A taste of Paris |
506 24th Avenue South West Calgary, AB T2S 0K4 Canada +1 403 209 0363 |
The chefs at the Brasserie are some of the most talented in the city, putting together elegant French dinners. Famous for its flambeaus and seafood, the French atmosphere is played up as much as possible, with imported Parisian decor and servers with French accents charming the customers. The wine list has some North American stock, but the emphasis is definitely on well-aged Old World classics. The Rack of Lamb Provencale and Duck Confit are said to be exceptional, and the dessert menu, featuring Tarte Tatin and ice cream, makes for a fitting end to a well-prepared and well-presented meal. Italian that feels like home |
990-1st Avenue Northeast Calgary, AB T2E 8J3 Canada +1 403 262 6230 |
Most houses-turned-restaurants hide their origins well, but this popular and classic Italian restaurant still has first-timers double-taking at what looks like someone's bungalow. The homey feeling is carried indoors, nurtured by an ever-present owner and staff who take pains to make diners feel welcome. People keep coming back because the prices are reasonable, the portions serious and the food well prepared and tasty. The house fettuccini is a perennial favourite. Here you will find a high-end steak house where portions are big and so are the prices, but people who live by expense account and love a carefully grilled piece of Grade A Alberta beef won't go wrong here. This turn-of-the-century Victorian mansion was recently restored to its former glory and is one of Calgary's newest theme restaurants. Part of the Fort Calgary Interpretive Center, the house and garden are used for casual dining as well as for hosting wedding receptions, business meetings and corporate retreats. The charming decor and staff uniforms are decidedly historical with an 1890's pioneer focus. Steak, garden salads, pasta dishes and a good selection of wines form the majority of the menu, but the food takes backseat to the atmosphere. Theatre companies occasionally use the Dean House for "Mystery Dinners," where the diners take part in staged murder mysteries. Reservations are recommended. Review © 2007, Wcities |
