Curing the February blahs |
Calgary, AB T2P 0S4 Canada +1 403 543 5480 http://www.calgarywinterfest.com/ |
Originally conceived in February 1989 as relief to the year-long hangover Calgarians were suffering after hosting the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, this 11-day festival has grown into one of Calgary's favourite events. This celebration of everything snowy, frosty and cold, includes ice sculpture contests, human curling championships, music, clowns, winter crafts, snowboarding demonstrations and more. Most events are free and take place in various venues throughout the city. And in spite of the theme of the festival, many are held indoors or in heated tents. It is February, after all. The festival begins with a raucous parade and includes five days devoted to the gods of steel drums, rum and reggae. The downtown lunch hour parties tempt office dwellers to exchange their power ties for Rasta caps. The main event is the Sunshine Festival held at Prince's Island Park, which draws huge crowds hoping that the music, spicy food and Caribbean arts and crafts will make them forget about Calgary's legendary cold temperatures. Most of the events are free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wild Annual Street Festival |
4 Street South West (12 Avenue to Elbow Drive) Calgary, AB T2S 1W9 Canada +1 403 229 0902 http://www.4streetcalgary.com/ |
On the last Sunday of May it seems like everyone in Calgary is on Fourth Street for the city's largest street festival. The mayhem begins at noon with a parade, and the street is jammed with street performers, local musicians, face-painted children, dog-walkers and drumming hippies until the festival ends at 5p. Local artisans ply their wares on street-side tables and the neighbourhood's many restaurants offer food samples to the hungry crowds. Bring the kids, some coins for the buskers, and an umbrella, as it invariably rains every year. This is a free event. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Each summer the noise of the football-tossers and off-leash poodles in Prince's Island Park is tempered by the dignified sounds of Elizabethan verse, as drama students perform informal and creative takes on the works of Sir William. This is by no means stuffy theatre, and the troupe's interpretations of the plays are always entertaining. (One summer, Macbeth was a Japanese Samurai). Two of Shakespeare's plays are presented each year, each performed on alternating evenings (except Mondays). Performances are free, but cast members solicit CAD10 donations after each show.
