http://www.bbqonthebow.com/
This unique event is a combination of free family entertainment and a barbecue competition. For two days in September, Prince's Island Park is filled with the sound of music and the tempting smell of barbecue sauce. Several cooking teams put their grill skills to the test as they prepare fantastic food for judging. There is a children's area, roving performers, dancing and much more. Plenty of food is available, including a chance to feast on the creations of competing chefs. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged; proceeds support local charities.

Bass Brothers Beer House and Grill

Comfy pub, stylish fare
1136 Kensington Road NW
Calgary, AB T2N 3P3
Canada
+1 403 283 7443
It was only a matter of time before Victor Choy, proprietor of such trendy bars as The Mercury and Concorde, made his stylish mark on Kensington. The fine-lined woodwork and big windows make this a classier-than-average pub, but it's the menu that truly impresses. This is gourmet pub grub. To go with your beer there are bacon-stuffed burgers with roquefort mayonnaise, sandwiches of pepperoni on rye, baked salmon, and curried chicken salad with peaches.

Bert's Mountain Mecca Cafe

Friendly roadhouse
10231 West Valley Road Southwest
Calgary, AB T3B 5T2
Canada
+1 403 286 4891
This no-frills diner on the Trans-Canada Highway looks like it might blow over in a strong wind. Still, it is a charming place to stop for a roadside feed. Mecca's breakfast menu offers the expected array of eggy morning fare, including the enormous Griz platter: three eggs, ham, sausage, hash browns, pancakes and toast. For lunch and dinner, try a tasty burger or sandwiches. There is little in the way of decor, but since most folks are stopping en route to the majestic Rocky Mountains, nobody seems to mind.

Canada

http://www.bonterra.ca/
There is no shortage of Italian restaurants in Calgary, but most are rather nondescript. Bonterra is an elegant exception. The interior is beautiful with huge iron chandeliers, stonework, fresh flowers, a romantic courtyard and a charming Wine Room for private parties. The menu features fine Italian classics such as antipasti, thin-crust pizzas, pasta, risotto, and entrees like osso buco, beef tenderloin and halibut. Each menu item includes wine suggestions and the wine list itself is a joy: extensive, eclectic and full of tasting notes. Bonterra is cellular-free: another joy.

This old meat-packing plant has retained its loading dock facade. The interiors too, go with the outside, and have plastic tablecloths and cheap furniture. If you are looking for a posh joint, this is not it. But the food is great. On weekends, treat your senses to some jazz and blues while you delve into some Smoked Meat and fish. The staff is helpful and will help you choose sauces and spices.

With a list 200 beers deep, Bill's boasts Calgary's largest selection of suds. The "Around-the-World-in-80-Beers" program is a journey—complete with souvenir passport—through 80 import beers from such obscure beer-producing nations as Slovakia and Trinidad. The cozy surroundings, including a warm fireplace room, ensure that your drinking is done in comfort. And if that third bottle of Polish brew has got you hungry, Bill's menu includes tasty pub fare such as, ahem, sautéed bull's testicles.

Calgary, AB T2S 1W5
Canada
+1 403 244 9293
Don't let the cheap-looking atmosphere stop you from enjoying the excellent food at the Burger Inn. Located on fashionable Fourth Street, its colorful murals and the smell of vinegar mixed with grilled beef lure diners in to sample the incredible burgers. This restaurant uses only premium meat—bison, turkey, ostrich and beef—in order to make a superior burger. Every burger is grilled, then garnished with fresh lettuce, onion and tomato and served on a thick bun. This down-home restaurant mainly does take-out, but there are a half-dozen tables inside for diners who don't want to eat on the run. A burger costs anywhere from CAD 2-7, depending on the type and quality of burger.

Most Calgarians only "go cowboy" for the two weeks surrounding the annual Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, but western culture is still deeply ingrained in the city and region. This place is decorated with barn wood, barbed wire, western oil paintings and prairie antiques. A moderately priced menu offers buffalo steaks, Buckaroo Beans and fried bull calf testicles, more delicately known as prairie oysters. Burgers come in four varieties: beef, buffalo, chicken and veggie. There's an English pub to the back offering a myriad of brews from around the world.

Restaurants come and go, but the Keg chain has been around for more than a generation as a reliable place for a good steak, devoid of the stuffiness of more traditional steakhouses. Known for a casual atmosphere, table help who insist you know their names and big salad bars, this particular outlet holds true to form. It is set in what looks to passersby like a classic Western ranch house and carries that homey (though bustling) feel inside. Alberta prides itself on its beef, and that's the mainstay of the menu, with filet mignon, New York cuts and prime rib, all at moderate prices. There are two more Keg outlets in Calgary, plus two in Banff.

The restaurant opened 20 years ago, offering a non-trendy dining atmosphere where nearly everyone could feel comfortable. Once the restaurant was well established, Nick's went a step further by offering delivery services and catering. This is one of the few places where you can get a five-star steak dinner complete with garlic toast, salad and baked potato delivered right to your home, minutes after ordering. Trio Pizza and Steak House

Casual dining and great prices
4515 Macleod Trail Southwest
Calgary, AB T2G 0A5
Canada

The Trio is a casual dining facility that offers pizza, pasta and ribs. It also has an adjoining pub where you can shoot a game of darts, or choose from their large selection of ales. They offer delicious homemade pizzas with a variety of toppings as well as soup, salads, and ribs. Their baked spaghetti is particularly delicious and one of their more popular dishes. They are licensed for beer and wine.

Whiskey Creek Saloon and Steakhouse

The good, the bad, and the thirsty
200 Barclay Parade Southwest
Eau Claire Market
Calgary, AB T2P 4R5
Canada
+1 403 262 9378
There is no shortage of Western-themed restaurants in Calgary, but most seem to be either too phony-cowboy (one regularly features rap musicians) or too hick. This Eau Claire saloon manages to find a pleasant middle ground by adopting a "movie-set western" style. In fact the beautiful wooden bar was a set piece from the movie Legends of the Fall. Their beer is fresh and cold and served in wonderfully curvy ergonomic glasses. The menu consists of the sort of steaks, ribs, chicken and burgers Clint Eastwood would probably enjoy.
