If you enjoy the robust flavor of garlic, check out the signature dish of a restaurant famed for its indulgence in the healthy herb. Its steak—marinated, saturated, garnished and sauced with garlic—is sure to overpower even the strongest breath-freshener. The tidy and welcoming restaurant is outfitted in a traditional Italian style, with antique wine bottles intertwined among the vines lining the walls. For those who aren't enthusiastic about garlic, there are a number of unseasoned dishes and desserts on the menu. Even the air inside, however, is saturated with the sweet and strong scent of the "stinking rose."

Over ten different coffee blends are served, including Sumatran, Brazilian and Swiss. There are also milkshakes, bagels, fruit pies and a number of baked goods and pastries. If you're looking for lunch, there are also a number of sandwiches featuring ingredients such as artichokes, goat cheese and meatloaf. You will never get bored looking at the walls in Jack Astor's; they are covered in thousands of framed photographs of everything from zoo animals to football players to racecars. The service is always prompt, the food is cheap, served steakhouse style and servers make a sincere effort to ensure that everyone has a good time. The bar serves the traditional assortment of liquors, including a wicked spiked coffee. On weekend evenings the place is packed, so make your reservations early in the day.

Authentic Korean means cooking your own meal right at your table: each of the tables has a built-in barbecue; the menu also features hotpots, which are whole meals cooked at the table. Choose from either a private booth or a four-seat table—the ambiance is warm and intimate and the stained glass windows add a touch of color. The private rooms can accommodate 12-15 people—reserve one if you are bringing a crowd. You can enjoy their buffet from Monday to Friday, or you can order off the main menu.

Its title sounds like a wisecrack name for a Gen-X cocktail bar, but the concoctions here will leave patrons wobbly with rapture. This is the city's first dedicated juice and smoothie bar, with blenders spinning up a wide selection of healthy, often filling drinks. Along with frozen fruits and low-fat yogurts, the smoothies also feature blended-in boosts for your brain, energy level or immune system. There are also shots of freshly squeezed wheatgrass, though it's an acquired taste. A small selection of healthy sandwiches is available, along with soup and chili.

Restaurants come and go, but the Keg chain has been around for more than a generation as a reliable place for a good steak, devoid of the stuffiness of more traditional steakhouses. Known for a casual atmosphere, table help who insist you know their names and big salad bars, this particular outlet holds true to form. It is set in what looks to passersby like a classic Western ranch house and carries that homey (though bustling) feel inside. Alberta prides itself on its beef, and that's the mainstay of the menu, with filet mignon, New York cuts and prime rib, all at moderate prices. There are two more Keg outlets in Calgary, plus two in Banff.

One of the first attempts at capturing the look, feel and sensibilities of a small village country pub in the U.K., this stop has remained popular for more than 15 years. Located just a few blocks south of downtown in a rambling old building (legend has it as a former funeral home), there are three distinct bar areas with booths and tables. There are also comfy couches, some near fireplaces. Come summer, there's also a heated patio area. There are some 30 beers, many of them imported and starting at about CAD 5 a pint. The menu, meanwhile, tilts towards finger foods, burgers and sandwiches—though the latter can be as adventurous as turkey, strawberry and Brie on sourdough (CAD 9).

Located among the din of bustling shops at Garrison Woods, this Italian restaurant exudes a certain warmth that starts off with its signage. Olive colored walls, marble-laid floors and wrought iron chandeliers have an endearing Italian feel. The restaurant mostly focuses on pasta dishes, but most of the dishes are worth as try, such as the Lobster Quesadilla with soft, smoked Gouda, a thick caramelized apple, the Prawn and Brie sandwich on Toasted Foccacia or the spicy Crab and Whiskey Bisque. The dessert menu is as sumptuous with the likes of Tiramisu and Toffee Bread Pudding and a very different ice cream - filled crepes with strawberries and white pepper. The service may be abrupt but the food makes up for it.

The Taj Mahal has been serving Indian food to Calgarians for over 26 years. Their secret, say the owners, lies not in the amount of spices but rather the exotic interaction of these spices. In other words, the food is not overpowering or acutely intense, but delicate and tasty. There are a lot of golds and reds used to create a warm ambience. Special VIP rooms are available that can hold up to 150 people.

Western Coffee Shop

Friendly Fourth Street diner
2100 4 Street Southwest
Calgary, AB T2S 1W7
Canada
+1 403 229 1505
There are plenty of over-the-top restaurants on hip Fourth Street. This is not one of them. This friendly diner features the kind of food that always comes with fries. The menu, scrawled on numerous chalkboards and bits of paper hanging on the walls, includes all the comfortable diner items: burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast cuisine, and like nearly every other diner in Calgary, offers a few Asian dishes. Unless you count the waitress who whispers "yum-yum" as she delivers your meal, this place is absolutely devoid of frills. What a relief!

This oddly-named restaurant and bar features affordable Caribbean cuisine. The interior is reminiscent of an authentic African chop-bar with bright blue walls, slightly rickety furniture and a large loud television. The menu features appetizers such as salt fish cakes and salads and main course items include Calypso steak, curries of beef, chicken and goat, jerk chicken and something called "Legs from Heaven." Portions are generous and entrees include piles of rice or yams.

Wicked Wedge Pizza Company

Great pizza for late nights

Its reputation as one of the best places for a late-night slice means that "The Wedge" is jammed in the wee hours of the morning. Three herb-crusted varieties are featured daily, including such creations as falafel veggie, chicken fajita, and the garden groovy. There is very little seating here—just a few chairs inside and a couple benches on the street, but most of the clientele are looking for a slice to go anyway. Delivery is available anywhere in Calgary.

Canadians struggle at times to define their national cuisine, fumbling away about cod, fiddleheads, maple syrup and tourtiere. But a relatively new spot at the end of trendy Fourth Street SW is making its stand on the notion of contemporary Canadian cuisine, drawing from the wilds of the nearby Canadian Rockies. A run through the moderately priced menu reveals everything from buffalo and caribou to lamb and Woodland rabbit.
