Authentic military surplus store |
1005 11th St SE Inglewood Calgary, AB T2G 3E9 Canada +1 403 265 1754 |
This shop has been serving Calgarians for close to 50 years and is now a city landmark. Even the rich and powerful drop by: the last time singer/actor/diva Cher was in town she picked up a couple of military flight jackets. This is one of the most authentic military surplus stores in North America with a staff conversant in military memorabilia. Crown offers everything from waterproof matches to footwear and binoculars, and most items are very reasonably priced. Even if you don't buy anything, it makes for great browsing. Just like a day at the beach |
202, 200 Barclay Parade Southwest Eau Claire Market Calgary, AB T2P 0M8 Canada +1 403 237 8326 |
Echo House is reminiscent of all those beach party movies made in the 60s. The walls are adorned with surfboards and snowboards and most of the clothing items are centered around, you guessed it, a day at the beach. It offers a whole range of clothing and accessories including shorts, bikinis, pants and shirts. The trendy sunglasses start around CAD16 and the jewelry is chic and reasonably priced. Echo House is geared to the younger crowd, but check it out; everyone deserves a beach-break. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Upscale clothing for men & women |
100 Toronto Dominion Square Calgary, AB T2P 2Y9 Canada +1 403 261 8706 http://www.eddiebauer.com/eb/c... |
It's an American chain whose original motto was to sell camping gear, tents and outdoor accessories. Today it sells strictly higher-end clothing for both men and women, and this particular location is the largest of its kind in Canada. Located in the heart of downtown, they've recently renovated and knocked out a couple of walls, making it a large store with lots of interesting selections. Eddie Bauer offers name brand boots and shoes for climbing, as well as beautiful fleece-lined vests. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Quality hemp clothing |
926A - 17th Avenue South-West Calgary, AB T2T 0A2 Canada +1 403 245 3155 http://www.hemporium.ca/ |
Now that hemp has gained a certain amount of respectability, there are many of these like-minded stores opening up. Hemporium was here before hemp was cool. Located on 17th Avenue Southwest, it offers a huge array of products made from hemp including bubble bath, incense and clothing. Although a little on the pricey side, the clothes last much longer than their 'non-hemp' versions because of the stronger fibers. There are also a number of interesting books, jewelry and artwork as well as information on the widespread use of this plant. There are hand blown pipes and tobacco smoking paraphernalia located at the back of the store, and the staff is both friendly and knowledgeable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Golf, golf and more golf |
1140, 33 Heritage Meadows Way Southeast Calgary, AB T2J 0P6 Canada +1 403 255 5726 http://www.nevadabobgolf.ca/ |
Someone once said that playing a round of golf is "a good walk...ruined" but don't you believe it. Along with the usual selection of accessories like gloves, bags and balls, Bob boasts a large selection of golf clubs for kids! There are dozens of selections of clubs for adults including a lady's section offering smaller handles with shorter clubs. There are a number of outfits to choose from including sweaters, shorts, and rain gear. Given the rapidly changing weather in Calgary, they also offer umbrellas and hooded all-weather coats that attach to your golf bag. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Historical and vintage clothing |
1227 9th Avenue Southeast Calgary, AB T2G 0T1 Canada +1 403 262 0041 |
This eclectic collection of classic and vintage clothing is more like a museum, spanning the decades of fashion from the early 1800s right up to the 1980s. Tucked in amongst beige melamine-paneled TVs from 1950 and leopard-print leotards from 1984 is an impressive assortment of business suits, footwear, and accessories like handbags and fur boas. Most of it is either painfully out of style, or just coming back in for a second time. It would be difficult to find a more comprehensive source of fringe fashion and historical clothing in the city. A Calgary shopping institution. |
318 11th Avenue Southeast Calgary, AB T2G 0Y2 Canada +1 403 262 6994 / +1 800 909 6994 http://www.ribtor.com/ |
Remember that funny little corner store when you were growing up as a kid? The one that had everything? Well, Ribtor is its big brother. It's been part of the Calgary shopping landscape for close to fifty years and offers thousands of items at very reasonable prices. This is especially important if you have children and are looking to stay on a budget. The Army Surplus section is worth a visit just to check out some of the archaic and somewhat frightening military ware. Ribtor stocks everything from Coleman stoves to fishing poles; garden hoses to basketballs. In fact, if they don't have it, they promise to find it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

317 7th Avenue Southwest Suite 212, Toronto Dominion Square Calgary, AB T2P 2Y9 Canada +1 403 264 2580 http://canada.roots.com/ |
Roots began in 1973 selling the shoe that everyone wore for years in high school. The original Roots were a mix between a desert boot and running shoe, and everyone from thirteen years old and onward had a pair. There are 5 locations in Calgary, and each location plans to begin selling jeans, cotton shirts and more accessible apparel. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hip women's boutique |
801 17 Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2T 0A1 Canada +1 403 229 0200 |
This sunny boutique on hip 17th Ave offers a stylish selection of women's fashions. The second floor, reached by a precariously steep flight of stairs (use the handrail!), is reserved for consignment articles while racks of new clothing fill the main level. The store also sells a variety of locally produced artisan soaps, bath oils and incense, as well as note cards, ceramics and jewellery. The son of the owner is an award-winning music video director and many of his trophies are on display. Unfortunately, they are not for sale. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A warehouse filled with shoes |
8228 Macleod Trail Southeast Unit 144 Calgary, AB T2H 2B8 Canada +1 403 258 1717 http://www.shoewarehouse.ca |
The warehouse concept of selling shoes seems to be quickly catching on in Calgary. Warehouse means warehouse, however, and gone are the days when a salesperson would sit with you for twenty minutes while you tried on shoes. There are some great prices here, particularly for ladies shoes and they offer a full range of sizes - from the very petite to the very large. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sophisticated outdoor footwear |
1113 Kensington Road Northwest Calgary, AB T2N 3P2 Canada +1 403 283 6174 |
This foot-pampering store is well stocked in both casual and formal shoes, including sandals, hiking boots and runners. The staff are more concerned with ensuring that customers have the right shoes than with making a sale, and will spend as much time as is needed to do that. For travelers going hiking in Banff or Jasper, this is an excellent place to get outfitted with proper footwear. Specializing in Rockport rugged walking shoes, Ecco dress-boots, and Birkenstock sandals, the prices are high, but long-lasting quality is certain. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For the business executive |
174 Toronto Dominion Square Calgary, AB T2P 2Z1 Canada +1 403 233 8086 |
If you've ever heard the complaint that men don't have the variety that women do when it comes to clothes, then they haven't visited Urban Men. Located on the bottom floor of TD Square, it offers all kinds of choices for the "up and coming" business executive, including some cool after-hours clothes. There are a number of fine suits available from designers such as DKNY and Thomas Cole, and although they don't come cheap, they are extremely well made and of course, very fashionable. If you're looking for more casual attire, Urban Men offers khaki pants, cotton shirts and name-brand jeans. It's a nice change from the more austere shops for men, and the selection alone is worth checking it out. Review © 2007, Wcities |
