurant & Pizza Place

Heading home after a long night
1410 17th Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2T 0C3
Canada
+1 403 244 4811
The Homestead is a casual, down-home restaurant (hence the name) that offers "comfort foods" such as burgers, fries, pizza and nachos. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, music videos and sports play on the televisions and they offer a large and eclectic menu with everything from sandwiches to fish and chips to an all-day breakfast. There are a couple of booths to choose from and when the bars along 17th Avenue close, The Homestead fills up.

Molly Malone's Irish Pub

Warm and friendly
1153 Kensington Crescent North West
Calgary, AB T2N 1X7
Canada
+1 403 296 3200
With the startling number of Celtic pubs sprouting up in town you'd think Calgary's civic planning department is run by the Guinness family. Still, no one is complaining. Molly Malone's is one of the better new pubs in the trendy Kensington neighbourhood. Subdued lighting, intimate booths and a huge bar make for a relaxed pint, and if you are having trouble deciding, the ubiquitous Guinness-propaganda on the walls offers some suggestion. The menu features a variety of beer-inspired pub fare such as Smithwicks fish and chips and ploughman's sandwich.

Singapore Sam's

For nocturnal chop-sticking
555-11th Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2R 1P6
Canada
+1 403 234 8088
http://www.singaporesams.com/
For many Calgarians, a lifelong love of Asian food began with a dinner at Sam's. This stylish restaurant features dishes representing a wide range of Asian cuisines. You can find Peking, Cantonese, and Thai dishes on their extensive menu. There is also a Mongolian-style grill where diners assemble their own veggie, meat and sauce combinations and are charged by weight. Lunch and dinner buffets are available. There is nothing daring on the menu, but all the familiar favourites are here. Sam's is open late for midnight ginger beef cravings.

Urban Rice

So what if its late?
834 5th Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2P 3G6
Canada
+1 403 263 1984
This new addition to the late night scene of the city is located in the pretty downtown area. Walk in after a long day or just for a pleasant change from the regular routine. Tunes of your choice are played for you to sing along with; yes, two karaoke bars are located on-site! Now for the food and drinks, bar tenders mix up great mood enhancers for you to indulge in. And to go with them are chicken wings and other such light snacks. Late open hours and the prime location make this a popular spot among the night-owls.

Van Gogh Cafe

Great little European style cafe
1209A 1 Street Southwest
Calgary, AB T2R 0V3
Canada
+1 403 234 7447
Let Vincent Van Gogh himself watch over you as you relax in this laid-back, European style cafe. Enjoy the comfort of couch-dining while taking in the interesting collection of artwork, including, of course, a portrait of Van Gogh. The fireplace adds to the warm and cozy ambience. Souvlaki, pizza and salads are just some of the items presented; the roast potatoes are a must. A selection of appetizers is available, as are a tempting assortment of desserts to enjoy with your coffee. The bar is fully licensed.

Whiskey Creek Saloon and Steakhouse

The good, the bad, and the thirsty
200 Barclay Parade Southwest
Eau Claire Market
Calgary, AB T2P 4R5
Canada
+1 403 262 9378
There is no shortage of Western-themed restaurants in Calgary, but most seem to be either too phony-cowboy (one regularly features rap musicians) or too hick. This Eau Claire saloon manages to find a pleasant middle ground by adopting a "movie-set western" style. In fact the beautiful wooden bar was a set piece from the movie Legends of the Fall. Their beer is fresh and cold and served in wonderfully curvy ergonomic glasses. The menu consists of the sort of steaks, ribs, chicken and burgers Clint Eastwood would probably enjoy.

Wicked Wedge Pizza Company

Great pizza for late nights
618 - 17th Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2E 1M3
Canada
+1 403 228 1024
http://www.thewickedwedge.com/
Its reputation as one of the best places for a late-night slice means that "The Wedge" is jammed in the wee hours of the morning. Three herb-crusted varieties are featured daily, including such creations as falafel veggie, chicken fajita, and the garden groovy. There is very little seating here—just a few chairs inside and a couple benches on the street, but most of the clientele are looking for a slice to go anyway. Delivery is available anywhere in Calgary.
