Charming used bookshop |
912 - 16 Avenue Northwest Calgary, AB T2M 0K3 Canada +1 403 282 1330 http://anniesbookcompany.ca/ |
Too many used book shops have all the charm of a garage sale. Annie's is different. Dispersed among the well-stocked shelves are comfortable chairs, sofas and tables, and the cafe in the corner offers delicious coffees and teas to sip while you browse. With over 50,000 titles in stock covering every conceivable genre, there is plenty to look at. Annie also offers a book 'rental' service, and a literary salon, which is a separate room housing rare and antiquated books. A regular schedule of poetry readings and lectures are also available. Favourite used bookstore |
223 10 Street Northwest Calgary, AB T2N 1V5 Canada +1 403 283 9521 |
In a neighbourhood with no shortage of used bookstores, this popular shop is one of the best. In fact, Calgarians regularly vote Author! Author! Calgary's favourite used book seller. The selection of titles in all genres is impressive, over 50,000 titles in all, with most shelves stocked to the ceiling. There is a wide magazine section, including the ubiquitous yellow wall of National Geographic back issues. In addition to English titles, there is a small selection German and French books, and some secondhand sheet music. A short browse through this shop will surely yield a literary treasure or two. A child friendly experience |
5111 Northland Drive Northwest Calgary, AB T2L 2J8 Canada +1 403 247 4143 |
This is a great, child-friendly store that teaches as it astounds, which is the best way to learn. There are, of course, the ubiquitous Beanie Babies (with quite a large selection by the way) as well as numerous colorful mobiles for hanging on the ceiling, or over a crib. There are also bird feeders, wind chimes and specialty cards. But the real treasures involve their huge selection of excellent educational games. Too numerous to mention, most are child-friendly and geared to bringing out the best in children, using different stimuli. There are also many interesting books geared to toddlers and under fives. For those with teenagers there are also interesting puzzles, toys and CD's. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For a different sort of gift |
142 10th Street Northwest Calgary, AB T2N 1V3 Canada +1 403 270 7272 |
If you're looking for a book on raising your puppy holistically or seeking a crystal to draw bad energy away from your body, this is the place you should visit. Cluttered with books on Native American Folklore, Ancient Eastern medical practices, and new-age living, this store lies outside the mainstream. The staff are friendly and know exactly where everything is—even the most obscure topics and titles. With its unusual and sometimes fascinating collection of books and wide assortment of crystal jewelry, there is enough here to keep even the most skeptical visitor interested for hours. Award-winning bookseller |
1135 Kensington Road North West Calgary, AB T2N 3P4 Canada +1 403 283 6655 http://www.pages.ab.ca/ |
It is not surprising that a store part-owned by award-winning author Peter Oliva is an award-winning bookstore--Pages was a Canadian Booksellers Association Bookseller of the Year. This small, two-level store boasts a wide collection of fiction on the first floor and nonfiction on the second. Regularly scheduled author readings add a nice dimension to the experience. Shoppers determined to help wage a small-shop war against the encroaching book superstores pack the aisles. Once you find your latest treasured tome, wander out into the surrounding Kensington neighborhood and one of its coffee-driven retreats. Review © 2007, Wcities |
