If your musical taste favors the tweed and you hanker to kick up your heels a bit, head down to the Atlantic Trap & Grill Pub, where they have a large dance floor and feature live Celtic music every weekend from 8pm until midnight. They also offer some of the best seafood (including their famous beer-battered 'fish and chips') in town: Atlantic lobster, mussels in tomato sauce, a seafood bisque and garlic prawns—all at reasonable prices—and, they have a good assortment of beer on tap.

Mona's Kitchen

So that's what she's smiling at.
320 9 Avenue Southwest
Calgary, AB T2P 4J5
Canada
+1 403 290 1090
This restaurant in Bankers Hall is a unique place for lunch, and is a popular noon-hour stop for downtown's office dwellers. The cuisine is relatively simple: sandwiches, daily soups, gourmet salads, and hot specials; everything is made fresh and looks gorgeous. They also serve delicious coffees and claim to make Calgary's best cappuccino. Service is cafeteria-style but the wooden tables and chairs and stylish decor make this a cafeteria with class. The giant portrait of Mona Lisa kindly overlooking the place makes diners feel they are in good hands.

Add one of Schwartzie's custom "schmears," consisting of cream cheeses with flavours like salsa and black peppercorn, for a filling meal. Schwartie's also offers "bagelwiches," panini sandwiches, fresh soups and chili. Comfortable stools and friendly staff make this bagel shop worth a noon visit.

Silver Inn

Peking cuisine that won't burn your tongue
2702 Centre Street North
Calgary, AB T2E 2V6
Canada
+1 403 276 6711
This is one of Calgary's oldest and best Peking restaurants. It has been around for over two decades, and longevity in restaurants can only be attributed to one thing—great food! They have an extensive menu, which includes grilled dumplings, chicken and cashews in yellow bean sauce, hot and sour soup, and, of course, the delectable ginger fried beef. They are licensed for beer and wine and offer a less spicy version of Peking cuisine than most other Chinese restaurants.

Western Coffee Shop

Friendly Fourth Street diner
2100 4 Street Southwest
Calgary, AB T2S 1W7
Canada
+1 403 229 1505
There are plenty of over-the-top restaurants on hip Fourth Street. This is not one of them. This friendly diner features the kind of food that always comes with fries. The menu, scrawled on numerous chalkboards and bits of paper hanging on the walls, includes all the comfortable diner items: burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast cuisine, and like nearly every other diner in Calgary, offers a few Asian dishes. Unless you count the waitress who whispers "yum-yum" as she delivers your meal, this place is absolutely devoid of frills. What a relief!
