Craving falafel? |
2208 4th St SW Calgary, AB T2S 1W9 Canada +1 403 541 1189 |
This Lebanese restaurant is perfect for a midday falafel sandwich or evening couscous feed. The menu features a large selection of traditional Middle Eastern specialties such as mezza, kabobs, lamb chops, shwarma, and baklava. There are also Lebanese twists on western dishes: Aida's Caesar salad is tossed with pita chips and orange blossom water flavours her lemonade. Those unfamiliar with Lebanese cuisine need not worry: the menu gives detailed descriptions of each dish to assist neophyte diners who don't know their rookaak from their tabouleh. If you enjoy the robust flavor of garlic, check out the signature dish of a restaurant famed for its indulgence in the healthy herb. Its steak—marinated, saturated, garnished and sauced with garlic—is sure to overpower even the strongest breath-freshener. The tidy and welcoming restaurant is outfitted in a traditional Italian style, with antique wine bottles intertwined among the vines lining the walls. For those who aren't enthusiastic about garlic, there are a number of unseasoned dishes and desserts on the menu. Even the air inside, however, is saturated with the sweet and strong scent of the "stinking rose." Review © 2007, Wcities |

Satisfying vegetarian cuisine |

The spare, elegant lines of Buddha's provide few distractions from the wide variety of Asian-influenced vegetarian dishes on its menu. About 20 tables dressed in simple red and white provide ample room for up to 100 people to enjoy many pure vegetarian meals, some of which feature meat substitutes so convincing in flavor and texture, you would swear it was the real thing. The servers are prompt and efficient, and customers never have to wait long to find tables or order meals. Because every meal is vegetarian or vegan, prices for comparable servings are less expensive than in restaurants with meat in their dishes. The funky James Bond artwork on the walls of the Beano is a refreshing change from typically sterile coffee shop decor. The café is divided into several sections of four or five tables arranged around a central coffee bar, so that instead of feeling like a bustling cafeteria, the atmosphere is that of a cozy, intimate restaurant. Over ten different coffee blends are served, including Sumatran, Brazilian and Swiss. There are also milkshakes, bagels, fruit pies and a number of baked goods and pastries. If you're looking for lunch, there are also a number of sandwiches featuring ingredients such as artichokes, goat cheese and meatloaf. The clientele is mostly comprised of professionals from downtown and businesspeople from the area. This friendly bar is a favourite of local musicians as a place to perform and patronize. The menu features classic pub fare such as sandwiches, burgers and chicken wings; the beer is tall, cold and reasonablet. They also offer a brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10a-2p. Restaurants come and go, but the Keg chain has been around for more than a generation as a reliable place for a good steak, devoid of the stuffiness of more traditional steakhouses. Known for a casual atmosphere, table help who insist you know their names and big salad bars, this particular outlet holds true to form. It is set in what looks to passersby like a classic Western ranch house and carries that homey (though bustling) feel inside. Alberta prides itself on its beef, and that's the mainstay of the menu, with filet mignon, New York cuts and prime rib, all at moderate prices. There are two more Keg outlets in Calgary, plus two in Banff. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Leo Fu's specialties are Szechuan dumplings and ginger fried beef; the secret of their special beef, they say, lies in the fact that they only deep-fry the beef for seconds before adding generous spices and sauce. Although the setting is casual dining, the food is definitely not. Their dining room seats about 65 people, and the service is fast and efficient. On the stomping heels of Riverdance, Irish pubs are a growth industry. This latest pub is also the first one located well outside the city core. This two-level space along one of Calgary's main drags is big on atmosphere and beer, with regular live Celtic music performances and Guinness, Harp and Kilkenny on tap. Curiously, the moderately priced menu wanders the globe from New Orleans to Athens, and could arguably benefit from some focus. There is an elevated patio for warm summer nights. We do not know who the monk is or why he went blind, but we do know this: the Blind Monk offers some great jazz and blues. This contemporary nightclub also offers sports-related diversions like a pool table, large screen televisions, not to mention the soft, comfortable chairs. The front windows open in the warmer months, adding a nice café-type ambience. They offer a number of vegetarian dishes as well as burgers, chicken wings, spareribs and pizza. Small but great |
209 1st Steet South East Calgary, AB T2G 2G3 Canada +1 403 265 5452 |
This tiny restaurant across the street from the Government Building makes delicious Vietnamese food and submarine sandwiches. It is a pleasant change from the run-of-the-mill, and you can choose from a variety of dishes. The submarine sandwiches are their biggest sellers, and you can choose from sate beef, chicken, combo or clubhouse. If you like food with a little bite to it, ask them to add a healthy squirt of chili sauce. All this is available for CAD 3.50. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Southern France and Spain unite |
2215-33 Avenue Southwest, No. 101 Calgary, AB T2T 1Z9 Canada +1 403 249 1194 |
If you are hankering for something different, like vegetarian couscous or mussels marinara, then this is the place for you. Trocadero specializes in food from Southern France and Spain and freely blends the two food cultures, so expect the unexpected. Try the mussel soup or the paella; for the culinary adventurer they offer something called a "rabbit casserole." You can expect excellent value and there is plenty of free parking out back. The service is fast and friendly, yet they take the time to make you feel very special. Review © 2007, Wcities |

They also offer noodle and pasta dishes like baked spaghetti and lasagna. If you're looking for something a little different try their steak Neptune, stuffed chicken breast or one of their many seafood dishes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Friendly Fourth Street diner |
2100 4 Street Southwest Calgary, AB T2S 1W7 Canada +1 403 229 1505 |
There are plenty of over-the-top restaurants on hip Fourth Street. This is not one of them. This friendly diner features the kind of food that always comes with fries. The menu, scrawled on numerous chalkboards and bits of paper hanging on the walls, includes all the comfortable diner items: burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast cuisine, and like nearly every other diner in Calgary, offers a few Asian dishes. Unless you count the waitress who whispers "yum-yum" as she delivers your meal, this place is absolutely devoid of frills. What a relief! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Authentic Caribbean food and atmosphere |
325 17 Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2S 0A5 Canada +1 403 209 0977 |
This oddly-named restaurant and bar features affordable Caribbean cuisine. The interior is reminiscent of an authentic African chop-bar with bright blue walls, slightly rickety furniture and a large loud television. The menu features appetizers such as salt fish cakes and salads and main course items include Calypso steak, curries of beef, chicken and goat, jerk chicken and something called "Legs from Heaven." Portions are generous and entrees include piles of rice or yams. Review © 2007, Wcities |
